A short book that is to the point. Gives you an overview of the moral obligation you have when fighting but does not harp on it. The moves are easy to learn and great for a woman who is not particularly strong or in shape and yes, you can kick some butt in 3 seconds or less. Buy this book ladies, its a great one. After scoffing at my new found skills, I took my navy Senior chief husband to the floor before he could wipe the smile from his face, and I wasnt even trying full force! (And yes, the element of suprise is part of the training so I did not "cheat", there is no "cheating" when it comes to life or death).

Lots of useful tips that you can easily incorporate into your life. I like how the author also takes the time to focus on things you can do to get out of a situation and not make one worse. One of these is passive body projection... i.e. helping to project the impression that you are not a threat. Also helpful to be able to identify someone who intends to do harm. Very useful book that I'm reviewing with my older children and taking the time to practice what I read becuase I'm out in public a lot during trhe day.

This book covers everything from the basic legal considerations of self-defense to the extremely uncool, yet eminently practical advice to avoid conflict wherever possible. Where the book does cover self-defense techniques and movements, it has fantastic explanations and lots of great illustrating photos.

The formatting makes the book extremely easy to read with lots of bolded, italicized, and bulleted text to show you the important stuff in a glance. Highly recommended!

As anyone reading this knows there are a lot of self-defense books out there and many are kindle books. Many of them are good, some are very good. But most of them share a basic flaw: you can be trained to the teeth in the martial arts and still find that your brain goes into reboot mode when you're actually attacked. I have been studying martial arts since I was 10 years old but that couldn't, or at least didn't save me from being knifed in the back and nearly dying years ago. This book approaches self-defense from the standpoint of a clear understanding of our own human nature and our own instinctive responses to danger. It is incredibly detailed for a short book and offers very simple, very easily followed directions on how to change your attitude toward aggressive encounters and how to develop a nearly instinctive, safe, legal response to attack. I'm not saying don't try to improve yourself in the martial arts. I've been doing that for nearly forty years. But this wonderful book should be the very first thing you read if you have any concerns about defending yourself in the real world where the knives are not made out of rubber and the swords aren't made out of wood. Chances are you're going to stumble into something someday. And that fight or attack will be over very quickly. This book can show you how to respond in a fraction of a second with an effective and legal defense. I cannot think of another book, other than "The Fence" that is as practically useful as this gem. Thanks, Phil We all owe you for this one.

Practical and "non-Hollywood" real.
This book is especially good for the untrained person who wants to defend himself/herself without having to dedicate years of practice in a martial art. It's also good for the old-guy martial artists like me who still would rather kick ass. At my age that ain't practical. A hit-and-run strategy makes more sense and is still honorable.

The book covers what to do and how to do it simply and successfully if you're ever attacked by unsavory types. I learned how to fight when I was in high school to deal with the bullies and gang bangers. Scrapping is something I understand; nevertheless, as an "aging martial artist", standing toe-to-toe doesn't make sense--healing takes too long these days. There are more desirable alternatives. And for those who don't know how to fight, the advice given is solid and natural.

It's a good and helpful read.
