This is a short prequel to the Chosen series. It deals with Will's frame of mind when he was dishonorably discharged from the Marines. He arrived home wanting nothing more than the comfort of his Mother. He got what he expected from his Father but not his Mom. This portion of the story is heartbreaking and really helps us to know what made Will the heart hardened man he was when he later met Emma. The rejection of his parents drives Will to seek out his best friend, James, who will also play a part in the Chosen series. Through James, he takes work of an "unethical" nature. Although the ending of the story is before he meets Emma and Jake, it lets us know how he got to that point.

Will never claimed to be a hero, nor did he claim to have a squeaky clean past. The guilt over the tragedy at the school in Iraq hovers around him like a dense fog he can't see through clearly. No one is capable of convincing him the blame his entirely his since he disobeyed orders to grab the terrorist. The visions that haunt his mind cloud his judgement and force him to harden his heart. In doing so, he paves the way to working for criminals with his unique set of skills. The stage is set for the packages he will be asked to deliver. If he only knew what was to come!

I already liked this character but this novella that opens his past to us in more detail made me cry with sympathy for him. Not only do these prequels give us more information about the story but they add to the character development in a way that makes them come to life. You don't have to read the prequels to read the novels in this series but I highly recommend you do. All of Denise Grover Swank's novellas are gems not to be missed.

Will Davenport returns home after his dishonorable discharge to find he's lost more than he thought. Full of self hatred Will does the only thing he can, accepts what he is. A monster. A murderer.
Denise Grover Swank brought me to tears with this short story. I knew it would be a heart wrenching story. I did not know she would have me balling like a baby. Will's selfloathing and heart break over his mother was what got me. A man seeking love and familiar comforting received the exact opposite. And it broke him. An already shattered soul broke further. Ms. Swank did not sugar coat his demons. She laid them all out there for me and I wanted to know every detail. She did it in her incredible writing style were I felt his heartbreak and the sense of loss.
A great tear jerking short story of insight to one of my "book boyfriends". LOL

I read the three short stories prior to reading The Chosen Series. While you can read the series first, I liked having the backstory on the characters prior to getting into the main books. Homecoming is Will's story and I have to admit, I developed a bit of a crush on him in it. I found myself wishing I could put myself into the pages to help him grieve and heal from all that he had to go through. DGS is so skilled at revealing the vulnerable sides of her characters and making them come to life.
