A killer is mutilating bodies in Los Angeles. Agent Cèsar Hawke is on the case, but the murderer is ahead of him--way ahead of him.
Wiping the memories of the dead so that the team's necrocognitive can't talk to them? Done. Preventing magical reconstruction of the crime scenes? Oh yeah. And the murders keep getting more brutal while Cèsar struggles to catch up.
The best way to heat up a cold case is to go to Helltown, where Los Angeles's most powerful evil hides out, but even those demons are afraid of the murderer. Their fear adds one more question to the growing pile of unknowns:
What kind of bad guy is too hot for Helltown?

Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.

If you would like to know the instant I have a new book available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a WICKED cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out --

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Reading the Paranormal Review 26 juin 2014

Good gravy, I adore the world S.M. Reine has created with this series. I love the way everything is interconnected and that the bad guys aren't always black and white. And that BIG THINGS happen that tie into the Descent and Ascension series. *swoon*

Cèsar. Oh, Cèsar. He might not be the best witch in the world, but he has buckets of luck on his side and he seems to know all the right people. Or the wrong people. You know, depending on what side of Helltown he's standing in.

As it turns out, Cèsar isn't quite as bad at that witchy thing as he thinks. He just does things a little more unconventionally than his fellow witches. That includes tromping into Helltown and trusting a woman who can get answers from the dead. Or maybe I mean lusting over. Heh. I like when Cèsar loses his higher brain functions around Isobel.

Bottom line: This here is one badass series that just keeps getting better. S.M. Reine never fails to entertain and I sort of love seeing the other side of OPA.

This novel is the third in the Preternatural Affairs series. I read a lot of urban fantasy so jumping into an established series is not normally a problem for me and this one certainly gave me no trouble with understanding the premise and the characters. I just didn't enjoy the book enough to continue with the series or catch up on what came before. The magic involved is pretty much paper thin with a main character that doesn't seem to know a whole lot about how to manipulate that magic. Does he even know what he is capable of doing? It certainly didn't seem like he did and his utilization of magic during the big climactic event left me thinking it had happened more by accident or luck than intent.

Cesar Hawke is the main character in this novel and yet he felt like the weakest of all the characters that surround him. He definitely did not seem like an alpha male in personality type or in magical ability. Cesar remained weak for me, the one who had to be given help with magic he needed to perform. I also had trouble picturing him as a man in my thoughts and only when it was necessary for him to rely on physical muscularity did his masculinity seem as if it really played a prominent role while Cesar's boss, Fritz Friederling, had strong male gender characterization. Even Helltown was a disappointment since the location appeared to me to be under-utilized as a frightening location and too close to normal during a lot of the action.

I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

SM Reine is an amazing writer with an avid imagination. I always love her cover designs. I am always amazed at how quickly she can put together such well written books! Each book in this series grabs you and draws you in. It has great characters like Cesar (not so great at being a witch- who ever heard of a witch that was allergic to magic!), Suzy (who is always covering Cesar's butt), and Isobel (the "death witch"). If you love books about witches and demons you will love this series. SM Reine is yet to let me down with any of her writing. I have been hooked since I read Descent. If you haven't read her other works yet I strongly recommend you do so!

I love SM Reine and I really love Cesar. Cesar is a witch who works for a preternatural organization that keeps us humans safe. Cesar hates bodies and he has to endure some bad ones as there is a serial killer on the loose. Of course it is not just any serial killer but a supernatural one. It give him an opportunity to once again hookup with Izzy who can raise the spirits of the dead. Fans of Reine's books will love the cameo appearances of characters from her other series. This series takes place before the Descent series which makes me wonder how this gang fares when the breaking occurs?? But whether you read her other books or not this series is a fun time.

Ah! César and friends are back again – and this time, his murder case may just kill him. That is, if his boss doesn’t kill him first. After the action in the second in the Preternatural Affairs series, Silver Bullet, César is in big trouble. He used a cell phone he shouldn’t have, and the VP of the Office of Preternatural Affairs is out for César’s guts – literally. And if César doesn’t pass his Aspis exam, to become Shield to Director Fritz Friederling, she just might have said guts for garters.

Could things get worse? Well, sure they can! For there is a vicious demon on the loose, a demon strong enough to kill a Kopis by simply being in the area. With more bodies dropping, all brutally savaged, the race is on as César, his partner Suzy, Isobel the necrocognitive, and Fritz all scramble to find the demon. A demon who may be unkillable.

As always, Reine does a wonderful job of writing a tight narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat, using a level of creativity that I truly admire. There is terror and blood, but also a great deal of subtle humor in Reine’s works. I enjoyed the first two in the series, and can hardly wait for Sara’s next César book!

Highly recommended. If you haven’t read the first two, I would suggest reading them first. They are really good books, but if you haven’t read them, you can catch up easily enough in this volume. However, it won’t be nearly as much fun!

I received Hotter Than Helltown from the publisher in return for a realistic review. All thoughts are my own.
