Présentation de l'éditeur

The Hellenistic period began with the considerable expansion of the Greek world through the Macedonian conquest of the Persian empire and ended with Rome becoming the predominant political force in that world. This new and enlarged edition of Michel Austin's seminal work provides a panoramic view of this world through the medium of ancient sources. It now comprises over three hundred texts from literary, epigraphic and papyrological sources which are presented in original translations and supported by introductory sections, detailed notes and references, chronological tables, maps, illustrations of coins, and a full analytical index. The first edition has won widespread admiration since its publication in 1981. Updated with reference to the most recent scholarship on the subject, this new edition will prove invaluable for the study of a period which has received increasing recognition.

Biographie de l'auteur

Michel Austin is Honorary Senior Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of St Andrews. His previous publications include Economic and Social History of Ancient Greece. An Introduction. He is the author of numerous articles and was a contributor to the Cambridge Ancient History vol. VI (2nd edition).

A companion to Shipley's book 23 janvier 2009
Par Matajimaya - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This book gives you excerpts rare to find of letters and decrees written during the Hellenistic period. It goes hand in hand with the book by Shipley, The Greek World. It has pictures of coins, a copious bibliography, and chronological tables. The selection of texts is judicious. More than 300 texts from this period of antiquity is given to us all in English with notes and explanations, introductions, and references to other authors on the subject. As we start to know more about the Hellenistic times, we also start to study it more. This book is very helpful, if not a must, for the student and the scholar who earnestly want to know more about this fascinating topic.

Excellent Research Tool 10 avril 2011
Par Thomas Sprimont - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
For anyone doing research in this period, this book is a must. The material is organized chronological, with dozens of specific topics covering important events and the men behind them. This allows one to quickly identify relevant topics to their own work, and enables one to synthesize historical facts to support of refute their thesis. Source texts are translated and clearly referenced.

An indispensable book.
Fulfills well the history of Greece 24 mars 2013
Par Glenn Giese - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Following on from reading Homer's "Iliad and Odyssey", Hesiod's "Theogony and Works and Days", Herodotus's "The Histories", then "The Landmark Thucydides", and then "The Landmark Xenophon's Hellenica", and Arrian's "The Campaigns of Alexander", this book assists in a very good overall history of Ancient Greek culture, war, politics and art from the Bronze age to the end of the Hellenic period. It the ties in well with Livy's "The Early History of Rome and following through to Livy's Rome in the Mediterranean. One can only fully recommend this book to all undergraduates of Greco-Roman History studies.
