5.0 étoiles sur 5 Probably the Best Contemporary Text on Horary 28 avril 2005
Par John Noodles - Publié sur
If I could keep only one book about horary astrology, it would be this one--actually, I prefer the earlier, fatter version of this book, in its pre-"Plain-and-Simple" incarnation, but it is no longer available. I own several horary books (Watters, Goldstein-Jacobson, Coley, Lilly, DeLong, Barclay, etc.), but this one distills the best of all of them.

Many books present solid, rather rigid, systems of horary interpretation. This isn't necessarily bad. DeLong's book, for example, provides methods that yield excellent results. Goldstein-Jacobson's method also presents a direct, rule-bound method that many people love--I find it a little restrictive. Dr. Louis' text, though, synthesizes a wide--and I mean WIDE--range of texts, tests different methods, and leaves the reader to experiment and find which methods work for him. This might seem overwhelming at first blush to a beginner, but it shouldn't, since the basics remain pretty much the same regardless whom you're reading. And, trust me, this book is much more accessible to the average reader than some of the bibles of horary (like Christian Astrology).

This book leans heavily towards traditional horary astrology, but does not ignore the outer planets as many traditional horary adherents tend to do. Also, different astrologers present different techniques for timing events, and locating lost objects, dicey endeavors at best; but Louis presents those methods and tests them with sample charts--and leave it to the reader to choose. He seems to be guiding the reader towards a deeper understanding of horary, one that will allow him to judge a chart based not just on a set of traditional rules, but on what the chart itself is suggesting, or emphasizing; charts are often ambiguous and difficult to read, and marrying yourself ideologically to a specific system can make them even more difficult, at least in my experience.

Louis references astrologers from the ancients through the present.

The book presents what is often confusing information & nomenclature in easily-understood language, using a chatty and anecdotal style. It's a pleasure to read, and a must-have reference for anyone interested in horary. If you want to learn horary, there is no better place to start.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An outstanding guide to the art of horary astrology 8 juin 1999

This has become one of my favorite astrology books since I began my studies a decade ago. Anthony Louis has done his homework and presents some difficult concepts in an easy and readable style. He gives plenty of examples to illustrate his points. The best feature of the book is the excitement and love of learning about astrology that runs through the whole text. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and I wish I could give it six stars.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good but some serious flaws 16 mars 2008

This is a very comprehensive and detailed work on horary astrology and certainly will demand and mostly reward a lot of study. It covers almost everything about horary, but is confusing and does not leave you feeling confident that horary is going to work. The confusion is because the author does not resolve the problems of using the traditional method with modern planets and aspects, and instead jumbles it all together, sometimes using one, sometimes the other, and suggesting that you need to find your own way. This suggestion does not suit this precise branch of astrology, and besides, horary works best when done the original way as experience usually shows. There are also numerous technical errors and contradictions and too many innovations - horary is demanding enough without having to invent extra complications. But the book is amazingly comprehensive and will still give you a lot of real and valuable information.

In summary, this book will serve if you can't get hold of the far superior Horary Textbook by John Frawley, and of course a study of Lilly's Christian Astrology will be challenging but pay off much more handsome dividends now that it is readily avialable.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A really good book 28 juillet 1999

This is not a book for beginners. You have to know some basic astrology to get into horary, but once you decide to learn it, this is the place to start. The author does an admirable job of making the minute rules and definitions of horary clear and understandable. His analogies and examples are outstanding. This is an excellent guide to horary, and it is hard to recommend it highly enough.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Far From Simple 26 septembre 2000

This is not a book for a novice. Mr. Louis has a niche for writing technical jargon in a non-complex manner, but without having the basics down, the reader will most likely feel like a fish out of water. Horary astrology is much more complex and I feel forced to argue the title of "plain and simple" as I did not find anything simple at all about horary astrology. I must admit though, that Mr. Louis made it seem less like a whole new learning practise and more like the extension of astrology that it should be.
