This book is definitely worth checking out if you're headed to a city that features the kind of beautiful architecture that begs to be photographed. --Amateur Photographer October 2011

Présentation de l'éditeur

In his numerous works, internationally acclaimed photographer Michael Eastman often focuses on the facades and interiors of the world's cities, such as Paris, Rome, and New Orleans. In this book he explores the houses and streets of Havana. Nearly one hundred photographs from the past two decades reveal a world where triumphant past and vanquished present collide. Painterly in quality, these richly coloured photographs are dramatically lit and exquisitely detailed. Though mostly devoid of people, they manage to capture contemporary Cuban life through suggestion: an empty chair, an ancient car, a decrepit hallway, a forgotten chandelier. The result is as eloquent as a love poem written to a city rich in history, culture, and feeling.

Poetic decay 31 janvier 2012
Par Meredith/Susan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
These poetic photographs portray mainly ornate facades and ghostly interiors of baroque, art nouveau, and art deco buildings in Havana, some still struggling to hang on to their original identities and functions, others obviously having given up the struggle and embraced inevitable decay. Few people appear in the photographs; the scenes could be stage sets for some unimaginable surrealistic play. The walls are motley, moldy, patchy shades of blue and green that might be found in some underwater kingdom. A bright red neon lit bar and restaurant with a motorcycle in front strikes a garishly festive note. This is a beautiful and intriguing book.

Relics of Grandeur and Culture 7 février 2012
Par Ronnie J Smith - Publié sur Amazon.com

In "HAVANA", what really knocks a reader over with the fascinating and sometimes seductive photographic eye of Michael Eastman is the intimacy of the beauty; in this case, fading beauty. Show us a grand dining room--and he shows the ghosts of high society that used to imbibe there; show us a street corner--and he shows the imposing opulence of its architecture of the roaring heyday of Havana emptying itself onto the squalid pavement; meander through a mansion, and we come upon the political overtones of a regime contrasted to its stark deference to sacred icons of art and religion.
This is a rich book of images, and one has to admire Mr Eastman on 1) accessing the intimate spaces he so justly and artistically reveals, and 2) his poetical and dignified composition of each subject. The book leaves you with a feeling that what has come and gone, and recedes in front of our eyes, has worth. Thank you, Mr Eastman.

This contrast of the old grandeur and recent decay are sensitively treated with light & soul. Each photo tells the history of a family who lived there.

Love this book. Absolutely fabulous photos - very crisp and clear, perfect colors that reflect exactly what Cuba is today. You will love this book - literally filled with artfully photographed scenes of Havana. The cover is a hint.
