ABOUT THIS BOOK...
Hans Christian Andersen (like the other compilers of Fairytales) did not author these tales, but COLLECTED and edited their presentation. And that is precisely what this anthology is, a collection of the tales that he managed to gather. It carries 100 of his most touching and famous tales including "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "There is a Difference", "The Little Match Girl", and "Grandmother" just to name a few. What we often forget about Fairytales is that they weren't just for entertainment, but they also had many lessons about empathy, courage, and living life to the fullest. This is a wonderful collection that displays that.
One thing should be stated, though...many modern adaptations tend to sugarcoat parts (such as no dying, etc.) for the kids...but the original tales are actually quite honest about the more brutal side of life. People die, rarely is there an easy road, people can be selfish at the expense of another's life, there are many things that one can be afraid of. But that's part of the beauty of these original tales...they say that challenges should be faced head-on and with courage because it is right. In the words of G.K. Chesterton, "Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed." And this edition stays faithful to that fact in each of its tales.
ABOUT THIS EDITION:
This is a Fall River hardcover edition with a jacket cover carrying the tile. It has 686 pages (if you include the illustration at the end) and the paper is typical modern book paper, similar to what you get with paperback editions of New York Time's Bestsellers. It also features some of the classic illustrations in some of the stories. As stated before, it contains 100 H.C. Andersen fairy tales. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any special features like an "introduction" or "mini-biography" of Andersen. Still, it is a solid edition that is put together quite well...and at an affordable price that is rare for this kind of edition. And, frankly, I really love the cover art for this, too haha. I feel it captures the spirit and a certain dignity/elegance of the fairy tale without being overly cartoonish.
