Présentation de l'éditeur

Curious About The History, Magic, Myths and Legends of 28 common Herbs?

The almost mystical healing power of herbs and their ability to ease pain can be traced back to the very beginnings of history. Early tribes and groups began instinctively experimenting with plants in their environment. Since they didn’t have the luxury of a pharmaceutical laboratory, they discovered by trial and error which locally grown plants and herbs were effective in treating their ailments. This growing accumulation of knowledge was then passed from each generation to another by word-of-mouth and practical teaching. Artifacts have been discovered from many cultures that include such items as frescoes, bronzes, tomb paintings and cuneiform tablets. These artifacts record the importance of herbs to these early civilizations. Ancient herbals and medical writings that still exist today describe plants and herbs and their healing properties.

Through time this collected knowledge created an herbal lore culture that has evolved with usage. For instance, priests etc. of ancient societies used herbs in the performance of their religious ceremonies for effect and protection. Warriors carried magical herbs for strength, protection and bravery. Later medieval monasteries were the centers of communities and thus became centers of herbal healing. They founded hospitals and had separate psyche gardens where the Monks grew a wide variety of plants to make the potions, oils and ointments they needed to treat the sick. On the other side of the coin, the hedgerows and woodlands provided the plants needed by the country housewife for her herbal healing and magical protections.
Throughout this book you will discover many strands of historical tradition. One such tradition was what is known as the Victorian language of flowers. In the 19th century England the practice was to give different flowers special meanings. And when fresh flowers and dried bouquets were given to someone they indicated a particular feeling. One example of this is when Rosemary was incorporated into a bouquet of red roses. The meaning of this was love and remembrance and it was a gift usually given to women by the men as they went off to war. While not directly magical, the power of symbolism reflects in the use of flowers deep personal feeling and how they are incorporated in remedies and the intentions associated with them.
This book presents you with the historical and mythological story behind many of the herbs in common use today. In this book you will also find recipes for teas, concoctions and tasty treats. Enjoy the book and may the magic of herbs bring health, prosperity, love and a long life to you.

I love to watch cooking shows on TV like Chopped or Eat St. And I marvel at the variety of spices they use in these shows but they go through them so fast that I can hardly remember the names of the herbs and spices used. My mother taught me to cook but she did not use that many herbs and spices. So this book intrigued me. It was well researched and laid out in an easy to understand and use format. I loved the graphics, pictures and recipes the authors used throughout the book. I loved the explanation of each herb, the common name descriptions and common uses were very helpful. Another section tells the properties of tea and how to make herbal teas which are my favorite drinks. Another useful section was the herbal tidbits. I can hardly wait for the recipe for the natural mosquito repellent using essential oils. I am all about natural organic products and using them in my home for myself and my family. I really enjoyed this book. Great read and Great book.

This is a very useful book to have on hand. There are 28 different herbs listed. Each herb has a color picture, the common name and what its used for. It also lists the magical powers, gender, planet and the history of each herb. There's an integrated menu at the beginning of the book so you don't have to scroll through the entire book to find the herb you want. There's a section on herbal teas and syrups and how to make them. There's another section on how to make potpourri. The only thing I saw missing was a "reverse" menu, one listing illnesses so you could find the correct herbal remedy without reading them all.

Want to know about Angelica and that people used to use it to keep their teenager's hormones domesticated? No?
How about what herbs to burn to keep your head in check and disperse your imagined monsters under the bed? No?
Then I'm sorry this book is not for you.
The focus is more on their homeopathic properties than witchcraft (though it warns against using the text to start into those practices) and it's not the best field guide to take out to the deep woods with, but it is a good leisurely read to gain interest in pretend medicinal herbology with recipes for tea, incense, oils, and the ilk.

I think many times we do not acknowledge what nature has to offer and to what extent we can enjoy nature, without harming or destroying her. This book is a collection of what nature has to offer and some of the benefits we can enjoy from herbs. This is to a certain extent a nature's dictionary, providing details about herb and their historical and magical usages - all of this making out of an herb dictionary quite an interesting and fun to read book. There are also some herb recipes that can prove to be very practical to know and use.

What might seem a practical set of advice only on herbs usage proved to be a very interesting and detailed historical and popular beliefs research on herbs usage. A complete herbs dictionary that provides a detailed description of each plant, some historical and magical usage examples and of course some recipes and recommendations about how the respective herb can be used and the benefit delivered by it. A good to have handy plant dictionary, which goes beyond the essentials making out of it an interesting book.
