What woman would dare make her home at eerie Marshbanks Abbey, perched on a stony hill in remote Northumbria? It is said its owner, the brilliant botanist, Lord Stacks, killed his beautiful bride there ten years earlier.

Unaware of the tales of Lord Stacks' wickedness, Freddie Lambeth comes to live with her guardian, and through his caring blossoms from a plain, shabbily dressed girl to a lovely young woman. Freddie and Lord Stacks come to need each other as his flowers need sunshine, but Stacks cannot allow himself to love her. His own wickedness has destroyed any chance for happiness.

EXCERPT:

Was he in a hurry to be rid of her? At least he wanted a sensational mate for her. There was only one mate for her, she thought morosely. And he would be sensational. She closed her eyes and thought of being enfolded in Lord Stack's strong embrace, of resting her face against his chest, of lifting her lips to his. She grew hot as she imagined what it would feel like to have his mouth on hers, his tongue parting her lips. A wet heat centered between her legs. Her thoughts drifted even further away. She thought of lying with him, wet flesh against wet flesh. She could almost feel his mouth close around one breast.

"You do not look happy," he said.

She drew a deep breath and faced him. "It seems my company grows tedious for you. You are in so great a haste to marry me off, to be rid of me."

He reached out and touched a finger to her cheek. "I attempt to be selfless, Miss Lambeth. I want what is best for you. For myself, I would have you at Marshbanks Abbey until the end of my days."

Until the end of his days. If only. . . He studied her face for a moment. "I believe the prospect does not offend you."

"You must believe me when I tell you I've never been happier than in these past few months at the abbey." She had wanted to say these past few months with you.

"Then your life must have been singularly uneventful before."

She smiled. "That, too."

He took a sip of wine, peering at her over the rim of his glass. "Do you miss your father?"

She gathered a handful of soft fabric from her skirt into her hand. "To be honest, no."

His brows lowered. "How can that be? You seem to worry over every creature. You are so very caring."

"The exact word I would use to describe you, my lord. However, caring is not a word I would use to describe my father, although he did care very much for my mother. Unfortunately, he held me responsible for taking her from him."

"But that's ridiculous! You didn't ask to be born!"

"He did not see it that way."

Stacks watched the leaves of the tree shimmer in the breeze and did not speak for a moment. "So that explains why your education in the feminine arts was so neglected."

She nodded. "You have shown me more love in these past few months than I received in an entire lifetime." She felt her cheeks growing hot. Why had she used the word love? She had not meant to burden him with details of her unhappy life, but she felt incredibly open whenever she was with him. "That is why I've been so happy here, why I am in no hurry to leave the walls of Marshbanks Abbey."

He reached out and took her hand. "You have a home here for as long as you want."

She looked up at him, her eyes swimming in pools of unshed tears.

Lord Stacks was moving to her. She felt his arms close around her. She felt his warm breath on her cheek, and she lif

3.0 étoiles sur 5 A Good Idea Wasted 18 septembre 2011

What a compelling idea--a handsome hero with the suspicion of the murder of his first wife hanging over his head, now entrusted with the raising of his best friend's daughter. The author however falls into the trap of telling rather than showing us what is wicked about this lord. How wicked could he be if only one person seems to hold the murder against the baron--the local doctor who is enamored of the young ward? Instead, the neighborhood turns out for any dinner party or ball the lord holds, and several men compete for the young ward's hand, even though she is penniless. In addition, several women compete for the lord's hand--and their families seem fine with it all.

In other words, the central drama is not a drama at all. In fact, it all comes out in a rush of last-minute revelations. Within a few pages we learn the truth of the first wife's history, find the true criminal, resolve the love match--in a race to a true love ending. What a difference it would have made if the mystery came out slowly and there was more evidence that more than one person felt the lord was indeed wicked.

The attraction between the two leads never seems quite real. I wondered if indeed Freddie was in love because Stacks was the first person to truly care and value her. The issue of age difference never was truly explored.

On the plus side, it was refreshing to see a young woman with intellectual gifts, good judgement about the people around her, including her father, and a male lead who believes in allowing a woman to make her own decisions about her life.

Not a bad way to spend a few hours--but sadly, it could have been a great reading experience.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Fun read, but suffers from poor editing 11 septembre 2011

I enjoyed this book - interesting story, interesting characters. I was, however, put off by some rather egregious editing errors. For example, in one scene the lady's maid exits the bedchamber, only to walk from the far side of the room and exit the bedchamber again only about three sentences later. There was another instance where some words were clearly missing from a paragraph, rendering it nonsensical. The dressmaker is referred to as a modiste at the beginning of the book, and then suddenly near the end she turns into a mantuamaker - sort of like a general contractor turning into a plumber (?). All of this speaks to a careless attitude towards the finished product.

The big disappointment, however, was the Tragic Misunderstanding between the "wicked" hero and the heroine near the end of the book. I hate it when a previously bright heroine suddenly turns into a nitwit by failing to ask even one very simple question about a situation that will impact the rest of her life. Instant martyrdom: "He doesn't want me! I must let him go! And settle for that other dumb bloke! (You know - the one who is cute but doesn't sizzle!) OH! Woe is me! Sniff!" The inconsistencies (and the poor editing) make me wonder if this was a book started by one person and finished by another.

Just thought I'd mention it...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Very satisfying in every way 6 septembre 2011

Regency Romance with likable heroine and hero, as well as supporting cast. The premise is believable, and well written. I agree with the first review, as it is slightly gothic, but very well done. I have paid much more and received very much less than what is found in this satisfying story.... worth every minute spent with these lovable characters, as well as the dastardly villians!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Regency with a Gothic twist 7 septembre 2011

My Lord Wicked is Regency romance with a few twists.

When Miss Freddie Lambeth arrives at the isolated North Country home of her guardian, Lord Stacks, he is most disconcerted. All he knew of his ward, the child of his old Oxford friend, was the name Freddie; he is expecting Frederick, not Fredericka.

Far from a society beauty, Freddie has spent her eighteen years in the country, assisting her late father with his surgery practice, mixing herbs and medicines for him. Drawn to Lord Stacks by his considerate manner--and his botanical knowledge--she refuses to believe the rumors about his wicked past.

Lord Stacks takes those rumors, and the memory of his late wife's tragic and unexplained death, all too seriously, and for the sake of her reputation he plans to send Freddie back to her life as the poor relation in her uncle's household. But somehow those plans prove all too difficult to act upon.

Despite the difference in their ages--and the local suitors for Freddie's hand--guardian and ward are kindred spirits. But the mystery of Lady Stacks' death threatens to keep them apart forever.

The author's deep knowledge of the Regency period provides a fascinating picture of country life, far away from the typical London society setting. Her characters remain true to their time and place, and her plot adds a Gothic twist to the romance.

My Lord Wicked is another highly enjoyable read from Cheryl Bolen.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A fun read for historical romance lovers! 6 septembre 2011

This is a great value read and one I quite enjoyed. I won't go into a plot description as I think the summary above is apt enough.

It was a fun story with the usual regency drama that hinted at gothic elements - the characters were likable enough, and struck me as very Jane Eyre in feel. I have read MANY historical romances and this was a more enjoyable read than the majority I have come across, so I am really happy with this purchase. Is this the best book ever? No. But for $1 this deserves 5 stars for such good quality and value. Thank you for sharing your work for such a little price!
