Quick fix 22 mai 2012
Par wogan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Sophie Wright is an award winning, young English chef. She has made a cookbook with some interesting meals that take less than an hour to cook and prepare. The book contains; every day, watching your pennies, posh nosh, informal eating, desserts and drinks. Most dishes have large pictures. Each recipe has the total time and then broken down into preparation and cooking. For many dishes there are also ideas of ingredients that can be substituted. There is a 30 minute meals index, a 30-60 minute meals and an ingredients index. Some simple lists included in the beginning are; essential ingredients and equipment and some cooking tips.

The recipes are all relatively easy, most of what makes them easy to prepare are ready cooked rice, lentils, bouillon. There are comments on the recipes, usually one recipe to a page and even some help like: if you do not have a bamboo steamer, use an upturned sauce in the bottom of a shallow pan with a lid. Terms such as lardons are translated in to American = smoked bacon.
We have enjoyed these recipes especially; chicken, leek and bacon pie, and easy mess - much like Eton mess- a delectable dessert that you should try, and her version of creamy macaroni and cheese made with Boursin, cream cheese and mozzarella - it's very good.

Overall love this recipe book, with a caveat: 21 mai 2013

I received this recipe book as a gift from friends about a year ago and have enjoyed a number of meals from it. Most of the recipes are simple, but do take 30-40 minutes; still, that's within the "Home at 7, Dinner at 8" time-frame.

I appreciate that the margins include ideas for changing up the recipes slightly as well as Sophie's suggestions in the beginning of the book for items that you should always have on hand and ways to cut down on prep time.

A caveat: DO NOT believe her portion sizes. Time and time again I've reviewed recipes prior to shopping for ingredients and thought "this is supposed to serve 4? Seems more like an 8 person dish" but went ahead with her quantities. I usually like to make 2-4 person dishes for myself to have leftovers for a couple days, but it does me no good to have a dish for 8 that I'll get bored of halfway through the week. Even for recipes she indicates will feed 1 or 2 light meals, they've proven to yield about double. Trust your gut.

Quick and easy recipes 16 août 2014

As new and working parents, my husband and I needed a cookbook with easy and simple recipes that we can put together after work. It was starting to be too expensive to eat out or get take-out every week. The book is divided into a few sections: every day, watching your pennies, posh nosh, informal eating, desserts and drinks with easy recipes that would be made in about an hour. The book gives you prep time and cook time but it usually takes us 15 min more than the recipes call for. It’s really nice that most of the recipes are accompanied with pictures so you can see what the final product should look like. As food bloggers, my husband and I appreciate the beautiful photography.

So far we have enjoyed the roasted squash salad, baked salmon with pancetta, baked gnocchi with smoked salmon, creamy macaroni and cheese, and bbq Chinese ribs. We didn’t find these dishes too flavorful: the asian noodle soup with shrimp, zucchini linguine, red wine and gorgonzola risotto, lemongrass steamed shrimp, and pineapple skewers. We’re looking forward to trying the white crab and green apple cocktail, baked skate wings, banana pudding with toffee sauce, and peach and pistachio trifle.

Overall, it’s a good cookbook with quick and easy recipes that you can make around 1 hour. It definitely has some creative recipes that are very tasty.

Tasty but far from fast.. 23 décembre 2012

I received this book as a gift when I started a new job where I was going to be working late, given that I loved cooking and eating home-cooked meals.

I have tried 4 recipes so far, and they have all been delectable (the chermoula was yuuuum, and so was the baked gnocchi)

However, I think it suffers from a few flaws:

1. the timing is really off, and I am not a novel cook! Of course, if you are trying a new recipe for the first time, it takes some more time, but still. For instance, I timed myself for a salad that is supposed to take 20 minutes and it took 40! True, I do the dishes as I cook, but if you don't you end up with an amazing dirty dishes production..

2. most recipes are not very healthy: the time you cut in cooking is made up with fat: butter, cream, etc..

I would definitely recommend this book for creative yummy recipes but I would consider it a cookbook to use once a month or two weeks..
Easy recipes but missing in flavour 27 janvier 2013

I bought this book because I liked the way the book was together. The recipes also looked simple and easy. So far I have made 5 or 6 of the recipes and only one has been good. The remaining recipes though pretty were missing something so much that I did not feel like going back for seconds. The flavour profile is missing as I had really high hopes for this book. I will try a few more of her recipes but the recipes definitely need much tweaking to truly delish!
