Présentation de l'éditeur

The planet HELLHOLE, devastated by an ancient asteroid impact, is inhabited by only the hardiest and most desperate colonists. It is one of 54 remote frontier worlds forced to pay tribute to the corrupt Constellation, which is ruled by decadent nobles. An exiled rebel general, Tiber Adolphus, has now mounted a second rebellion against the Constellation, much larger than his earlier failed attempt.

This time Adolphus aligns himself with the Xayans, a resurrected alien race from Hellhole. As the ancient civilization awakens, the Xayans encourage colonists to immerse themselves in strange "slickwater" pools and acquire ancient alien memories. Their goal is to gather sufficient numbers to achieve ala'ru, an accelerated evolution that will transform them into godlike beings.

General Adolphus rallies his fellow rebels from across the vast Deep Zone to fight for their independence, while the ruthless leader of the Constellation, Diadem Michella, vows to eradicate the rebellion and all colonists on Hellhole. The Xayans add their "telemancy" defenses to the General's conventional military resources, until they reveal an enemy far more terrifying than the Army of the Constellation: a faction of rogue Xayans bent on the extermination of their race . . . and the destruction of any planet that happens to be in the way.

As a barrage of deadly asteroids hurtles toward Hellhole, and the Constellation's gigantic space fleet arrives for a final engagement against General Adolphus, the hardy settlers are caught between a human enemy that wants to raze their colony to the ground and much more powerful aliens who can destroy not only themselves, but human civilization, as well as the foundations of the universe itself.

This book finishes splendidly this very good trilogy. for the amateurs of Dune and other sagas (but this one finishes).
If you have some days to spend, this is one very good way of doing it.

This is a decent capstone to the trilogy. If you've weathered this far then like me, you found enough like able characters, interesting plot, and fascinating setting to read through to the end. However, this story -and trilogy as a whole- leaves a lot to be desired.

The good: the rich setting is further fleshed out, a few new and existing characters get more developed, and there's a hell of a twist.

The bad: character motivation, actions, and perceptiveness are still fairly... alien? Simple? Both heroes and villains have a distressing tendency to devolve to more two dimensional personas at times. And while there's a good twist, there's also a fairly bad one in the form of a "sudden, inevitable" and completely unforeshadowed betrayal.

On balance, it's an easy read, and if you're a fan of SF pulp (monarchies in space, colorful psychic aliens, daring space fights) and can manage to ignore some of the more teeth-grinding moments of character interaction, you'll enjoy this.

I have enjoyed the series. I figured out some of the plot twists before they happened, but not so much as to ruin the story. The entire trilogy has been well done. It was nice to have the species rift explained. Glad that some of the characters got their comumpance.

This final book of the series nicely wraps everything up. These two authors really know how to write space opera.

Although the General has twice defeated the Constellation armada, they still pose a threat. And he also faces the greater threat of the Ro-Xayans who in the previous book destroyed the Deep Zone planet Candela with two asteroids. We also learned in the previous book that they were also responsible for bombarding their home planet Hellhole many eons ago.

There is a big reveal near the end of this final book that changes everything.

Hellhole is a long and complex trilogy. I was glad when Anderson and Herbert got the 3rd installment completed. The story has lots of threads that need to be followed and lots of "scientific" concepts that require the reader to suspend judgement, but it all hangs together. They are able to describe scenes clearly enough so the reader can visualize all of the strange landscapes and situations. The Xayans (the alien life forms) also were described well enough to form clear pictures. It was a satisfying read.

If you can look past the exhaustingly wordy character names book three brings all the plot points to a rather abrupt end. It is a bit clustered as you bounce between the different stories. I don't want to get too into details but a lot of people have bashed on the writers in the past. This series is entertaining but so closely plotted to the Dune-type story line it often over shadows any enjoyment.
