Description de l'ouvrage

Scientific proof is the platform upon which an effective treatment plan is build. Without proof we are subjected to speculation and quackery. Reviewing articles from over 70 medical journals and medical texts, Dr. Haskell clearly explains the cause of Hashimotos. If you think that thyroid antibodies are attacking, inflaming and destroying your thyroid you have been brainwashed with misinformation. “Hashimotos is not the cause of thyroid inflammation, it is the result…” and to effectively treat Hashimotos and to reduce thyroid antibodies you must treat the cause which is thyroid inflammation. Illness doesn’t happen overnight. You don’t suddenly wake up one morning with Hashimotos. Every single disease develops in stages over years and even decades. Hashimotos is no different. In Hope For Hashimotos, Dr. Haskell describes in detail the step-by-step development of thyroid inflammation which leads to Hashimotos and “if we understand the origin of a disease and treat this origin, then the condition will recede, will reverse itself.” Yet with Hashimotos, this reversal can be challenging. Here’s the reason why. Most people with Hashimotos have not felt well for a long time, maybe 10-20 years. They’ve been to several physicians and even tried alternative medicine. But then one day someone finally does a blood test to find positive thyroid antibodies. Now they have the diagnosis of Hashimotos. They think this must explain the reason why they feel the way they do and they fall under the illusion that all their problems and symptoms are due to Hashimotos. In medicine we are blinded by linear thinking. Here is the diagnosis and here is the pill or supplement or psychological origin. I have Hashimotos. Give me anything to make it go away, and we grasp for straws. We want to believe in something, anyone who claims they know of a cure. People are desperately searching for something they haven’t been able to find. No wonder there are one million google searches for Hashimotos each and every day. And what are people searching for? They want to know why they have Hashimotos and what they can do because their physicians are ignorant and don’t have the answers. But unless you know the science and research behind Hashimotos you will gather a lot of misinformation and come in contact with a lot of quacks offering a single approach or product. And you fall into the trap of these wolves wanting something from you at your expense, often selling products that can do more harm than good. To treat Hashimotos, to reduce thyroid inflammation and thyroid antibodies, requires a broad approach using specific supplements, nutrition and often pharmacy. And even then, even when the person's thyroid inflammation is lowered, there are often other contributing factors causing symptoms unrelated to their thyroid antibodies. These can be low progesterone, low cortisol, poor gut ecology, a chronic infection such as chronic sinusitis, and many others. This is why it is an illusion for the person with Hashimotos to think that their feeling unwell is solely to the thyroid antibodies. This is often a difficult concept for people to acknowledge. Dr. Haskell’s book is evidence of an effective, holistic approach, incorporating the best from both alternative and orthodox medicine, the way we all chronic conditions should be handled. Every suggestion for the treatment of Hashimotos is broken down into 3 phases. It is an honest, science based, and practical account of how to treat Hashimotos by reducing thyroid inflammation. We suggest before you consider purchasing this book that you view a series of videos we've produced on the subject of Hashimotos. Biographie de l'auteur

