And he will not. Ever

With a bizarre marriage of convenience in place, the lives of both Edie and Stuart seem to unfold as they both wish. Then Stuart, after being severely injured, returns to England. This is trauma all over again for Edie who still suffers from a brutal episode in her past and is terrified of men.

Stuart has no knowledge of Edie's on-going anguish and thinks they will court a little and embark on a normal, pleasant marriage. Edie is panicked and adamantly refuses any such notion.

Then follows gentle wooing by Stuart amid wit and banter between them. He'd lob one; she'd smash it back. When Stuart eventually learns the basis of Edie's fears, his wooing of Edie is no longer simply sweet and gentle. It becomes profoundly moving. (This is where I began seriously hitting the box of tissues and I just don't do that!)

This is an exquisite love story. I am not a weeper. I *never* cry when reading. But this was such a deeply affecting experience I had to dry my eyes a few times.

Ms. Guhrke doesn't hesitate to take on difficult issues and she does it with grace, sensitivity and a deep understanding of the topic at hand. Her The Marriage Bed (Guilty Series) remains one of my favorites.

To see Edie during Stuart's 5-year hiatus, I heartily recommend When The Marquess Met His Match: An American Heiress in London. You will also meet some of the characters appearing in this book.

I don't know how in the world Laura Lee Guhrke can possibly surpass the genius of this novel, but I'm ready! :)

When I ordered this book, I barely remembered who Laura Lee Guhrke was. I knew I had read at least one of her books because the name was familiar. The title of this book didn't impress me at all - I thought it would be one of those light, easily forgotten books that I read for mental oblivion. Wow, was I surprised and impressed.

This was a very well-written story about Stuart, Duke of Margrave, who has inherited vast estates without any funds to properly care for them and Edie, an American heiress, who left America due to a scandal, then traveled to London at her father's behest in order to find a husband. Edie's wealthy father plans to take Edie back to America as soon as the Season ends but she can't stomach the thought of returning and facing the man who ruined her. When she learns that Stuart has spent years in Africa and wants nothing more than to return there and continue his explorations, she is courageous enough to propose a marriage of convenience, whereby he may return to Africa and she will take over the care of his estates. But... he must agree to never come back, the marriage will not be consummated and everyone will live happily ever after. Yes, indeed.

This arrangement suits both parties for five long years until Stuart is injured and nearly dies in the bush of Africa. During which time, Stuart has an epiphany and literally feels the "call" so to speak to go home and take up his life with Edie. When he returns home, Edie's enjoyable, comfortable, safe life is totally unsettled. Although she is a strong person in nearly every way, she is emotionally terrified when she realizes Stuart wants to have a real marriage but very reluctantly agrees to give him ten days to change her mind. If, after the ten day period is up, she hasn't willingly kissed him, he will not continue to press her towards a real marriage.

As portrayed by Ms. Guhrke, Stuart will forever be one of the standout heroes in this genre - at least in my mind. He is patient, kind, determined to have Edie accept him as a real husband in every way. The ten days become a real test for Stuart who must find a way to get past the strong defenses Edie has put in place due to her hurtful past. Stuart begins to re-train Edie much as one would attempt to gentle a horse who was improperly broken. Indeed, Edie may have been wounded but she has retained her warm heart. Under Stuart's gentle tutelage, her wounded soul begins to heal. I was a little dumbfounded by what I found between these pages. A warm, gentle, lovely romance.

*One Spoiler* I think it's possible that there is one section that may cause Ms. Guhrke difficulties with some readers. When Edie questioned Stuart about whether or not he had other women during the five years they were apart, he responded that when things got desperate, he would travel to Paris. Hello? He would travel to Paris from Kenya when he got desperate for sex - "because it was easier - it was easier to get condoms and the Paris women... well, it was just easier..." Um.. that would have been around 4,000 miles from Nairobi to Paris "as the crow flies" - desperate indeed.

Par Anna (Bobs Her Hair) aka 'nanners' - Publié sur Amazon.com

Ruined American heiress Edie Jewell flees to England hoping to find a suitable aristocratic husband. She knows exactly what she wants or - to be more precise - what she doesn’t want in a marriage. Edie’s almost out of time. She’s desperate. Returning to New York would be unbearable. Her matchmaker has been unsuccessful. What Edie wants in a husband seems impossible to find. Then, across a crowded ballroom, she sees her way out of hell.

Adventure-seeking Stuart is a duke. He’s penniless too. (It’s kismet!) The Duke of Margrave possesses reckless good looks and charm aplenty. Weighted down by debt and spendthrift relatives - desperately longing to continue his travels in Africa - he responsibly carries out his role as duke. Stuart dutifully attends a ball; unfortunately, it’s a dull event. Until, across a crowded ballroom, he sees the most intriguing girl he’s ever met.

