5.0 étoiles sur 5 NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND IN READING! 3 août 2006
Par Jeep Girl - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:CD|Achat vérifié
If your child can play a Gameboy or play games on the computer, they'll certainly breeze through this Hooked on Phonics: Master Reader program. I completed the original Hooked on Phonics levels 1-5 and needed more advanced reading training for my [...] son who struggles with large words, compound words, and most importantly, confidence within himself. This program is the answer for us! Although first looking at this program, I hesitated purchasing it because of the price, after trying other methods, I broke down and bought this program. Yes, it's an investment, but it's an investment with HUGE REWARDS, you won't mind the cost when you see your child making such quick headway with this product. Within 1 minute of opening the box, I slipped the CD in as instructed, clicked a few yeses and nexts to install, my son then sat down at the computer and completed level one. I was thrilled that there was plenty of overlap from the beginner program of basic reading as not to scare him off right off the bat. The graphics were bright, interesting to him, and completely user friendly to him. Looking at him, you'd have thought he was playing a cool video game! I sat next to him ready to help him, but the instructions were very clear and understandable for him, he didn't need me to help out. This is a completely independent program for your child to operate! This is what I notice most about this CD-ROM version is the freedom it allows the parents of struggling readers.

What you can expect starting the program:
STEP 1: child clicks on the star icon on their computer to begin program.
STEP 2: child signs in or selects his/her own name.
STEP 3: child clicks on the game board looking numbered level he/she is on, beginning with 1.
STEP 4: child plays word games on the computer with prompts at each step, doing what the computer says.
STEP 5: child pulls out the same numbered one page reading card.
STEP 6: child answers the questions at the bottom.
STEP 7: child places sticker on the progress poster on the number lesson they completed, that's it!
STEP 8: PARENTS NOTICE STICKERS AND MAKE KID FEEL LIKE HE'S THE STAR OF THE DAY!!!!!!!

Beginning the program, I particularly liked the way they display compound words, our struggling point. They showed a compound word on the screen, and instructed him to highlight the two little words within the one big word and then the computer lady would then repeat the words he'd selected, showing him the right division between words. I've worked with him on this for a year and haven't accomplished what the lesson 1 accomplished in 10 minutes! They do a brilliant job of showing concrete visuals that we were lacking in our reading study at home. The included reading book used later in the program resemble the look of the Leminy Snicket Series with Jim Cary. I can't say enough good about this program other than it's medicine for struggling readers. Our son was embarrassed that he couldn't read like everyone else, and that pained me, enough to afford this program and do something about it. This program is a must have for struggling readers, or beginner/advancing readers, and all schools! When the public school system let me down, I chose this method of success for my son, now he's a competitive reader with his class! I think all schools should have this available for their students, leave no child behind!

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not Compatible with MACs!!!! 10 novembre 2007

WARNING!!!!
If you only have Mac computers in your home and you do not have virtual machine software such as Parallels running Windows OS XP/2000 or later, you will not be able to use Hooked On Phonics Master Reader on your computer. That said...

This is a great product and I agree with prior reviewers' comments. However, only after we purchased the software did we realize that the CDs will only work with XP/2000 or later operating systems. Nowhere on the packaging does it list system requirements to warn the purchaser that the software only works on windows based operating systems. Only after I dug into technical support on HOP website did I find a statement saying Macs are not supported. Interesting that there is a software producer today ignoring the Mac community, especially considering the proliferation of Macs in the educational environment.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Cheaper at Wal-Mart! 16 septembre 2007

I want to start by saying this is a great product. I bought this for my 5-year-old after completing the Learn to Read program. These are excellent programs, and the added bonus of the computer games make it even more enjoyable for her.

I do, however, have one complaint. . . Thought I was getting a great deal, as I could not find elsewhere online for a better price (plus, shipping was only $4). However, I was at Wal-Mart a few days ago and saw the same set for $80! (Grrrr. . . ) The box looks a bit different on the outside, but the contents are identical. I wasn't able to find this set on Wal-Mart's website, but it is in stores. Check there first and save yourself close to $50!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Second in a three phase reading development program 26 septembre 2008
Par Steven Chandler - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
Hooked on Phonics is essentially a "decoding" program. Thus, students who complete the first five level program will have developed basic decoding skills (which is where many students are at the end of first grade). This is the second phase of the HOP reading development program. The HOP Master Reader program improves on the decoding skills via (1) software, (2) reading cards, and (3) four reading books. There are ten separate sections for each level each containing a software phase and reading card phase.

Software: The software helps increase a child's vocabulary via syllabic breakdown and word recognition. The first level (Blue level) starts out with mostly two syllables words expanding upon the rules a child learned in the HOP program and making more extensive use of those original rules learned in HOP. The introduction in word complexity increases gradually to words containing five to six syllables by the last (Red) level which is the fourth level. The software helps teach specific rules for various combinations of letters thus increasing analytic breakdown rather than just memorization by sight (i.e. hoping = long 'o' because of only one p vs. hopping = short 'o' because of two p's, etc.) (Note: As an aside, I found there to be several different examples of various rules regarding letter combinations which I was not even aware of.) Some of the sections will have only 20-30 words to be learned, while others have over 200 words. Thus, there is tremendous vocubalary development. This software runs on Vista although HOP will say it isn't Vista compatible. The only problem I found is that it doesn't retain the Child's records (past scoring history) after being closed out.

Reading Cards: These follow a successful completion of the software section. These are stories which start out at about 200 - 250 words in the blue level, and finish out at stories being about 400-500 words in length. Most are non-fiction stories regarding sports stars (i.e. Michael Jordan), animal life (dragon lizards), etc. which I found both educational and entertaining.

Reading books: A reading book accompanies the completion of each level. Thus, at the end of the first level, the child will be reading an 8 chapter book about a couple of kids who get into a time machine and find themselves back in old British times wondering how they return to their own time. I found my son saying "Stop, in the name of the King!" to my daughter and had to laugh.

Significance: This will dramatically improve a child's reading comfort level which, by the way is necessary for the third phase of the program ... test prep via the SRA Power Reader program. I highly recommend completing or at least getting deep into the master reader before migrating to the SRA Power Reader because children who don't have great comfort reading will not recall much of what they have read to be able to answer the test questions in the Power Reader cards. Moreover, they will not desire to re-read to figure out the correct answer to multiple choice questions because of a basic lack of reading comfort.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Hooked on Phonics Master Reader 7 mai 2007

I love the hooked on phonics reading program. The master reader is a great complement to the program and gives my children a way to do it on their own through the computer. I have twins and one will work on the computer while I use the other hooked on phonics program with the other child. Kids love the master reader program and learning through games. They also like to read the stories when they are done!
