Book Description

Maurice LeBlanc's gentleman thief returns in this intricately plotted tale of disguises, loot, and love. Once more Lupin is at large, snatching fortunes from under the noses of the wealthy. But this time he may have met his match . . . and not in his usual nemeses, Inspector Ganimard or Holmlock Shears, but in a bright school student who manages to penetrate his secrets -- and reaches his treasure-trove! But the greatest danger may be the woman with whom Lupin has fallen in love, for she has made him promise to give up his life of crime forever!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Lupin's best 27 novembre 2007
Par Riccardo Pelizzo - Publié sur
Lupin for most, especially young readers, is one of the characters of the Potter saga.
For those who are a bit older, it is a cartoon and manga hero.
For those who are even older, Lupin is the villain-hero of a successful, tv-series, produced in France, and based on the character developed by Maurice Leblanc.
Leblanc, whose house is now the Lupin's museum, created this gentleman thief, he made him fight against sherlock holmes, and used in several adventures such as the blonde phantom.
Of all the Lupin's adventures penned by Leblanc, the Hollow Needle is the best--there is wit, action, intrigue, unexpected twists, references to historical places and events, references to past events that never occurred and there is some romance.
It's a lot of fun, it's definitely worth reading.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A well crafted story. 29 mai 2010

First published in 1909, this is a fast-paced story with "Gentleman Bandit" Arsene Lupin pitting his wits against a brilliant young student named Isidore Beautrelet. A theft, a shooting, and a kidnapping leave the local police baffled. When Beautrelet shows up from out of nowhere offering to help, the police are at first hesitant. But the young man seems to understand the Bandit's mind. Lots of twists and turns and disguises. The author was often compared to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Playing on this, Leblanc gives a character named "Holmlock Shears" an appearance in the book.

Well written. Everything comes together for a great ending.

This book is an Arsene Lupin mystery classc in the "Sherlock Holmes" tradition. I first read it over forty years ago and now I have just read it again. Even though the writing style is somewhat dated the story is still intriguing - a page turner. Because the book was inspired by the actual Hollow Needle in Etretat, France, a llittle internet reasearch will reveal that many people believe the Hollow Needle to be really hollow as the book suggests. This is denied by everybody that counts, including French authorities. However, conspiracy theory lovers will prefer to believe that the Hollow Needle IS hollow, only the French government has taken all measures to hide the facts revealed by this book. Hollow the needle or not, the book is still a great read, a timeless masterpiece. Hope you will love it as much as I did.

I gave Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes a perfect five stars but I’m not going to be as generous this time. Herlock Sholmes was an excellent adversary for Lupin and the two spent the entire book in a back and forth battle. I felt the ending was respectful towards fans of Sherlock Holmes and essentially ended the story in a draw. Herlock Sholmes reappears in The Hollow Needle (this time named Holmlock Shears) but Maurice LeBlanc throws the character in the garbage making him a total inferior to Lupin. Even Inspector Ganimard is made to look like a chump and the true adversary of Lupin is a young student named Isidore Beautrelet who is able to deduce the particulars of a Lupin crime early in the book. Will Beautrelet be the man to finally bring Lupin to justice?

Here is the issue with The Hollow Needle. LeBlanc tends to skirt the edge between making Lupin a super criminal and basically make him omnipotent. If Lupin is omnipotent he’s not a compelling character. Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes was engaging because Holmes was able to win several victories over Lupin and although it appears at first that Isidore Beautrelet might give Lupin a challenge later on it becomes clear that Beautrelet is wholly overmatched. By the end of the book Lupin appears to be omniscient, able to control all events, rob at will and disguise himself as anyone. The magnitude of his criminal activity in The Hollow Needle is such that I have to wonder what he could possibly follow it up with. LeBlanc basically removes any tension by making his main character invincible.

I’m hoping that LeBlanc scales things back in 813 because as far as I’m concerned he takes Lupin way too far in this book. That’s not to say that the book doesn’t have some great moments and early on when it seems like Beautrelet might be a challenge it’s fun and there is some very clever writing. I’ll give the book four stars but if LeBlanc doesn’t tone down his super criminal the next book may lose another star.
