Présentation de l'éditeur

One title to change his life...

A disgraced son with a dark reputation, William “Ferguson” Avenel is content to live in exile – until his father dies in the scandal of the Season. With rumors of insanity swirling around them, his sisters desperately need a chaperone. Ferguson thinks he’s found the most proper woman in England – and he won’t ruin her, even if he secretly desires the passionate woman trapped beneath a spinster’s cap.

One chance to break the rules...

Lady Madeleine Vaillant can’t face her blighted future without making one glorious memory for herself. In disguise, on a London stage, she finds all the adoration she never felt from the ton. But when she’s nearly recognized, she will do anything to hide her identity – even setting up her actress persona as Ferguson’s mistress. She’ll take the pleasure he offers, but Madeleine won’t lose her heart in the bargain.

One season to fall in love...

Every stolen kiss could lead to discovery, and Ferguson’s old enemies are determined to ruin them both. But as their dangerous passion ignites their hearts and threatens their futures, how can an heiress who dreams of freedom deny the duke who demands her love?

Not bad, but nothing to distinguish it from other historical romances. The story line is highly improbable for the time is set in, but we are talking about fiction – and in that sense I liked the idea of a woman breaking the conventions of the society. Light reading for a lazy afternoon.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 WILL LOVE WIN OUT OVER DUTY? 22 avril 2012
Par Laurel-Rain Snow - Publié sur
In Book I of the Muses of Mayfair series, the author features Lady Madeleine Vaillant, a young woman bound by the constraints of the society in which she lives. Heiress Without A Cause: Muses of Mayfair #1 opens in the spring of 1812 to a ball Madeleine is not the least bit interested in attending.

As she goes through the motions, she dreams of an alternate life she is living in secret as an actress on the London stage. Something she does in disguise that risks her reputation as a lady.

While dreaming of the thrill of her private rebellion, she is stunned to encounter the disgraced titled "rake," William "Ferguson" Avenel; he has approached her with a special request. His young sisters need a proper lady to chaperone them until their debut and appropriate marriages.

What happens between the two in the next few weeks will change everything about their lives. What does Ferguson discover one night? Will he betray Madeleine or will he protect her? Will the secrets they keep "ruin" them in the "ton"? Can they stifle the attraction growing rapidly between them? And how will an heiress who dreams of freedom give in to a duke whose responsibilities could inhibit her?

Historical romance is not my usual genre, but I found this book enchanting. For a little while, I was lost in the world of the privileged English society at a time when freedom was often denied and when societal expectations curbed the choices of its members. I enjoyed the ways in which the characters struggled to overcome the rules that regulated their lives and I rooted for their happiness. Four stars.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 boring with ridiculous contrivances 28 décembre 2012

I don't understand all the talk about graphic sex in this novel. Obviously those who view the sex as graphic have not read novels where the sex is truly graphic. I do not mind sex in romance, in fact, I prefer a writer who can create a passionate scene without using ridiculous euphemisms. Isn't that part of romance? That is not to say that I prefer novels where there is no plot and too much sex. To each his own, but I do not see an issue with this novel.

I simply do not find this novel that interesting. The characters were likable enough, but it is not a novel that grabbed me, hence, I took almost three weeks to read this and wished that it would end while I was doing so. I feel that the conflict and situations in the novel were overblown and simply not strong enough to create tension. I do not understand Madeline's depth of desire to become a spinster. The reasons given were flimsy and easily counteracted. She often referred to Ferguson as an autocrat, yet there were no true signs of that in him. In addition, Ferguson's desire not to become like his father is an over used plot devise and was very shallowly developed in the novel. The conflicts had no depth; therefore, the novel lacked interest.

In addition, how could the author think that the solution she created at the end of the novel was sensible? How did she not see that she was creating another problem by having Ferguson appear at a ball with his mistress while he claimed such undying love for Madeline in the eyes of the ton? Even more unbelievable was that she went straight from that episode to Madeline and Ferguson's happily ever after.

If Ramsey had ended the novel earlier, she could have avoided the ridiculous suspense that she tried to create at the end of the novel. If she had paid more attention to her writing she would not have had a duke being suspected of being mad even though his brothers, who were mad, had a different mother and there was no sign of madness in his father's family. She also would not have had people of the ton be so overtly impolite to Madeline and she would not have had a duke wanting to flee London because people suspected that he killed his mistress of all people. And surely, she would not have had whisperings of a trial of a duke when there was no body and no evidence whatsoever of murder. Who puts a duke on trial based on a rumor that he murdered his mistress, especially a mistress that no one ever sees but on the stage? And really, how could Caro be that dense? How could Ellie be that weak that she, a grown woman, needs her brother so much that she finds it difficult to forgive him when she refused to leave with him? He was a third son. Why does his sister act like him fleeing was so horrible? He could not have saved the family.

Ramsey was trying too hard and what resulted was a boring novel with ridiculous plot contrivances.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Didn't finish- ridiculous and poorly plotted 23 janvier 2013

It's rare that I leave a book unfinished. I read quickly and usually, even if a book is bad, it's funny enough to finish. But this book was bland and unbelievable and poorly written. The hero's motivations don't make any sense. I would be ok with that if the writing were any good, but it's not. Information that should really come out in dialogue is one sentence of exposition ("They told her how horrible their childhood was" is almost exactly a sentence in the book). Blink and you'll miss it. I kept checking to see how much further along I was in the book, always surprised that it was less than 50%.

I had high hopes for this book (and the series). It was even well-reviewed by a trusted review! But seriously. Skip it.

I actually went back and purchased the first book of the series after coming across the description of Scotsmen Prefer Blondes (Book #2) as I usually like to read book series in order. I am so happy that I did! I loved the story. I would have love to seen what the letters from Ferguson's father contained and explained the depth of their torn relationship. The scene between Madeline and Amelia as they patched up their relationship was very moving. I look forward to the reading the next book and can't wait to see Ellie's story (which from the author's website will be book #3). Overall, a great read. Very strong start to the series!

What a great debut by Sara Ramsey. I found myself anxious for Madeleine and rooting for Ferguson (even if he leans towards ginger-ness). The writing flows easily with enough description to paint the picture without being heavy handed or extraneous. The characters are unique and the twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing. I love the introduction to the other 'Muses' - can't wait for the next book in the series!
