Présentation de l'éditeur

A killer is mutilating bodies in Los Angeles. Agent Cèsar Hawke is on the case, but the murderer is ahead of him—way ahead of him.

Wiping the memories of the dead so that the team’s necrocognitive can’t talk to them? Done. Preventing magical reconstruction of the crime scenes? Oh yeah. And the murders keep getting more brutal while Cèsar struggles to catch up.

The best way to heat up a cold case is to go to Helltown, where Los Angeles’s most powerful evil hides out, but even those demons are afraid of the murderer. Their fear adds one more question to the growing pile of unknowns:

What kind of bad guy is too hot for Helltown?

Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.

If you would like to know the instant I have a new book available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a WICKED cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out --

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Reading the Paranormal Review 26 juin 2014

Good gravy, I adore the world S.M. Reine has created with this series. I love the way everything is interconnected and that the bad guys aren't always black and white. And that BIG THINGS happen that tie into the Descent and Ascension series. *swoon*

Cèsar. Oh, Cèsar. He might not be the best witch in the world, but he has buckets of luck on his side and he seems to know all the right people. Or the wrong people. You know, depending on what side of Helltown he's standing in.

As it turns out, Cèsar isn't quite as bad at that witchy thing as he thinks. He just does things a little more unconventionally than his fellow witches. That includes tromping into Helltown and trusting a woman who can get answers from the dead. Or maybe I mean lusting over. Heh. I like when Cèsar loses his higher brain functions around Isobel.

Bottom line: This here is one badass series that just keeps getting better. S.M. Reine never fails to entertain and I sort of love seeing the other side of OPA.

SM Reine is an amazing writer with an avid imagination. I always love her cover designs. I am always amazed at how quickly she can put together such well written books! Each book in this series grabs you and draws you in. It has great characters like Cesar (not so great at being a witch- who ever heard of a witch that was allergic to magic!), Suzy (who is always covering Cesar's butt), and Isobel (the "death witch"). If you love books about witches and demons you will love this series. SM Reine is yet to let me down with any of her writing. I have been hooked since I read Descent. If you haven't read her other works yet I strongly recommend you do so!

I love SM Reine and I really love Cesar. Cesar is a witch who works for a preternatural organization that keeps us humans safe. Cesar hates bodies and he has to endure some bad ones as there is a serial killer on the loose. Of course it is not just any serial killer but a supernatural one. It give him an opportunity to once again hookup with Izzy who can raise the spirits of the dead. Fans of Reine's books will love the cameo appearances of characters from her other series. This series takes place before the Descent series which makes me wonder how this gang fares when the breaking occurs?? But whether you read her other books or not this series is a fun time.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Creative Deeds Reads Review 3 juillet 2014

I received Hotter than Helltown in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I honestly can't explain it. I love everything about this world that S.M. Reine has created. I fell in love with her unique take on werewolves in Seasons of the Moon. I love the rough edge to the characters in the Descent series. The Ascension series knit the characters of both these series together brilliantly. The Preternatural Affairs series is yet another layer (or pre-layer really) of the same world. As much as I love Rylie, Seth, Abel, Elise, James and everyone else in this crazy, mixed-up world, if I had to choose right now, Cèsar would be my hands down favorite.

Hotter Than Helltown finds Cèsar stressing over more than just the magical crimes that he has to investigate. He also has an impossible test to pass that he is totally not ready for. The case that he's on becomes as much of a diversion as it is a challenge.

I think what I liked most about Hotter Than Helltown was the fact that readers got to know characters a lot better. At least it felt that way to me. For some reason, in the previous books I didn't really feel connected to Fritz. I didn't dislike him, I just didn't know how to feel about him I guess. His interactions with Cèsar in Hotter Than Helltown changed that for me I think. There's a lot of things about being inside Cèsar's head that change my perspective.

Some of the other things that I've liked about this series so far are the vague references to characters that we already know from the previous series. One character in particular was mentioned in passing and if I wasn't paying attention I might have missed it. It kinda made me chuckle.

Basically, these books keep you on your toes - in more ways than one. The characters are smart, witty and the interactions between them are more of the same. There's action, danger, mystery and the world building never ceases to amaze me. There's definitely more in store for these characters and I have a feeling that there will be even more cross overs, which is fine by me. I can't wait to see what layers are added next.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books are such quick and fun reads that I wish I had more to devour at once! Cesar's sarcastic and hilarious inner monologue is one of my favorite parts of this series and keeps me coming back for more. While these books take place in the same universe as the rest, they are definitely a solid stand alone read.

Cesar is still straddling the line at his new job. He's trying his best to mess up his deal to become Aspis to Fritz, while still appearing to give it his best shot. He's working for a company that has pretty much assured him they will eventually be the cause of his death. He's also flirting with his boss's ex (almost) fiancee. All these things will certainly lead to no good in the long run, but in the short period of time that this book covers, it makes for really entertaining antics. We are introduced to angels in this set of books (finally), and they are just as wrong as they were in the Elise stories. If you find these things offesive, you are in the wrong place. I am absolutely in love with the twisted and wonderful world that the author has painted, and continue to love it in this new format. Just when you think you have things figured out, there is always a curveball that causes my jaw to drop and flips my understanding upside down.

Poor Cesar doesn't get much in the way of romantic action, but there is all sorts of buildup for misunderstandings and horrible situations to happen in future installments. These stories are gritty, entertaining, hilarious, and so interesting! I can honestly say that there is nothing out there like a book from this author. From writing style to unique world building, you just can't really compare any other books out there to these. If you haven't checked out this series, or any related books, you are missing out on something truly special.
