Présentation de l'éditeur

Elena MacFarland wonders what everyone else knows about her new farm that she doesn’t, and whether she’ll live long enough to find out. Betrayed by her fiancé and the powerful Worthington family, Elena fights back and negotiates a comfortable settlement with one small caveat: she must live in Scotland for two years. One kidnapping and two attempts on her life later, the darkly arrogant Scot, Faolan MacGailtry declares himself her new protector and moves into her farmhouse. Major problem? He was present at all three incidents. Elena decides to follow the adage to keep her friends close and enemies closer—but which is he? One by one, Elena uncovers Faolan’s darkest secrets: his Druid heritage, his connection to her past, and finally, the deadly curse that is powerful enough to destroy them both.

Reader notes: This is the first book of the Highland Destiny series and includes multiple paranormal elements, including Druidry, Fae, shapeshifting and magick. Heat level warning: slowly builds from extreme sexual tension toward full erotic romance.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 3.5 stars- Good read with just a few things keeping it from being great 13 avril 2012

Elena's life has just been turned upside down. All her carefully laid plans set for after passing the bar exam ruined. Now she has a chance to start over again in Scotland with a house and land she received from a settlement. It seems like a good deal, but things begin to go wrong from the time she leaves Arizona. It all begins with a run-in with a highlander named Faolan who has his own agenda. She discovers her life is in danger, but can she trust a strange man to help keep her safe or is he part of the problem? The chemistry between them certainly makes it difficult to push him away.

I was drawn into this story from the beginning. The characters were intriguing and it had a lot of suspense that made me keep reading to find out what happened next. Elena and Foalan were clearly meant for each other, but they had a lot of things working against them. You're kept wondering for awhile as to what is really going on that they aren't revealing. There is plenty of action, romance, and even humor as the story progresses to keep it from ever being dull. Readers familiar with Karen Marie Moning's Highlander/Fever series will notice some similarities in the Fae mythology used in this book, though it takes a slightly different slant.

This wasn't a novel I could easily predict the outcome. It had a lot of twists and turns in the plot, along with being considerably longer than expected. This was a good thing since it was enjoyable in most ways. The only problem with some of the twists was that a few didn't jive for me. Such as Elena discovering important information that she knew Faolan desperately needed and then keeping it from him until too late. She knew time was of the essence and yet she cited doubt in her discoveries as her reasoning for not telling him. This is despite the fact it is clear to anyone reading the story that there is nothing to doubt. This drove me crazy because it happened a few times with her and some of the others because they chose not to see the obvious. It seemed there could have been a better way to keep the plot going without using the insecurities of the characters as the main delay tactic. Maybe it's just me, though. I've been known to be picky.

For those who like their stories to be heavy on the romance, I will say this book provides it in spades. The sparks fly from the beginning between Elena and Faolon. They try to fight it, but weaken further every time they are together. Plenty of time was spent developing the relationship between them and there were numerous spicy scenes for readers who enjoy them (I skimmed most of them because I was more into the plot). Only the couple's doubts and stubbornness put a wrench into things, but don't think that stops them from getting close. They have a very difficult time resisting each other.

There are a few tiny plot holes that left me wondering. Such as why Faolan wore a kilt at the airport in Arizona in the beginning, but never wore one again for the rest of the book (which all takes place in Scotland where it would be more natural). Other unanswered questions may have been intentional since the author left the book open to sequels, either with the same main characters or with a guy (Gabhran) who was introduced in the latter part of the story. He certainly caught my attention and would be a great lead for his own novel. I would pick it up in a heartbeat if the author wrote it. She may have had a few things that niggled at me in this book, but I still enjoyed her writing enough that I'd be happy to read something else written by her. Highland Shift was definitely worth my time and I would recommend it to others.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 emotionally charged 11 avril 2012

i just stayed up all night until 7 am reading this book. it is different from other pnr in that it is not predictable. the main characters leave you guessing as the author weaves a strong tale that sucks her readers into this imaginary story.
the female charcters are brave yet loving and easy to relate to. the male charactors are strong handsome and yet not affraid to show their emotions. the villians are cartoon like predictable and evil. the secondary charactors are truely believable.
my one major problem with this book is that it has no ending. you have to read the next book to find out what happens to gavin the villians the main charactors and it left me feeling frustrated. there is not even a title of the next book to look forward to or a teaser chapter. not fair.

I really wanted to like this but it's a huge mess! If you told me it was a rough draft then that would make sense. I don't think anyone edited this. It needs to have at least 1/3 cut including the exorbitant number of sex scenes which the author pushes the limits on the more she writes so as to turn me off completely to the main characters. I have so many questions because there are contradictions in the story, too much extraneous info in one place, not enough development in another, then the last third of the book is like a choose your own adventure story. It felt like the author kept changing her mind and making up new stuff as she went and then suddenly she decided it was over and left so much unresolved. I feel like I should be compensated for finishing this mind numbing mess. So my recommendation is to AVOID THIS AUTHOR. Worst book I've read in years.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Couldn't finish it. 19 mai 2012

I guess I'm picky with books because this one I just could not finish (which doesn't happen often). I read about 75% of it. It started out ok but somewhere it lost it's way. The romance scenes had such cheesy dialogue that it made me rolled my eyes several times. I'm also sick to death of the "virgin" heroines that manage mind blowing orgasms. It had such great potential and the romance in the beginning was good and I like the characters...it just got weird as the book went on. You get what you pay for, I guess.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Exceptional Story Start of the Series and Epic In Nature 6 mai 2013

I really did not know what to expect from this novel other than it was very long at over 400 pages, but the reason was apparent by the end of the book. There was a lot of story to tell.

Let me start with the good stuff, the writing was good, the story was good, the setting was good, the heroine was strong, and the hero was a bit of a mixture of a clod and gentleman. The secondary characters are done well, and one of them introduced late in the book is used for the main character in book 2 it seems.

The book starts in great style (which you can see in the 4+ chapters in the teaser on Amazon), and so begins a novel of love, betrayal, and complications that make your head swim.

The less than good stuff is minimal, but I always hate it when an author makes characters do something stupid just to make their writing easier and there are at least 3 or 4 situations of this nature that grate on my nerves.

The ultimate insult to my intelligence is when the same thugs attack our heroine and are going to rape her on TWO occasions and she thinks that letting them go is a great idea. I should mention that I LOVE revenge in my novels, nothing more satisfying than revenge for my personal "revenge junkie," well, this book almost killed him.

I do enjoy a well written story where the love and passion of the main couple is clear and suffers from little angst that most authors seem to love, but this guy grabbing her every time she stopped moving and that wore thin by the time 400 pages was finished IMHO.

I should point out in spite of my comments this is a great story which I enjoyed, the second book is set up well and the ending of this one done excellent (meaning no cliffhanger). You know the future may get violent and test the star crossed lovers again.

So all things considered, and the fact that I am looking forward to the next book make this a solid 4 Star reading experience.
