Biographie de l'auteur

With a strong history of large scale farming on both sides of the family, Ray French graduated with a degree in Agriculture specializing in Nursery Crop Production and Botany from Auburn University. Upon graduation, Ray ran some of the largest commercial growers in the country. He is now a consultant for a large home improvement retailer and travels all over the world in search of new plants. Once the potential plants are discovered, he works with growers to produce them and the retailer to market them. Ray has been an integral part of introducing many of the most popular plants in the market today such as the Knockout Rose, Encore Azaleas, and SunPatiens.

not much useful information at all 23 janvier 2013

I grabbed this book for a little advice on how to cure my tobacco- and that's about all that I got. The author goes on at length about starting and growing the plant and even a good deal of information about how to prepare your seed bed all after he explains that 'if you can grow a tomato you can grow tobacco.' Well, I sure as heck can grow a tomato- so that part of the book was useless to me. In the section where he treats with what he calls 'the art' of curing tobacco he writes so vaguely as to make me wonder if, in fact, he has ever done it. At several points in that chapter he directs the reader to look at youtube videos of various processes- making me very glad that I spent money on his book, I would NEVER in a million years thought of doing that on my own. In all, this book was waste of time and money- no plans for tobacco drying structures, no temperatures or dryness guidelines and one, lonely, sentence about how to tell when your leaf is ripe. Very disappointing.

OK about tobacco growing 23 juin 2013

I expected a lot from this book, as I struggle with growing and curing the good stuff in a cold climate and without any guidance. It did not quite meet my expectations; it seems to be the personal tale of one single enthusiast, giving OK advice, but I still feel I need more. So it is not 'the only book you need' on the topic.

Practical and Interesting 21 janvier 2012

I bought this book originally as a gift for my mother(aiming to lessen her bad habit) Out of curiosity, I ended up reading the book front to back and I was amazed at the amount of historical content contained within. This book gives a healthier alternative to a common issue but also sheds light to a subjet that generally gets pushed into a corner. This book was an absolutely fascinating read and I strongly recommend it to smokers and non-smokers alike.

Interesting and Informative! 8 mai 2012

First my disclaimer...I'm a non-smoker and always have been. My interest in growing tobacco began because the fragrance and beauty of some of the flowers combined with the natural pesticide features in the garden.

Now, having said that, finding information on growing tobacco can be frustrating given the general hysteria surrounding tobacco related products. Heck, just finding the plants was all but impossible in my local area. Fortunately, it's easy enough to locate the seeds and after buying this book plus "The Culivators Handbook", I learned how easy it is to grow your own tobacco..for whatever purpose you might have in mind.

The cultivators handbook is another terrific tobacco book but oriented more toward philosophical and historical accounts...I think this does a better job on the actual growing segment. Additionally, the other book makes use of traditional fertilizers and other chemicals while this places a strong emphasis on organic alternatives which I like and use in my own garden (hence the interest in pesticide potential of the plant).

This is a quick read, very well written and well worth the price paid.

Very useful book. Lays out all the basics and the extra details in an easy to read and easy to understand format. Requires almost no attention span and will help you find answers to all your basic tobacco questions related to growing it.
