This is essential for lovers of jazz music and piano performance. Koch Jazz is to be commended for reissuing this long out of print recording.
In the mid-fiftees, word had been getting around the jazz circles of New York City about the "discovery" of a 24 year old musical phenon. In fact, Phineas Newborn, Jr. had been playing professionally in and around Memphis since his teens. The word on the East coast streets was that he could play faster than just about anyone with an incredible command of the keyboard.
It didn't take long before arrangements were made to have Phineas - - the name is pronounced "Fine - us" - - ushered into the recording studios for an Atlantic records debut album. Along for the ride was a solid rhythm section consisting of Oscar Pettiford on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Calvin Newborn, the brother on Phineas, comping on guitar. The intent of this recording was to introduce Phineas Newborn, Jr. to the world.
"Junior" didn't disappoint. This CD contains eight tracks of astonishing music. The album is a showcase for the young musical genius. You've heard "All The Things You Are" and "Afternoon In Paris" countless times by countless other performers. But in the hands of Newborn, it's as if you're hearing it for the first time. You marvel at that incredible techique - - that pianistic ability to play just about anything. You're hearing it but you can't imagine how he's playing it. After repeated listenings, you begin to notice a profound musical depth. "Newport Blues", with Newborn alone on piano, reminds us just where jazz music comes from while at the same time showing us where it can go.
Phineas went on to record more albums, all of which are highly recommended. But this is the first and it is essential. Superior jazz piano playing on a stunning debut recording! If you don't know about Phineas - - and the chances are you don't - - this is an excellent introduction.

This has been with me for 50+ years. IMO Mr. Newborn was technically equivalent to, but emotionally superior to, Art Tatum. Still wonderful to listen to!

Par Mike Tarrani - Publié sur Amazon.com
My first introduction to Newborn was his performance on Jazz Scene USA, a TV program hosted by Oscar Brown that aired in 1962. It was jaw dropping to say the least.

This album is astonishing on many levels. First is the absolute virtuosity with which he plays on all tracks. In fact, the opening track - Barbados - reminded me of Art Tatum in many ways. The speed and facility with which his fingers dance across the keys boggles the mind. However, on the next track he downshifts into playing that can only be described as lush.

Instead of attempting to describe the music in my inadequate words, listen instead to the sound samples on this page. They are sufficiently long to convey the music on this album and the genius of Newborn who has sadly been relegated to obscurity.

This album was recorded in two sessions in NYC for Atlantic Records. I am betting that the Legendary Tom Down was the engineer (if not also the producer) because the sound quality is superb. The sessions were May 3 and 4, 1956, with Newborn backed by his brother Calvin on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass and one of my drummer idols, Kenny Clarke. In fact, Pettiford and Clarke on this album epitomize what a world class rhythm section sounds like and is worth studying if you are a bassist or drummer.

For an inaugural album this one should have sealed Newborn's place alongside Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson for virtuosity. That it did not is one of life's injustices. The good news, though, is this album is still in print and will probably continue to astonish folks who are just 'discovering' Newborn. It's a gem that is worth grabbing in my opinion.

This is simply the best record of Phineas. Just amazing! His other records can t compete with this one. I can recommend this CD.
