Présentation de l'éditeur

The rollicking sequel to Fortune's Pawn -- an action packed science fiction novel.

Devi Morris has a lot of problems. And not the fun, easy-to-shoot kind either.

After a mysterious attack left her short several memories and one partner, she's determined to keep her head down, do her job, and get on with her life. But even though Devi's not actually looking for it -- trouble keeps finding her. She sees things no one else can, the black stain on her hands is growing, and she is entangled with the cook she's supposed to hate.

But when a deadly crisis exposes far more of the truth than she bargained for, Devi discovers there's worse fates than being shot, and sometimes the only people you can trust are the ones who want you dead.

Very Enjoyable! 27 février 2014
Par Talvi - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I have to admit, I am very impressed that author Rachel Bach not only managed to meet the fun and excitement of the first book but also to keep the momentum going. The romance, that honestly felt tacked onto an other wise solid story in book 1, is given room to breathe here and with some surprising results. But really, the heart of the book is Devi - she is such a likeable character and you root for her the whole way as she continues tackling even bigger challenges head on.

Story: Devi is left confused - she knows the results of the last battle left her with memory holes but she really has no choice but to continue on fighting, hoping to eventually make a place for herself back home with the Devastators. But Devi now has a terrible secret, an ability gained after being bitten by one of the zombie Xith'Cal, and every single species in the universe is going to want her for it. What began with Devi protecting others will soon turn into Devi protecting herself - even at the expense of her friends on the Fool. For if she loses, death may not be the only horrific result.

Bach really upped the anti with this second book. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, the story went in a completely different direction (sometimes even circular!). The author kept me guessing, all the while rooting for Devi in every scenario. And unlike the first book, the romance didn't get in the way of the flow of the story as characters were forced to make very difficult decisions.

What I really like about this series is that there is no 'super bad evil villain' nor are the good guys all good. Each person is trying his best under trying situations and there is no clear right or wrong in the decisions being made. There are no evil aliens out to destroy humanity nor good guys sacrificing themselves to save the Earth. What we do have are hard choices, a vast array of interesting alien species with different characteristics, and a multi-layered story where the guy you trust will be the first one to sacrifice you if he feels he is doing it for the greater good.

About half way through Honor's Knight there is a large info dump that sets off a very interesting chain of events. So although we don't know everything about the overall arc that is slowly coming into focus, we are given enough information to keep the story interesting but the reader still guessing. That's the talent of any really good author.

But with all the great aliens, story arc, and riveting action, what makes this series good is that it is actually fun. So many of the military sci fi are dead dull with very serious characters. Devi is an everyman - completely obsessed with the military in a great way that isn't creepy (and heck, who doesn't like a girl who lovingly names her weapons and armor).

In all, I am greatly looking forward to book 3 in the series.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

Just as Thrilling as Book One - No Middle Book Syndrome Here 25 février 2014
Par Miss Bonnie - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
In the final moments of Fortune's Pawn, Devi discovers that Caldswell is not all that he appears to be and is actually a leader of the organization known as The Eyes, which are responsible for ridding the solar system of planet destroying phantoms that no one is aware of. Except she doesn't remember anything because Caldswell performed a memory wipe on her and not only does she not know who he truly is but now every time she looks at Rupert she develops an unreasonable repulsion towards him. Intent on moving on from the attack that took her memories, she begins to focus solely on her job again but problems continue to arise. The glowing bugs that no one else can still and the mysterious dark stain that spreads across her body are issues but it's becoming more and more clear that she doesn't have a single person she can trust anymore.

Much of Honor's Knight is spent in a state of confusion as Devi attempts to recall recent memories that constantly evade her. Despite her mental handicap, Devi never fails to be as fearless as we've come to expect from her, even more so when she's struggling for her very own survival. It seemed like there were fewer action scenes than in Fortune's Pawn as there was slightly more focus on world-building but the action we did see was still fierce and explosive making for yet another incredibly intense read. What I touted about Fortune's Pawn being sci-fi lite wasn't exactly the case with Honor's Knight. However, by this point I'm so immersed in this world and completely fascinated by Devi that I really enjoyed the added details and the expansion that went on in this installment.

The revelations are non-stop in this incredibly exciting second installment in the Paradox series. You won't find a hint of middle book syndrome, nor as brutal of a cliffhanger as the one in Fortune's Pawn, but you'll definitely be left antsy for the final installment.

No Rest for the Mercenaries! 11 mars 2014
Par Danielle E. Shipley - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
“Honor’s Knight” is an unrelenting ride that keeps the book’s heroine and readers alike questioning who’s on whose side, which side is which, and whether there’s anyone or anything Devi can trust besides her tricked-out powered armor (which is kind of one of my favorite characters, and it’s just a suit of machinery!).

It’s no longer just Devi’s career ambitions at stake, or even her own survival and increasingly overtaxed sanity. Whole galaxies are under a massive threat kept quiet by the powers that be, and the best shot at a weapon capable of saving the worlds may rest in Devi’s hands. …if only she knew how to wield it like she does her arsenal of guns.

The mystery deepens every step of the way, as does the danger, all of it running us full-tilt toward the climax that we have to wait ‘til the April 22, 2014 release of Book Three to know!

Rachel Bach certainly knows how to keep me in suspense, and how to keep me guessing. This is in no way a story that relies on the obvious. Even the romance, which you just know is going to work out in the end (…or which you /hope/ is going to work out… We can only pray that Devi isn’t pushed to deliver a death shot to Rupert right between the eyes, because 1) she just might do it and 2) one might not be entirely able to blame her), swerves wildly from any kind of simple path. You wanna talk about “it’s complicated”? These two have it complicated!

And seriously: Who are the good guys?? ‘Cause just when you think you know who’s got the best interests of the universe at heart, you’ve got to wonder about both their motives and their methods. It’s all way more than Devi signed up for, but you can bet I’ll be signing up for the Paradox trilogy’s conclusion, “Heaven’s Queen”, ASAP.

Middle Book syndrome 7 mai 2014
Par J. Hamby - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I really enjoyed the first book. And I still enjoyed this second entry as well. The problem I had with this book is that it seemed to alternate a bit too much between straight up info dumping and treading water to maintain enough to carry over to another book. When the story just settles in and moves forward, it kicks in and simply works as a fantastic fun light but compelling read.

Having also read the third entry without giving any spoilers, I think this would have worked much better as two denser more complex books than with three.

Overall though as a part of the whole, this is well worth the reader's time and effort despite my rating of three stars for the work as a single entity. As part of the whole story, it is very necessary and worthwhile. As a volume that should, if not stand alone, still offer up value on its own, I feel it falters a bit.