Then, Stuart and Edie marry. They go their separate ways. He goes to Africa. Edie becomes the perfect duchess, lonely and safe. Five years and a lion attack later is where fate reunites them and their love story begins.

If you’ve ever felt that zing, lightning strike, or spark when meeting someone special – if you can remember what the clothes that person wore or the music that was playing in the background or the specific thoughts and feelings they invoked in you - you’ll adore the way this story’s hero engages his heroine. Stuart sees Edie’s beauty. He needs her love. He shares himself willingly. Don’t assume the title ”How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days” indicates a light romantic historical. Developing a memorable romantic couple is primary. The ‘ten days’ is not the timeframe of the book, so be at ease that nothing is forced in the characters or plot.

From across a crowded ballroom, Stuart sees Edie and she’s imprinted on his soul. Oh, Stuart! That all men should have a way with words. The fortress around Edie’s heart never stood a chance against him. Stuart is sensitive, but he also possesses a quick wit, keen intellect, strong will, and steadfast heart. Edie’s issues stemming from events of the oft-mentioned 'Saratoga' resolves in a very rewarding manner. Stuart helps her move forward. Edie gets her power back. Vulnerable revelations and sensual imagery mark the beginning of Stuart’s bid to win his wife’s love and respect. Happenstance leads two good people to find something valuable they deeply needed when they were not looking for it. Their meeting of the eyes was definitely a serendipitous moment.

”How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days” is a poignant historical romance and another beautifully crafted book by Laura Lee Guhrke. It’s a delicious seduction of the senses and an endearing love story. (Keep some tissues handy!) It was such a rewarding read that one can only hope that Ms. Guhrke continues the American Heiress in London series; perhaps, matchmaking other ‘Eton men.’

It's as if all Guhrke's previous stories were just practice leading up to this one. Up to now, I'd thought her best work was And Then He Kissed Her, but this new one is, I believe, The Guhrke Romance to which anything she writes in future will be compared. Heck, it's not often I get teary-eyed or choked up when reading an HR (usually I'm just choking with exasperation) but there are moments in this love story that are as near to perfect as you can find.

The basic premise of a marriage of convenience, with non-consummation or only perfunctory consummation, followed immediately by a very lengthy separation, has been done time and again by many HR authors. Eloisa James has done maybe 5, a new Miranda Neville soon to be released has this trope, and there are many other lesser authors who have used the same theme, but Guhrke's is truly the best I've read.

There's a spin on the theme here, in that our heroine has had a traumatic event pre-marriage which causes more estrangement than the usual "he left me, now he'll have to prove he's worthy of having me". No, in this one heroine Evie demands to be left and to be left forever as part of the marital agreement and is appalled and even terrified when she finds that husband Stuart has returned to stay.

Hero Stuart had agreed to her pre-marital terms, needing rich American heiress Evie's monies for his estates and wanting his freedom to explore Africa, but he had always had the thought in the back of his mind that her terms would eventually be negotiable and they'd settle down to make an heir or two one day.

Returning to England after 5 years because of a serious injury, Stuart is truly in the dark about Evie's private anguish and so is totally puzzled by her adamant refusal to even consider that they live together as man and wife. Halfway into the story, he finally realizes what her trauma is, and oh what a wonderfully touching love story this becomes!

This is a romance devoid of exasperating contrived behavior or ridiculous lack of communication. Evie's reticence to talk about her issue is fully understandable. It's a book also lacking in any boorish behavior on the part of the hero. Stuart may very well be the most patient, understanding and romantic hero I've met in a romance. And the secondary characters? Very well done, from the heroine's younger sister Joanna down to domestics in the household.

OK. I'm done gushing now. (But I really, really liked this.)

A well crafted book about a woman desperate for an escape from America into her new life as a duchess. It was the perfect plan Edie had devised in which a man in debt up to his eyeballs could not turn down. Stuart, the new Duke, had no desire to play the role and had dreams of traveling to Africa and staying there. Five years is a long time and it is than that the estranged pair reunite and after a brush with death Stuart has new plans for his wife. Will she give in though that's the question?

Nothing that a little friendly challenge can't solve and so the two lay down a bet that will take 10 days to reach that solution. It was very touching to see how compassionate Stuart was towards Edie's fear. To live in a foreign land and come out ahead of the game was so brave but Edie had worse fears at her doorstep back in New York and so she moved across the Pacific to live a new life and discovered that it wasn't just new surroundings she needed.
