Présentation de l'éditeur

Hans Christian Andersen is one of the world's most popular storytellers and his fairy tales are among the best-loved works of literature. Readers the world over know his poignant tale of The Little Mermaid, who sacrifices everything for love, and The Steadfast Tin Soldier, whose affection for a paper ballerina is symbolised by his transformation into a small tin heart. Several of Andersen's stories are so well-known, among them The Emperor's New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling, that their titles alone have become meaningful figures of speech. Hans Christian Andersen: Best-Loved Fairy Tales collects one hundred of Andersen's incomparable fairy tales and stories, among them Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, The Princess and the Pea, The Red Shoes, The Wild Swans and his fantasy masterpiece The Snow-Queen. This volume is beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred drawings by Dugald Stewart Walker and Hans Tegner, two of Andersen's best-known illustrators.

HASH(0x92a6dce4) étoiles sur 5 Fairytales Don't Teach Children Dragon's Exist, They Teach Children Dragon's Can Be Beaten. 27 décembre 2014
Par Hope this helps - Publié sur Amazon.com
Fairytales have played an interesting part in my life. I remember them being read to me as a child (especially this "The Real Mother Goose Clock" book that my Mom got me when I was just learning to read time). But as I got older, I somehow "outgrew them"...seeing them as "childish" and whatnot. But then I became a musician and was gradually drawn back to "Fairyland" (as G.K. Chesterton puts it). And now that I read them, again...I can see more clearly how mature and how encouraging they can be...and why they are timeless (and ageless). I have several collections of Fairytales, now, from the Perrault editions to the Grimm ones...but I feel that this Hans Christian Andersen edition is the most beautiful collection of these tales.

Hans Christian Andersen (like the other compilers of Fairytales) did not author these tales, but COLLECTED and edited their presentation. And that is precisely what this anthology is, a collection of the tales that he managed to gather. It carries 100 of his most touching and famous tales including "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "There is a Difference", "The Little Match Girl", and "Grandmother" just to name a few. What we often forget about Fairytales is that they weren't just for entertainment, but they also had many lessons about empathy, courage, and living life to the fullest. This is a wonderful collection that displays that.

One thing should be stated, though...many modern adaptations tend to sugarcoat parts (such as no dying, etc.) for the kids...but the original tales are actually quite honest about the more brutal side of life. People die, rarely is there an easy road, people can be selfish at the expense of another's life, there are many things that one can be afraid of. But that's part of the beauty of these original tales...they say that challenges should be faced head-on and with courage because it is right. In the words of G.K. Chesterton, "Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed." And this edition stays faithful to that fact in each of its tales.

This is a Fall River hardcover edition with a jacket cover carrying the tile. It has 686 pages (if you include the illustration at the end) and the paper is typical modern book paper, similar to what you get with paperback editions of New York Time's Bestsellers. It also features some of the classic illustrations in some of the stories. As stated before, it contains 100 H.C. Andersen fairy tales. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any special features like an "introduction" or "mini-biography" of Andersen. Still, it is a solid edition that is put together quite well...and at an affordable price that is rare for this kind of edition. And, frankly, I really love the cover art for this, too haha. I feel it captures the spirit and a certain dignity/elegance of the fairy tale without being overly cartoonish.