Dr. Alexander Haskell is a graduate of The National College of Natural Medicine after completing his pre-med at San Francisco State University, and has been a licensed Naturopathic Physician for the last 27 years. A number of years ago his lectures on thyroid hormones given primarily to groups of women along the East Coast were met with great appreciation and enthusiasm yet a cry was often heard from the audience, a cry of frustration about their condition, Hashimotos. With great encouragement from his community and followers Dr. Haskell went to work. His research pulled articles from all over the world, many of them translated into English, to finally put the pieces together. He brought this research back into his clinic and put it into practice. "It worked. I mean I was kind of surprised, but then not surprised because all the steps required to reduce thyroid inflammation and thyroid antibodies made sense. But I must admit that every time I get a lab result back to see that a patient's antibodies are going down, I am still thrilled." We have produced a series of videos on Hashimotos which covers some of the same material from Dr. Haskell's book. Follow this link http://www.hopeforhashimotos.com/hashimotos-video-series/ "You helped me so much, right at a time, when I didn't know how to deal with my antibodies anymore! Thanks again!" Katrina M. "I am so impressed that I writing to let you know this is the best book on Thyroid that I have read in my 10 years of reading anything I can find about thyroid problems." Gail A. "Just want you to know how much both my husband and I appreciate the treatment that I am receiving from you; I had so much pain before we began, and it is such a relief to have most of it gone. Before, I could barely get in and out of the car, or even stand up after being seated. We both wondered if I was going to end up completely disabled! It seemed that there was no answer. I was so disheartened to have had all the faulty treatment from previous doctors, that I just didn't know where to turn. I had searched the internet diligently, but was unable to find anyone that seemed to know how to properly treat the thyroid, and also the treatment of other hormones. I knew there must be someone. I believe that God answered my prayers in directing me to your site." Debbie V. There are many others but we are running out of character space...

After reading other important books about thyroid illness, like Janie Bowthorpe's "Stop The Thyroid Madness" and Mary Shomon's books, I came across this title through the STTM European patient forum (NTHeurope).

Dr Haskell has researched thyroid, adrenal and breast disease very thoroughly and has spent decades working with Hashimoto patients. He combines patient experience with the most in depth and holistic study into the nature of this particular condition. His book offers a wealth of vital information about the cause, the particularities and most importantly the cure for Hashimoto's. He is very all-round and his approach is based on medical research as well as naturopatic knowledge. The advice he gives is very specific and the best I've read so far.

In this book, you will read about the workings of the hormonal system, about the relationship between thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction and breast disease, it will sum up what has been found in medical research and through experience with patients, and it will show the flaws of the standard treatment for thyroid conditions, it will also talk about other underlying causes like Candida and allergies, and it will give you information about diet and supplements. But most specifically: it is the only book I've found so far which gives a cure for Hashimoto's.

Most other books talk about Hashi's as a hypothyroid condition with and auto-immune angle, never explaining what exactly happens when you have Hashimoto's or how you can stop the auto-immune attack. Dr Haskell has found out some very specific things about the condition and he proposes a very specific approach to healing it. Bottom line: Hashimoto's should not be treated the way other thyroid disease is treated. For example: natural thyroid hormone and iodine supplements are actually bad for Hashimoto's. So is eating gluten.

I recommend watching the video's on his website, they contain most of the information of the book and are told in a very clear way:

[...]

After reading the book, I decided to start treatment with Dr Haskell, which is possible also long-distance, because no one else seemed as knowledgeable and no other doctor would actually help me to cure this disease. I am now a week into the treatment and already feeling better. But the treatment takes months, and it depends on your overall health and on other, underlying conditions when and if you will be cured. In my case, there is an underlying severe Candida problem which will take a while to be healed. But the consultations, the information I am getting and the long list of supplements, vitamins and hormones to take do inspire my confidence that I will get there.

If you have Hashimotos or are hypothyroid, I definitely recommend this book. I have read it and am very impressed with it for many reasons. Dr. Alexander Haskell does advocate using this information (which can be found in medical journals, I appreciate his citation) along with a physician. I went years going from doctors to endocrinologists not really getting the help or answers I needed. And I realize, it was because I wasn't looking myself.

Most endos see patients that have various problems, their focus is not thyroid diseases, therefore they don't take it upon themselves to update their practice of treating thyroid patients. I was so frustrated that I started reading medical journals on thyroid diseases and autoimmune diseases myself. I came across this book and was happy to find that Dr. Alexander Haskell uses information from many of the scientific studies I have read about. Face it, your endocrinologist is a person with a family, most likely over 35 and they are not researching on nights and weekends the newest and best thyroid approaches. Dr. Haskell has!

My antibodies (Anti-TG abs) just went up 100 points this past month, to a total of 603 IU/ml. I plan to start using Dr. Alexander Haskell's methods under the care of my endo and will report back here in 3 months.

