Présentation de l'éditeur

At 8,000 words, this collection of humorous essays explores such quirky topics as: disastrous home repairs, ("A Trip to the Hardware Store"), an unfortunate dinner party (“Dinner is Served"), the truth about lazy people ("Lazy Bones"), the weird life of a debt collector ("Your Account is Past Due") and obsessions with gadgets ("Gadget Girl"). Other essays examine how surreal the aging process is (“Where Did the Time Go?"), why you shouldn't judge a person by their job (“Beyond Belief”), and how to complicate simple transactions (“High Finance”). Like the author's first work, "I'm Not Talking About You, Of Course…," these essays will give your spirit a lift and leave you smiling.

I don't know if these essays are based on real life, but it doesn't really matter as they are all well told stories about life. Some of the tales are laugh out loud funny and others are poignant. It is impossible to pick a favorite. Barbara Venkataraman could easily be the next Erma Bombeck or Teresa Bloomingdale if she wanted to write a column instead of these short books of essays.
This was such a great reading experience that I am hoping that she writes a third book of these type of essays.

Everyone has them. Those weird tales, slightly embarrassing, a real pain when it is happening, but leaving a lasting impression. You know the ones. The ones you pull out at parties, or over the meal when the new girl/boy friend comes to dinner and you want to embarrass the sister/brother. That sort of things.

This little group of essays tells some of these little stories, and they are well worth the listen for a good chuckle and a story of your own for a party. “Wait till you hear this! I listened to this group of essays the other day . . .”

I especially like the title essay, as I am a hardware store nut myself, and with Carrie Lee Martz’s narration it had me in stitches. Of course, all of the essays are funny and well worth the listen. Come on, it’s less than an hour long, pick it up and listen already! It’s only $2,76 at Audible, and if you are anything like me, it will make your day.

I received the audio from the author, but this in no way impacts my review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A slice of American Life that we all share in some part 21 décembre 2014

The stories are fun, too true that that they have to have come from someone's real life, and reads like a page out of every person's experiences with parents and friends.

This was a well read audio book and that is key to selling the story which can stand alone in a book but when someone is reading it they need to convey the characters being shared. That is completely done to perfection.

The story about a father that can't do any handiwork was very reminiscent of my childhood and the numerous near loss of fingers events I went thru with my father. My friends I never bring together because each of them shares some different part of my life so braving around that was impressive.

With each story the reader is more drawn in and falls more deeply into a memory of their own that is so similar to the one just read.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A GREAT SHORT STORY! 8 août 2013

A TRIP TO THE HARDWARE STORE is a great short story. We are first introduced to the authors father. He is a man on a mission to get odd jobs around the house done. What he is actually doing is making more jobs for the actual handy men in town. We are then shown the friends of the author, the allergic, vegeterian, picky friends. I love her trying to please everyone. O, for the days you could give a kid a peanut butter sandwich without killing someone. I love the relationships she had with her father and sisters. It reminds me of my own family. Everyone gets paid back eventually. A story you can read in one sitting. This story will make you smile. I would definately recommend.

This is a great autobiographical collection of anecdotal stories about life's little mishaps! I love that it's in a collection called "Quirky Essays for Quirky People" - the stories are definitely fun and quirky. It appears that the author is quirky and fun as well, and her personality seems to shine right through each tale. The book is very relatable and quite humorous. The perfect little book for when you just need a laugh! Better yet, if you're going through some of your own trials and tribulations - you definitely need to read this book! It may just remind you that you're not alone and help to pull you out of the funk that life's troubles can often bring.
