They rose up like men. We saw them. Like men they stood.

We shouldn’t have been anywhere near that place. Like most farmland outside Lotus, Georgia, this here one had plenty scary warning signs. The threats hung from wire mesh fences with wooden stakes every fifty or so feet. But when we saw a crawl space that some animal had dug—a coyote maybe, or a coon dog—we couldn’t resist. Just kids we were. The grass was shoulder high for her and waist high for me so, looking out for snakes, we crawled through it on our bellies. The reward was worth the harm grass juice and clouds of gnats did to our eyes, because there right in front of us, about fifty yards off, they stood like men. Their raised hooves crashing and striking, their manes tossing back from wild white eyes. They bit each other like dogs but when they stood, reared up on their hind legs, their forelegs around the withers of the other, we held our breath in wonder. One was rust-colored, the other deep black, both sunny with sweat. The neighs were not as frightening as the silence following a kick of hind legs into the lifted lips of the opponent. Nearby, colts and mares, indifferent, nibbled grass or looked away. Then it stopped. The rust-colored one dropped his head and pawed the ground while the winner loped off in an arc, nudging the mares before him.

As we elbowed back through the grass looking for the dug-out place, avoiding the line of parked trucks beyond, we lost our way. Although it took forever to re-sight the fence, neither of us panicked until we heard voices, urgent but low. I grabbed her arm and put a finger to my lips. Never lifting our heads, just peeping through the grass, we saw them pull a body from a wheelbarrow and throw it into a hole already waiting. One foot stuck up over the edge and quivered, as though it could get out, as though with a little effort it could break through the dirt being shoveled in. We could not see the faces of the men doing the burying, only their trousers; but we saw the edge of a spade drive the jerking foot down to join the rest of itself. When she saw that black foot with its creamy pink and mud-streaked sole being whacked into the grave, her whole body began to shake. I hugged her shoulders tight and tried to pull her trembling into my own bones because, as a brother four years older, I thought I could handle it. The men were long gone and the moon was a cantaloupe by the time we felt safe enough to disturb even one blade of grass and move on our stomachs, searching for the scooped-out part under the fence. When we got home we expected to be whipped or at least scolded for staying out so late, but the grown-ups did not notice us. Some disturbance had their attention.

Since you’re set on telling my story, whatever you think and whatever you write down, know this: I really forgot about the burial. I only remembered the horses. They were so beautiful. So brutal. And they stood like men.

Même s'il n'est pas en soi très étonnant, un phénomène intéressant frappe plusieurs figures marquantes des lettres américaines. Alors que leurs débuts se sont faits sous le signe d'un style assez flamboyant (chacun le sien), ils vont avec l'âge vers toujours plus d'économie de moyens et d'effets. Philip Roth signe aujourd'hui des titres marqués aussi bien par la brièveté que par une simplicité accrue (Indignation, Nemesis), Cormac McCarthy écrit de plus en plus à l'os (No Country for Old Men, The Road), Toni Morrison explique qu'elle aussi "travaille consciemment et énormément à cela : écrire moins et dire davantage. Ne pas écrire deux pages quand une phrase peut tout contenir. C'est bien plus difficile que de s'étaler. Et c'est ce que je veux désormais. C'est à la fois une envie et une nécessité - j'ai 81 ans, il faut que je fasse vite, donc que j'écrive court!" (Télérama, août 2012).

Ce qu'on avait déjà nettement pu déceler dans son roman précédent, A Mercy, devient éclatant avec Home. Jamais Toni Morrison n'a écrit un livre aussi court et surtout aussi épuré. Dans A Mercy, on retrouvait encore son goût des ruptures (narratives, temporelles, stylistiques).

J'aimais déjà beaucoup ses livres, durs mais très intéressants et très bien écrits où étaient mêlés des mythes et traditions africaines qui servaient à donner un certain merveilleux à une réalité sordide dont il semble trop difficile de s'extirper. Dans Home, un style épuré, parfaitement maitrisé, où aucun mot n'est de trop et où elle vous invite à observer, découvrir et du coup mieux sentir les sentiments du héros et son tragique destin lors de son retour de la guerre de 40 dans un monde qui malgré ces soldats n'a pas évolué.

Le dernier livre de Toni Morrison nous conduit à travers une Amérique des années 60 moins connue que celle qu'il nous été donnée de voir habituellement. Comme toujours chez l'auteur, c'est un portrait douloureux de la vie de la communauté noire aux États-Unis, mais dénuée de haine, qui fait la trame du livre. Le héros après une enfance de misère et une participation à la guerre de Corée qui l'a complètement perturbé, comme beaucoup, retourne sur les lieux de son enfance pour venir au secours de sa sœur maltraitée.
La langue est très poétique et si l'on est pas bilingue mais que l'on connait un peu l'anglais cela vaut la peine de faire l'effort de lire le livre en V.O.pour savourer le style, quitte à vérifier dans la traduction française quant l'on n'est pas sûr de ne pas faire de contresens.

Roman grave et extrêmement prenant, où l'auteure arrive à exprimer un maximum de choses en un minimum de mots, sur le racisme, la ségrégation, la dignité humaine, le retour aux sources, la fraternité... et sans jamais porter de jugements. Ecrit dans une langue sobre et poétique. Un petit chef d'œuvre!

C’est étrange, lorsque je commence certains romans de Toni Morrison je me sens tout de suite saisie. J’ai une vague boule à l’estomac, je me sens en alerte après quelques phrases. C’est probablement à cause de ce choix des mots si précis, de leur ordonnancement particulier et des images qu’ils évoquent. Il y a aussi l’attente, car la réalité n’est révélée que par bribes avec cet art de l’ellipse si singulier à Toni Morrison.

Dans 'Home', Frank Money, vétéran brisé de la guerre de Corée, doit retourner ‘chez lui’ en Géorgie – ou du moins ce qui s’apparente le plus à chez lui. Un an après avoir quitté l’armée, Frank a presque tout perdu et une lettre inquiétante d’une seule ligne le rappelle au pays où sa sœur, Cee, semble en danger. Il part de Seattle où il vit quasiment dans la rue. C’est au cours de ce voyage de retour chaotique et quasi halluciné que le passé de Frank revient par bribes, jusqu’à ce qu’il touche au but.

Difficile en quelques mots de parler de ce court roman pourtant si dense, si compact alors qu’il contient l’histoire de plusieurs vies, une atmosphère toujours lourde de la ségrégation raciale des années 50, et un personnage magnifique, terrifiant et si fragile. J’ai adoré et adhéré à chaque phrase de ce livre. Il me semble que Toni Morrison a gagné en force depuis qu’elle écrit des romans plus courts, plus épurés. C’est une grande, une vraie.

génial, comme d'habitude on plonge dans l univers de toni morrison ,on reconnait sa griffe qui m'enchante page apres page !!!!!!!

Un livre beau et rugueux à la fois. Un chef d'oeuvre d'humanité... c'est le premier livre de Toni Morrison que je lis mais ça ne sera certainement pas le dernier.