It is an easy well written book. It reads as if he is speaking directly to you in a conversational way. I would also like him to write a book in a more textbook like fashion as well.
I will note, that as I started reading the book it led me to ask my endo for specific tests. ...tests that came back abnormal! My endo was interested and impressed that I asked for the tests, I told her I read this book and I am bringing it to my next appointment! I am taking control of my health with the help of this book, finally.

*There is a pdf that Dr. Alexander Haskell has made for physicians who are interested in the data he has found and studied.
*Dr. Alexander Haskell has videos on youtube! Check them out!

Thanks Dr. Alexander Haskell, you are really helping those with thyroid diseases!!!

Hello Fellow Hashimoto's Sufferers!
There's something that I want to share with you ... I was scammed, and I don't want this to happen to you!

As someone who lives with Hashimoto's disease, I have since done extensive medical research after being taken advantage of and mislead by this author/ `health practitioner'. I can confidently share how disturbing it is that Dr. Haskell can publish a book which arrogantly contradicts over 75 years of scientific research in the fields of immunology, endocrinology and neuroscience. I am not a doctor, nor do I work for the pharmaceutical industry nor do I have any other vested political or economic interests other than to express my concern for yet another alternative health approach that is no closer to addressing the root causes of Hashimoto's or proposing a safe treatment than what conventional medicine has to offer. It may even be a riskier one.

As most sufferers know, Hashimoto's is a complex autoimmune disease that has a genetic and environmental component. Scientists have located specific genes involved in Hashimoto's, and research continues to identify the broad range of environmental variables that can trigger a person's genetic predisposition to this disease including: pregnancy, smoking, drugs, age, gender, infection, irradiation as well as medical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, addison's disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, anorexia, bulimia and rheumatoid arthritis (Source: The etiology of autoimmune thyroid disease: a story of genes and environment. J Autoimmun. 2009 May-Jun; 32(3-4):231-9).

An autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto's occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy cells. Hashimoto's typically involves a slow but steady destruction of the gland that eventually results in the thyroid's inability to produce sufficient thyroid hormone -- the condition known as hypothyroidism. The basic molecular immunology of this autoimmune process has been researched extensively with established and consistent findings which I will not share here, but rather encourage you to read: [...].

Dr. Haskell blatantly ignores nearly a century of research which proves that the autoimmune disease (not `condition' as he refers to it) precedes the inflammation of the thyroid gland, not the other way around. Dr. Haskell's explanation of how the thyroid gland causes autoimmunity is based on a narrow interpretation of cherry-picked research studies that were clearly taken completely out of context.

The immune, endocrine (aka hormone-producing), nervous, circulatory and digestive systems are all part of a constant two-way interactive web where abnormalities in any one system can affect another. So while it's possible for a thyroid gland under attack by its immune system to have "counter' effects on its immune system (as Dr. Haskell points out), this in no way remotely proves as Dr. Haskell declares that a malfunctioning thyroid gland causes Hashimoto's. In reality, the disease is well underway by the time that thyroid hormone production has declined and thyroid inflammation may be present. Every alternative health practitioner that I've ever consulted with has acknowledged that Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease leading to a thyroid condition. So these comments are not directed against alternative medicine in general, but are specific to Dr. Haskell's views on Hashimoto's.

In North America, nearly 90% of all cases of primary hypothyroidism are caused by Hashimoto's. The remaining 10% of non-autoimmune hypothyroid conditions may be due to a number of different factors, including: radiation therapy to treat cancers of the head and neck, thyroid surgery and medications (e.g., lithium carbonate). Less often, non-autoimmune hypothyroidism may result from one of the following: a pituitary disorder, pregnancy and iodine deficiency. In some parts of the world, iodine deficiency is common, but the addition of iodine to table salt has virtually eliminated this problem in the United States.

