Présentation de l'éditeur

In this all-new novel from the author of After Hours and Unbound, a woman with a rocky past finds romance in the last place she’d ever expect...

Annie Goodhouse doesn’t need to be warned about bad boys; good sense and an abusive ex have given her plenty of reasons to play it safe. But when she steps into her new role as outreach librarian for Cousins Correctional Facility, no amount of good sense can keep her mind—or eyes—off inmate Eric Collier.

Eric doesn’t claim to be innocent of the crime that landed him in prison. In fact, he’d do it again if that’s what it took to keep his family safe. Loyalty and force are what he knows. But meeting Annie makes him want to know more.

When Eric begins courting Annie through letters, they embark on a reckless, secret romance—a forbidden fantasy that neither imagines could ever be real…until early parole for Eric changes everything, and forces them both to face a past they can’t forget, and a desire they can’t deny.

Praise for Cara McKenna and her novels

“Cara McKenna is my go-to author for gritty, hot love stories full of honest emotion.”—Victoria Dahl, USA Today bestselling author

“McKenna writes dark, lush, erotic romance.”—Heroes and Heartbreakers

“Sweet, smoking hot, standout erotic romance.”—Beth Kery, New York Times bestselling author

Before becoming a purveyor of smart erotic romance, Cara McKenna worked as a lousy barista, a decent designer, and an over-enthusiastic penguin handler. She loves writing sexy, character-driven stories about strong-willed men and women who keep each other on their toes…and bring one another to their knees.

Cara now writes full-time and lives north of Boston with her bearded husband. When she’s not trapped in her own head, she can usually be found in the kitchen, the coffee shop, or jogging around the nearest duck-filled pond.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Love letters..... 15 avril 2014
Par Pat Fordyce - Publié sur
Format:Format Kindle
This is a dark, sometimes frightening love story, that started in the most unlikeliest of places, a place most people would consider hell. Eric Collier, inmate 802267 has been there for five years. He does not deny his crime, he owns it. He wants to do his time and move on, somehow.

Annie Goodhouse was an undergrad five years ago, when the man she loved terrified and beat her. She is no longer that woman. Annie is now a librarian working for the county Outreach Program. One of her duties is staffing the prison library. There she meets Eric, quiet, unobtrusive but somehow getting under her skin. He begins giving her letters to read at home. Beautiful, insightful and very sexy letters. Those letters could be a story all their own. Each letter ends with him assuring her he would never hurt her, and if she wished to continue, wear a certain color of clothing the next Friday they meet. If Annie didn't wear that color, he had his answer, and would never bother her again. In the letters he talks about the places he would like to take her, be with her and smelling fresh air and feeling the sun. All just beautiful dreams in their hearts, until one Friday he tells her he's been unexpectedly paroled. He's being released, where could they go from here?

I loved this story. Annie trying to understand Eric's crime, his unwavering statement he would do it again if the circumstances were the same, frightens her especially after her own experience with abuse. Eric freely admits he loves her, but gives her time and space to come to her own decision. The relationship that started with beautiful love letters, is now about two people who barely know each other. The characters are wonderful, the dismal descriptions of a cold snowy winter, and a town dying of neglect, add another depth to the story.

This is the second novel by Ms. McKenna I have read and though completely different stories, strong details and excellent writing kept my attention in both novels. I would love an epilogue, the novel ends very satisfactorily, but I want to know more! I will be honest, I went to bed after starting this novel, and I was up at the crack of dawn to finish. I couldn't get it out of my head.

I received this novel from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review.

A romance novel where the hero and heroine meet in prison? That got my attention! Cara McKenna’s beautiful, at times almost poetic, writing kept me turning the pages!

Annie and Eric couldn’t be more different. Annie is a transplanted southerner living in desolate, economically depressed small-town Michigan. She grew up in a solid middle class family, is well educated…basically, your typical girl next door. Eric grew up in a trailer park, dropped out of high school at 16, and is an incarcerated felon in the prison where Annie works one day a week as part of the library’s community outreach program. On her first day working at the prison, Annie is shocked to find herself attracted to one of the inmates. The two begin a very intense, illicit relationship by writing letters to each other. Beautiful, sexy, sweet, dirty, romantic letters. For Eric, Annie and the letters represent freedom, and the opportunity to express his sweet, caring, romantic side. A side of himself that he obviously can’t show in prison. For Annie, who left South Carolina after her abusive ex-boyfriend broke her jaw, Eric has reawakened sexual feelings that she feared she would never again experience. Their relationship is secret, illicit and yet, safe. Until Eric is granted early parole and Annie has to make a decision that she isn’t prepared to make.

