HASH(0x9b4faf9c) étoiles sur 5 An excellent rendition 12 février 2014

I had gotten to know the Hindemith Organ Sonatas through the E. Power Biggs interpretation, and part of my love for it is the sound of the little Flentrop organ in the relatively small space of the (former) Busch-Reisinger. I only had vinyl for this, and sought a CD; fell on this and fell in love. The interpretation is rather similar to the Biggs so not shocking to me, but the timing and voicing is better. The organ and space are a little large for my taste, but the bottom line is that this is the best interpretation I have ever heard (not heard it played live, unfortunately).

I'm an organ music fan, which I attribute to my mother, who is an organist. Paul Hindemith wrote these three intriguing sonatas for organ, which range from soft & soothing to loud & heavy. It's unfortunate they're not so widely known. Hurford performs them masterfully. I tracked down the sheet music for Sonata I, and my mom ended up playing it in a concert. Highly recommended. The additional material fills out the album nicely.

This is one of the very few records where you can find Hindemith's THREE sonatas.

It's now out of stock nearly everywhere ( in Europe I could just find one in German Amazon.de ), but what makes it so precious is the fact it was recorded in Northern Germany RATZEBURG Cathedral, a splendid instrument with horizontal " Spanische Trumpeten ".

With a BeyerDynamic "Pro" pair of High Grade Headphones, it sounds gorgeous , and I'm very surprised to hear that this 1986 CD is in fact an old vynil 33 rpm, as it sometimes sounds better than Cd's made in 2010 ! Not a single trace of hiss, for example, wide dynamics and absolutely No obtrusive noise....

May be different series exist ? Mine comes from DECCA LONDON.

No problem: I know Peter Hurford and will try to ask him....

And as concerns the works, it's a pity these sonatas are not more widely known,as they deserve it ( I have studied the three of them ).

A final word about Hugo Distler's pieces : it's a real pity the invasion by the Nazi regime led him to suicide so early....There would no doubt have been a lot of interesting works !

Outside of a couple of "skips", this is a rare recording of one of the greatest of modern organ composers, Hindemith, and seldom heard. It is a transfer from Vinyl to CD, IIRC, but the overall quality is quite good.

I bought it primarily as a teaching assistance to me, in learning these sonatas, and works very well for me. It is well worth it, just to be able to hear this often overloooked composer in the modern realm, whose music is accessible to the average listener, yet not predictable.

The Distler is also terrific, another modern composer for the organ and prolific in his own right. He left us church organists a legacy in both large and small works, of high standard, great technical challenge to me as an organist, and pure gems for the listening congregation. This would be a good entry into his works to anyone not familiar with Distler.

This is a review of the vendor, not of the music itself, which is amazing! About the vendor: the Recording itself is ok, the CD itself seems to be homemade, the booklet was not included (I really would have liked it). There was one small glitch in one of the pieces, thankfully not in the piece I was most concerned with when I bought the CD. I got the music I wanted, so I am happy about that, but the CD is not exactly a gem in my collection.
