Présentation de l'éditeur

An inspiring new book from one of our greatest living spiritual teachers.

All of these stories teach us that we aren't who we think we are. How we have defined ourselves is not the truth of ourselves. What we think we must have is already present, and when we think we have lost the value of our lives, it is still here if we know where to look.
-from Hidden Treasure

In this life-changing book, renowned spiritual teacher Gangaji uses the telling of her own life story to help readers uncover the truth of their own. Antoinette (Toni) Roberson Varner was given the name Gangaji by her teacher Sri H. W. L. Poonja in 1990. Before that meeting, she had pursued many paths to enlightenment. Brought up in the 1950s in the racially divided south, she married young and had a daughter. Following the dissolution of her first marriage, she moved to Northern California and immersed herself fully in the spiritual culture that was flourishing there-but all her efforts to achieve lasting fulfillment ultimately fell short. In the wake of her disillusionment, she made a final prayer for help. In 1990, the answer to her prayer came unexpectedly, taking her to India and to the meeting that would change everything. There on the banks of the river Ganges, she met Poonja, also known as Papaji, who opened her mind to the eternal presence of being.

In Hidden Treasure, Gangaji guides readers to the realization that once they can uncover and speak the truth about themselves, deep and lasting contentment is entirely possible.

Reading Hidden Treasure gently drops the reader into the very state of consciousness that is being written about: the awareness of Truth. A teaching story about how we resist and react to our circumstances, and Gangaji's own personal stories that are sometimes raw-- always honest--provide a thread of connection for disrobing our personal story of how we define ourselves. With astonishing clarity Gangaji's words illuminate a path to the inner silence where we can experience the unchanging face of our existence. The practice of returning over and again to our core nature is not always easy or pretty, but always worthwhile if we desire lasting inner peace and contentment, we are reminded.

"How can we live lives, which most certainly are stories, and yet not be defined by these stories? We can be free in the story of ourselves, we can live free of any definition of ourselves. That freedom rests on the recognition of the nature of change and changelessness. The changeless is the conscious, silent awareness that is present regardless of any turn of events, regardless of any clothing. If we overlook changeless, silent awareness, we overlook that which is already free of all bondage, free of any definition of freedom."

A book for our times, by a teacher for our times.
Gangaji distills her 20 years of teaching into these 207 pages.
Using the telling of her own life story, she guides the reader in uncovering and speaking the truth about their own life stories so they can open the doorway to the possibility of living freely and in truth, right here, right now

I wasn't sure at first about this book. I love Gangaji, and in addition to attending satsang with her, have read or listened to many of her offerings. She is one of my favorite contemporary teachers (although she doesn't like the term teacher.) But when I first started this book, I was feeling restless, and a bit impatient with things I had 'heard' before. I am familiar with much of her life story already, as well as with her language for pointing us back to ourselves. I stuck it out though, and I am so glad I did. This book offers a transmission that I found deepened chapter by chapter. It isn't necessarily an easy read, and for those already familiar with her, and with inquiry traditions, it might not offer anything 'new', but that is really besides the point. In this day and age, the desire to receive new teachings, to gather more and more, is often part of the distraction that keeps us from finding source/truth/silent awareness ourselves.

By sharing excerpts from her own life story, and a parable (the Hidden Treasure of the title), and looking at both from different perspectives chapter by chapter, Gangaji shows us how to look at our own life story, our own 'I' creation, as a pointer to truth. She offers explanatory questions at the end of each chapter, as an invitation to inquiry. For those not already familiar with her and what she offers, it is an excellent introduction. It's worth noting that this isn't an autobiography in any traditional sense, however. She only shares experiences from her life to elucidate the themes she is exploring. They are all 'teaching stories', and she invites us to look into our own story in the same way. As the book progresses, I think the transmission deepens, and the invitation to discover this for ourselves does too.

For me, this new book by Gangaji did not include anything new that I have not heard from her before. It has value as a reminder, as a pointer. There's nothing catchy about her writing style. It plods along. But I did read it through to the end. She is a valuable voice, an invitation to STOP telling the story and rest in the stillness that is always here.

What is your life story? Has it created an identity that is not the real you? Are you suffering because of your story and wondering what you can do about it? In this soulful and heartfelt new book, Gangaji invites you to explore these concepts as well as others to help you discover the truth of who you really are and to find lasting inner peace and fulfillment. To assist you with your search for your true self, Gangaji offers the "naked truth" of her life story as an example of how she searched for and eventually found her true self. Her deeply personal story sets the stage for you to begin your inquiry into the story or narrative that may limit you. She encourages you to let those limitations go so that you too may discover your true self and lifelong contentment. Filled with insight, emotion and probing questions, this treasure is sure to please all conscious awareness seekers.
