A very useful book (lot of examples, quality of the drawing, ...) in order to progress. However, I will have appreciated some information concerning shading. Nevertheless, I do highly recommend this book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly recommended indispensable drawing guide 28 novembre 2013
Par Parka - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
Concept designer and educator Scott Robertson has finally come up with his own book on how to draw, after teaching that to students for years. It's wonderful to finally have a book from him that we can learn from directly.

This is a book for artists, architects and designers.

The focus of the book is on perspective, and learning to draw from imagination. There are a lot of step by step instructions. Just copy them and the lesson points will sink in as you practice.

The information is technical, but explained concisely. There are even videos online that goes through the main lesson points again for even more clarity.

Perspective fundamentals are covered comprehensively, and subsequent chapters build on that knowledge to draw subjects of different form, environments, vehicles and aircrafts.

You'll learn stuff like the usual 1-2-3 point perspectives, vanishing points, and also additional bits on cutaways, exploded views, ultra wide angles and more. There are lots of drawing tips.

Compared to other perspective books, examples here are more challenging and stylish, such as cars, planes. curved bodies, instead of the usual houses, railway tracks vanishing to a point. There are plenty of illustrated examples.

One part I like is where he shows off drawing as if they were taken from camera lens at different focal length. The difference in effect is quite stunning and can make a drawing look either dull or dynamic. Throughout the book, he emphasises on using grids and you'll be able to see immediate effects on how that affects the look of your drawing.

There's nothing on drawing shadows though. But if you look at his illustrated examples, you'll see that even without shadows, you can make out the form and shapes of the objects perfectly.

The last section briefly covers several sketching styles and mediums. You can experiment with different styles to suit yourself or the drawing.

Here's the list of chapters included to give you an idea what to expect.

Drawing Materials and Skills
Perspective Terminology
Perspective Drawing Techniques
Creating Grids
Elipses and Rotations
Working with Volume
Drawing Environments
Drawing Aircraft
Drawing Wheeled Vehicles
Sketching Styles and Medium
By the way, he is also the founder of Design Studio Press and has overseen the publication of many DSP artbooks. Some of those artbooks are actually student projects and you can see what's actually possible when you master the fundamentals taught in this book.

Mine's the paperback edition and the binding seems good enough. There's also the hardcover edition available.

This is a highly recommended indispensable drawing guide.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A comprehensive and practical guide with great bonus video content 26 novembre 2013
Par Daiz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché|Achat vérifié
I've been waiting for this book to come out for months and got it in the mail today. I'm happy to say that I am very impressed. This book is an indispensable item for those who need to learn perspective (especially if you don't go to art center or have access to this type of perspective teaching). It's comprehensive but not technically loaded and provides clear step by step instructions. It's more like a distillation of the most effective techniques to learn perspective geared towards drawing. I think with this book alone, it is possible for someone to reach proficiency in drawing things in perspective (provided that they heavily practice the exercises in the book). The additional 5 hours worth of video content is a great companion to see in video how some of the images are constructed. Highly recommended!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic Primer on Perspective Drawing. 4 décembre 2013
Par Jason Cox - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché|Achat vérifié
This is a fantastic reference for anyone who desires to learn the basics of sketching in perspective. Perspective drawing is the key focus on this book, but it also does a good job at showing how perspective in your drawing compares to scenes in reality.

There are other books out there that teach things that are shown well in this book, but the thing that I think makes this one unique is that it brings so many different aspects of perspective, sketching, and object design together in one place. And while it doesn't include every technique available to a designer or artist, this explains a tremendous toolset that you'll be able to use (very quickly!) to produce most anything you can imagine. Isn't that the goal?

The quality of the book is fantastic (I got the "paperback" version) with some of the thickest paper of any book I own. Each page is in full color (most publishers would have cut corners as many of the images only include spots of color and the temptation to make it greyscale had to be high).

Also included is a link list to video lessons. There is an upcoming app that will allow you to scan images from many of the pages to trigger the videos, but it's not yet available on iOS or Google Play store (at least it didn't show up as linked from the QR code and separate searches). The link list works with your computer or a tablet. I'll update this review when the app becomes available.

If you are unfamiliar with Scott Robertson, I highly recommend searching for him in YouTube. I've been following him for years and have 7 of his drawing, rendering, and designing DVDs from the Gnomon workshop. This book and the videos is a nice companion to those, but much less expensive! (Those DVDs were $30 each). Even with that background, I'm very happy with Scott's latest book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 This book is something special 27 novembre 2013

The amount of care and love that the authors lavished on this book is immediately apparent. I have probably 20 books on drawing and an art degree. This is the best book you can buy on drawing, there's a lot in here that you won't get anywhere else. This should be the textbook for every college level drawing class. If you're looking for a book on drawing do yourself a favor and get this one.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great beginning to the series 10 décembre 2013
Par K. J. Brett - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Relié|Achat vérifié
I say great beginning because this is the first of three books planned by Scott Robertson in this series. I believe the next books are entitled "How to Render" and "How to Design" and I estimate they will be available by Q2 2014 and Q1 2015 respectively. I purchased the hardcover copy. The quality of the book is first rate. (I compare it with two hardcover books I have by Koos Eissen Sketching (12th printing): Drawing Techniques for Product Designers and Sketching: The Basics (2nd printing). I also own Mr. Robertson's Gnomon workshop DVD on Basic Perspective Form and How to Draw Cars the Hot Wheels Way 1st (first) Edition by Robertson, Scott (2003). This book compliments if not parallels some of the information presented there.) In addition to the meticulous presentation of materials, this book also contains several hours of additional video tutorials (via smart device app or internet site) to engage the reader and stimulate the creative parts of your brain. If you have an interest in learning industrial design or want to get an insight to Scott's methodology I give this book my highest recommendation. For parents and teachers, this book should be a must have for any high school freshman, sophomore, junior or senior who intends on continuing their education at an accredited college. Bottom line; You will not regret this purchase.
