Présentation de l'éditeur

Jade loves her new apartment—until a ghost joins her in the shower.

When empath Jade Calhoun moves into an apartment above a strip bar on Bourbon Street, she expects life to get interesting. What she doesn’t count on is making friends with an exotic dancer, attracting a powerful spirit, and developing feelings for Kane, her sexy landlord.

Being an empath has never been easy on Jade’s relationships. It’s no wonder she keeps her gift a secret. But when the ghost moves from spooking Jade to terrorizing Pyper, the dancer, it’s up to Jade to use her unique ability to save her. Except she’ll need Kane’s help—and he’s betrayed her with a secret of his own—to do it. Can she find a way to trust him and herself before Pyper is lost?

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Steamy paranormal romance 12 novembre 2011

It took me a while to get through this book, due to a couple of technical malfunctions.

I did find the book uneven, and a little slow moving in parts. The main character, Jade, veered between being likeable and sympathetic to occasionally irritating for me, which made her more real, although there were times I found myself rolling my eyes at her - for a smart girl she jumps to some very obviously incorrect conclusions.

Some very steamy sex scenes and fun secondary characters, with a nasty ex and a very unpleasant bad guy made for a faster pace in the second part of the book, which is where the story really started to hook me.

The romantic lead is great; an almost-bad boy who is really appealing - I wouldn't mind a story focusing a bit more on him and his own special ability.

The strongest part of this book for me is the focus on friendship and how true friends look out for each other; I personally loved seeing how Jade and her friends put themselves on the line repeatedly for the people they care about.

The weakest part is that the start feels a bit uneven in pacing and making you care about the characters, but does start hitting home just before the half-way mark.

Recommended to : anyone who likes a bit of steam with their paranormal romance.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Such a good book! 2 octobre 2011

I give Haunted on Bourbon Street a five star review. It is a paranormal romance with a mystery involving a ghost. I won't give to many details away but, for what it is, it is really good! When I read the description of this book I expected a fun, sexy, possibly cheesy, way to use a few hours; however, I got way more than I expected. The author is a great writer and does not use words like "sizzle" and "moist" keeping the cheesiness level fairly low and the mystery part of the story was really good. Many times when I have read romance mystery novels the mystery part of the story takes a back seat to the romance aspects of the story. In contrast, this book has a very nice balance of both.

Another aspect I really enjoyed about this book was the characters. They were all nicely developed, had distinct personalities, and the commentary between them was often very funny. I would love to see the author take some of the supporting characters of this book (Pyper, Kat, etc.) and give them their own stories.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and given the chance would read another book by this author!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Pleasant enough read -- but nothing really stands out 10 mai 2012

I'd say this book is 3 to 3.5 stars (which, according to Amazon is that it is 'Okay'). This is a paranormal romance book. I believe it is an independently published book. I was happy to see that there were no significant grammar, typo or formatting issues with the book. The book centers on Jade Calhoun who moves to New Orleans and her new apartment has a ghost. The plot concerns how Jade and her new friends try to solve the mystery of the ghost, which becomes more important as the ghostly occurences become more serious.

I did like a few of the characters - especially some of the side characters (Bea, Charlie). I did not mind that the paranormal aspects of the book centered on pyschic abilities and witches -- no vampires or werewolves! There were intriguing hints of Jade's background (with her mom and witches) that added mystery without becoming annoying. The romance with Kane seemed somewhat believeable (there was an attraction, they acted on it in a believeable fashion). I did like that it didn't end on a cliffhanger -- the book neatly wraps up the mystery (although it got a little too confusing and weird at the end with ghosts, a goddess, possession, etc).

However, the characters felt a little flat for me. I've been trying to figure out why but can't put my finger on it. Part may be due to how accepting of ghosts, dreamwalking, etc., that every single character is. No questioning if that is what is going on or anything -- they just accept it as normal and move on. Several characters just behaved very strangely (her ex-boyfriend) that seemed really out of left-field. Also, the mystery of the ghost who is different with two different people was so obvious that I wasn't sure why they didn't get it (won't give spoilers here). The romance was "hot" enough; but there was no tension or conflict in the relationship (other than Jade worrying for a bit whether he'd accept her abilities). Finally, the book didn't have anything that really stood out about it -- it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Hence the "Okay" rating. Jade has more abilities than thought and is quite different and powerful (very typical for this genre). The book was fine to pass the time but I won't re-read it or remember much about it in a week.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Just did not work for me 11 mai 2012

I tried liking this book. I really tried. I thought the idea of a ghost lover was enough of a draw that I got through 60% of the book so far. But when you're reading for what seems like an hour and in reality only 5 minutes have passed, it doesn't bode well. Here's what I got from it so far:

The main character, Jade, also the narrator, is a Bella Swan if she actually ever grew up. Her only characteristic is that she's clumsy. Everyone loves her, everyone wants to do stuff for her, even the darn ghost that haunts her, and I honestly can't see the allure. She's just bland to me.

Being that this is first person, I expected some limitations on the other characters, but I hoped the fact that Jade is an empath would make up for it. Not so. This book is filled with simple, seemingly emotionally limited characters. There is no nuance of feeling, just "anger", "jealousy", "desire", etc. I didn't feel a connection with any of them. There are relationships in this story that I understand are meant to be complicated but I just didn't get that. It all seemed very shallow. And somehow it's all about Jade. More than half way through the book I have yet to read her do something for someone else that's not in repayment for something they'd already done for her.

The plot is slow and uneventful. Jade falls. Jade twists her ankle. Jade hits her head. Again. Oh, and there is a ghost in there somewhere. Honestly, the only character I wanted to read about was the mysterious evil guy in the club that gets mentioned twice. Whether or not he ever got into play later in the book I do not know. And there is Dan, who for some reason hates Jade. That back story was so poorly placed in the whole story it completely disoriented me and I skimmed through it to get to what was happening in the present - you know, the important stuff of an actual conflict that happened, which got so rudely interrupted by something that doesn't even matter anymore.

I plan on finishing this book only because I want to know if it ever gets better. But I'm not holding out much hope. If you're looking for a good paranormal romance set in New Orleans, check out Kresley Cole. I just can't recommend this one.

Disjointed plot, two-dimensional characters, annoying main character, awkward dialog ... I can't say anything good about this book except that it was free. The author also changes the narration point of view randomly, some times within the same paragraph. It is distracting, confusing and I'm actually surprised given that point of view is a pretty basic concept for writing. Avoid this book!
