Présentation de l'éditeur

"Sometimes you might think, 'What's the use of teachings on emptiness? How does this philosophy help me when I have problems in everyday life?' However, if you can think [about emptiness], it's the most powerful meditation to shatter the hallucinations. It's like an atomic bomb. Problems happen in your daily life because you believe the hallucinations to be real. The most powerful, immediate way to stop problems is to remember emptiness. You should especially remember emptiness when you are in situations where there's a danger of giving rise to strong anger or uncontrolled desire and creating heavy negative karma and causing great harm to others."

In this small book Lama Zopa Rinpoche covers an incredible amount of ground. He starts by emphasizing the importance of compassion and universal responsibility and how to make life meaningful, then gives a brief explanation of the nature of the enlightened mind and how we can attain it, and finally offers an amazing and extensive explanation of emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality, analyzing the way various phenomena exist and teaching how to meditate on emptiness. Within these teachings, Rinpoche also touches on several of the other main points of the path to enlightenment, such as bodhicitta, the three scopes and impermanence. But, in the end, this wonderfully practical book is a manifestation of Rinpoche's peerless wisdom realizing emptiness and a testament to the personal experience of this rare and precious teacher.

This teaching, how things and events exist, is fundamental to the Eightfold Noble Path, in that it is pertains to the first fold, Right View.

I have this in book form from the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archives. I am going to purchase it also for Kindle so I can take it with me everywhere.

If you are familiar with the Four Noble Truths, then this book about how things and events exist, is very important to the Fourth Noble Truth; it's the starting fold for the Noble Eightfold Path. And Lama does a very nice job of introduction.

And so I recommend it. Another book to check into subsequently is "Appearance and Reality: The Two Truths in the Four Buddhist Tenet Systems" by Guy Newland. It provides a more in-depth, historically based next step after you've read Lama's book, in my opinion. But a very important next step to arrive at what I think is the best articulation of Right View, in the tradition of His Holiness. But this isn't something like an article of faith; it is, rather, something that has to be thought through to its conclusion.

This is a fundamental logical dissertation on the heart sutra,Lankavatara and diamond sutra with a Tibetan spin. I recommend for those who chose to explore in more depth the Lankavatara sutra translation buy Bill Porter as well as the Diamond Sutra and Platform Sutra. The "Zen Teachings of Huang Po" by John Blofeld gives a little backdrop for understanding the workings of mind.
The only problem that I have with the Tibetan Method is the reliance on Dieties, hungry ghost, etc. From a Buddhist perspective, dieties, hungry ghost and other imagined realities doe not exist nor are they needed for elightenment. You can be a Christian, Jew or any other religion and achieve enlightenment. Meaning that you can develop chitta with Buddhist methods without changing your fundamental religion or belief set. The teachings of Buddha transcend religion so please do not get hung up on this is my religion and this is not my religion. Know only that the I is not the I and that freedom from suffering for all beings is the goal.

I'm not Buddhist but I loved reading this because the philosophies of Buddhism have always interested me. I don't think you can instruct someone on how to find meaning, though, so I don't know how helpful this would be to someone looking for help in that area. Better for people interested in thinking about things.

Although it appears sometimes repetitive it is because that is the Tibetan tradition of repeating the concepts, it starts slow but then it goes deep into the explanation of reality; meaning the emptiness of everything the void.

I am still reading "How Things Exist". I practice Tibetan Buddhism and I find that reading sources in addition to my teachers and lineage sometimes makes things clearer for me. Lama Zopa Rinpoche writes in a simple and clear style that is easy to read and understand.
