Présentation de l'éditeur

In Newcastle, Detective Joe Ashworth and his daughter Jessie travel home on the busy Metro. The train is stopped unexpectedly, and Jessie sees that one woman doesn't leave with the other passengers: Margaret Krukowski has been fatally stabbed.

No one saw the murder take place. How can this be, when the train was packed? Searching for a lead, DI Vera Stanhope heads to the quiet Northumberland town of Mardle to investigate. She can feel in her bones that the local residents know more than they are letting on: a killer is among them.

Just days later, a second woman is murdered. Retracing the victims' final steps, Vera finds herself searching deep into the hidden past of this seemingly innocent neighbourhood, led by clues that keep revolving around one street: why are the residents of Harbour Street so reluctant to speak?

DI Vera Stanhope is back. And she wants answers.

I have read all of Anne Cleeves books and like them all. This ending of this one however, felt a bit rushed.
There was a lot; too much even, details of the victim's life. Would have liked to know more of the other characters too.
Thdn, there's hardly more than a line or two about the killer, and voila - there the perpetrator pops out!
No spoiler here, you'd be hard put to know who it is before the very end (I have not used any gender)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The perfect mystery for a cold winter's evening... 19 février 2014
Par Lisa Marie - Publié sur
Ann Cleeves' newest Vera Stanhope entry continues her streak of consistently exceptional crime fiction writing.

Vera's case this time out revolves around the murder of an older yet charismatic and still-beautiful woman residing at a remote boarding house located on the titular Harbour Street in a desultory coastal town. The town, its residents, the few visitors to it, and the victim herself, all hold pieces as to how and why such an elegant, compassionate woman is brutally killed. Just the kind of twisty, chewy puzzle Vera loves to sink her teeth into - and just the kind of addictive storytelling readers will love to sink their teeth into.

Equally fascinating is Vera herself - she is a larger-than-life force to be reckoned with. The tenacity and single-mindedness she brings to each murder enquiry confounds suspects and her own team alike. It's Vera's world and we just live in it...and I wouldnt have it any other way.

One is in safe hands with this author. The writing is clear and she knows where she is going with the story at all times. No cheap tricks to create tension and the characters as always are well developed and fully realised. With some authors I feel as if I am seeing through dense fog...the characters just do not take shape on the page. Not so here.....ann cleeves just gets better at what she does. Loved this book....over far too soon.

You can trust Ann Cleeves to always give you what you want in her Vera books, they will never disappoint. These books have everything that a thriller got to have in my view, psychological backgrounds, the atmosphere of the Northern English region, the bad people and the good people who triumph of course, the humor and the special characters. May she long continue writing them!

The plot is tight and the ending is unexpected with a few good twists in the middle. I like the series, well worth the reading.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Superb story, incredible writing 1 mai 2014
Par Ellen Wertheimer - Publié sur
Harbour Street is, in a word, superb. The plot is excellent and suspenseful. The writing is beyond fabulous. The characters are vivid, their conduct all too probable, their conversations plausible, and the narrative stellar. I was riveted through the entire book, unable to tear myself away. Remarkably, while this is the fifth in the series, it may well be the best. It is a staggering achievement for an author to write a series and have each one better than the one before, but Ms Cleeves may have carried it off. The strength of her characters lasts from book to book, inspiring the reader with the goal of getting to know them better as Ms Clleves uncovers their many layers.

Ann Cleeves' books, including Harbour Street, are not for readers who like cozies; there is nothing cozy about them. They are realistic and tough, even brutal. The characters do drink a lot of tea, but they drink a lot of alcohol too. The people in these books are not wealthy, and often find themselves at various moral and criminal crossroads as they struggle to scratch out their livings. In other words, these are not drawing room comedies, but are saved from complete bleakness by the incredible detectives that inhabit their pages: Vera, Joe, Holly and Charlie, who hold the investigations and the series together. Most of all Vera--fat, short-tempered, impatient, and brilliant.

I discovered the Vera books more or less by accident, as only one of them (the fourth, Silent Voices) has been published in the US as of yet. I happened upon the British TV series, and I was hooked. I then chanced on the newly published Silent Voices, and devoured it, although it was so vivid that I had to take breaks occasionally. I then knew that I had to get the rest of the Vera series, and did (thanks to Amazon's UK site). I read them one after the other, which is incredibly rare for me. Usually, if I do this, I get tired of the author and his/her characters. Not this author, or this detective.

Vera is an absolutely fascinating woman. I would like to get to know her, although I don't think she would be too interested in me. The books allow the reader to learn about her through her thoughts and actions. I feel like I have a long way to go before I can claim to know her. If there were a sixth in the series available right now, I would have started it by this time instead of writing this review. . . .

If you enjoy fascinating characters, incredible plots, and wonderful writing, this book and this series are for you. I hope that the publisher brings all the books out in the US, and that Ms Cleeves writes more Vera books soon!