I was rooting for Eric and Annie right from the start. I wasn’t sure, though, that their relationship could work outside of their letters. Annie’s fears and doubts about her own judgment were valid and realistic. All of her doubts and fears about a relationship with a convicted felon were realistic and completely believable. After all, he was guilty of the crime, without remorse or regret, and would do the same thing again, under the same circumstances. There were facets to Eric that Annie couldn’t understand, that were so foreign to her. I really enjoyed watching their relationship, the ups and the downs. This is an emotional, intense book, but it has lighter moments…and some really hot sex!

Hard Time is told in first person, from Annie’s POV. I know some readers don’t like first person, but I’m not one of them. I think it’s perfect for this book. It really allows us to get inside Annie’s head, to know what she’s thinking and feeling. Ms. McKenna’s descriptive writing style is so good that I could easily visualize Annie’s first time walking through the prison block. The sights and sounds, her fear and nerves were so vivid and clear. The emotions, actions and reactions of all the characters were honest and real. I kept wondering the whole time whether Annie and Eric were going to find a way to make it work.

I loved Hard Time and I can’t wait to read more from this author!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautiful erotic love story! 17 avril 2014

I am such huge fan of Cara's writing and her latest, Hard Time, did not disappoint me. I'm always so drawn into the raw honesty and vulnerability of her hot alpha male characters. Eric Collier is incarcerated for a crime he makes no apologies for committing. Annie works one day a week at Cousins Correctional Facility helping inmates in the resource center. When Eric sees Annie, he sets out a course to express his feelings for her through a series of very erotic love letters. Annie is immediately attracted to Eric, and responds to him through her own series of erotic letters. This is a beautiful love story with incredible steamy love scenes. Their story and relationship was so unlikely to actually make it, it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I could not put this down until I finished it. Great read!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 so different, so great 15 avril 2014

This book was so different from what I thought it would be and I have to say it was refreshing. This book was filled with so many sweat and tender moments, what starts out as a forbidden attraction turns into a deep love built on learning about one another the way many authors skim over. I will say I was a little skeptical at first when I read the letters exchanged from the hero and heroine what can I say I'm a skeptic at times especially when the situation was so difficult from the start but the author did a great job making me believe that Eric and Annie loved each other and that Eric wasn't just a creeper in prison who writes flowers and unicorns to woman while in prison(hey I said I was a sceptic lol).

Annie needed a change after a bad relationship she moved north and got a job as a librarian. Part of her job was working at the local prison helping the inmates learn to read, help them with jobs and education, and reading to them. Scared Annie tries to put on a brave front but when she see's Eric she feels an attraction to him that she hasn't felt since her ex boyfriend took his hands to her for the last time. When Eric asks her for help writing a love letter Annie can't help but feel jealousy she never imagined. When Eric gives her another letter to read she can't believe that he is attracted to her and the threat of her job doesn't scare her when Eric is concerned.

Soon Eric and Annie are exchanging letters and starting to fall in love, but when Eric gets early parole Annie isn't sure if she can have a real relationship. When they come face to face outside of prison neither can deny that they're feeling are real. As they begin a relationship the past that put Eric in prison once again threatens Eric's freedom and the love that they both thought was impossible. Now Eric and Annie will have to fight for Eric's freedom so they can finally have what they imagined all those months Eric was in prison.

I really liked this book. Cara McKenna did an excellent job written a difficult situation and making it believable. Eric wasn't my typical hero he had to learn to live all over again after spending so many years locked in prison but the love he felt for Annie was all consuming and beautiful to read. Annie struggled with her decision to break the prison rules and also to trust that Eric would be the man she believed him to be while reading his letters. This was a great book about two people falling in love under circumstances that should have made it impossible. There is also many great erotic scenes both in letters and when Eric was released. It was so nice reading such a unique story, I can't wait to read more from Ms. McKenna she did an amazing job and I really hope I am able to find more books like this in the future.

Cara McKenna's books have a different feel to them. She is willing to explore smexy love, not in penthouse towers with champagne and strawberries, but rather shabby middle America with boarded up storefronts and trailer park gloom. And she shares these settings with no underpinning judgements. The writing, when you scrape away all the erotic interludes is really beautiful. I fell in love with Eric, the gentle, unapologetic felon. I wasn't ready for the story to end.
