Présentation de l'éditeur

How to Make a Noise: iPad Synthesizers Edition looks at how to create and control sounds using iPad synthesizers. The book introduces sound creation from first principles focusing on each element in turn: sound sources, filters, envelopes, low frequency oscillators and other modulation sources, FX, frequency modulation synthesis, and brings the pieces together as you begin to create and control your own sounds. It illustrates each aspect with examples using five synthesizers available for the iPad: BassLine, ReBirth, iELECTRIBE, iMS-20, and NLogSynth Pro.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Concepts vs. products; synthesizers not samplers 20 mai 2011

1. This is an abridgement of the author's much-longer book How To Make A Noise (which you can purchase in print, or download as a free PDF from the author's website). Why would you spend money to get a shorter version of something you can get the full version of for free? I can think of three reasons. First, the full version can be overwhelming. Second, the full version refers to features and products that aren't available on the iPad; that information's not useless, but (again) it can be overwhelming. Third, because the abridged version is specifically targeted to products for the iPad, you can get to work sooner.

2. This book does a good job balancing general concepts (e.g., how filters work) and specific applications (how to synthesize drum sounds). It doesn't rewrite the product manuals, and the recipes that it gives for particular sounds are general. You still have to think, and you still have to experiment. Does that mean it's just trial and error? No: this book will help you to focus your experiments, and suggest some directions that you might not have thought of.

3. This book only costs $3. If you want more, you can always purchase or download the original book. The author also has a free "Synthesizer Bootcamp" series on YouTube; this has some overlap with the book, but that's useful, because you can hear what you're reading about.

4. More screenshots would be welcome, and since they don't add to the production cost, why not?

5. Not all of the products featured in this book are featured equally. As you would expect, the products that come up most frequently are also the most powerful: specifically, NLogSynth Pro and Korg iMS-20. The one, big product that seems to be missing here is NanoStudio. But ultimately this book is more about concepts than products. If you learn the concepts for one of the other synths, you can apply them to NanoStudio (or SunVox, or Jasuto, or what have you). Other products that seem to be missing are Beatmaker and Xewton Music Studio; but those are samplers, not synthesizers, and this is a book about synthesizers.

The iPad has made so many incredible synthesizers available and, while it's fun to use them, sometimes the potential in these "machines," has been hard to access without the ability to truly understand all the features. This book helped me wrap my mind around several foundational sound synthesis concepts which had eluded me, and I'm stepping beyond the presets on all my synths very happily, now.

I am about to finish this book. On the brigth side, after you read this book, you get a sense on how to think about synths and instruments you would like to shape. on the other hand, language can really become upseting ("i am not this or that ten times during a short book?"), too polite (mentioning there are other synths n times), or too repetitive ("this is the same as..."). but that would pass more easily if the book had more fundamental explanations. nothing is said about Why one thing result in another. It also explains the easiest things too many times using the same words...repetitive. it also could explain things more visually. But it has it's bright side. if you want to move from 5% understanding of the synths to 15% in one day, it helps. it goes over (very superficially) a lot of things, and is a great source for putting evrything toghether. The examples are also valuable and as others commented, not giving too much detail is a very strong plus for the author, lending the readers to explore and discover-with some guidance. Overall a 3 star book. But it can very easily be a 1 star for you, or a five star. If you are looking for a light read and already have the apps and cannot understand a thing there, but already know things like envelopes or filters, it's a 5. if you already understand some basics, and already know a bit about the synths, it can be a three. if you are looking for usefull references and some solid reference (even if superficial), it's a 1.