Dr. Haskell strongly maintains that iodine deficiency is the main cause of hypothyroidism thereby leading to Hashimoto's. While it is absolutely true that the thyroid requires iodine to function, iodine deficiency is rare today in the Western world since the introduction of iodized salt in the 1920's. So, the entire premise for this book is based on the false assumption that North Americans are iodine deficient in their diet. It has actually been scientifically found that excess iodine (not deficiency) may be one contributing factor in triggering Hashimoto's disease. It would seem that Dr. Haskell's theory on thyroid iodine deficiency would have been perhaps more appropriate if we were living in the early 1900's or living outside of North America. But even then, his proposed treatment would be targeted at hypothyroidism which is a condition, and not Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune disease.

This book offers a most simple and tidy explanation for a rather complex disease that scientists continue to study and understand. It may be simple and tidy, but it is by no means accurate. I would re-title this book, "FALSE Hope for Hashimoto's" or even more accurately, "FALSE Hope for Hypothyroidism" as Dr. Haskell seems to use the two words interchangeably when they are very different.

The reason the distinction between what came first "the autoimmune disease or the thyroid disease" is important is because it dictates the prescribed course of treatment. Dr. Haskell's prescribed treatment does nothing to address the complexity of the autoimmune disease. This is an extremely misguided assumption, and is ironically what conventional medicine DOES do. It focuses on the thyroid, not the immune system. So Dr. Haskell is approaching this health issue in the same vein as conventional medicine except that he claims that he can get your thyroid functioning properly through mega vitamin/nutrient dosing rather than the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Mega vitamins and nutrients can have serious side effects too especially when used for longer periods of time.

The Internet is ripe with alternative practitioners who exploit the fact that modern medicine has not be able to come up with a cure, or even an effective means of treating Hashimoto's. There is no argument there! However, the reason that this is the case is because ALL autoimmune conditions are complex and caused my multiple factors. Just because conventional medicine has not been effective in treating this disease does not mean that alternative practitioners have found the solution either.

If Dr. Haskell has indeed unlocked the mystery to treating Hashimoto's as he claims no one else yet has, then why hasn't he had his results peer-reviewed and published in a reputable scientific journal? It could garner him added recognition and possible opportunities to conduct further research into other areas of interest. Curious indeed.

This book is predicated on the principles of orthomolecular medicine which in itself has a host of controversial and unproven claims. If you choose to purchase this book, I would approach it with an open and critical mind, and would encourage that you follow-up with leading edge scientific journals to see if what is stated in this book has any merit. Please do not trust my word. You will easily be able to discover this for yourself. The Journal of Autoimmunity and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism are good places to start.

This book is easy to read with all the information you need, although he sometimes started and stopped on topics. I've been doing about half the things he mentions based on my conversations with a naturopath. My doctor told me to wait it out and 'monitor' my TSH. Well, my naturopath had other ideas and I went completely gluten free and my antibodies have been dropping ever since. I'm going to speak with my naturopath about implementing some of the rest of his methods.

The one criticism I have is that he doesn't stress going gluten free enough. For me, this is the biggest change I made and it affected my cycle as well as my antibodies (increased from 24 days to 28 days after 20 years of 24 day cycles). It took a lot of change and commitment to GF, but I've got it down now. My TSH hasn't dropped that much (2.9 to 2.1) but it is in the right direction. Hopefully the rest of his suggestions help get that down, too. I did have a spike in my TSH to 3.72 right after Christmas when I ate more gluten than I thought on vacation and on purpose (I 'needed' those cookies) throughout the month. I hopped right back on the GF wagon and today my TSH was 2.23 again.

Lab results:
Date: 3/18/11, 7/18/11, 10/27/11, 2/14/11
Anti Thyroid Peroxidase AB: 46, 32, 31, 23 (Normal Range: 0-35)
Anti Thyroglobulin AB: 498, 263, 125, 95 (Normal Range: 0-40)
