Book by Lou Reed

Lou Reed has just taken off the wooden beads he wears around his neck and is suggesting good ways to start meditating. For the past couple of years (he cant remember how many exactly) these beads have become as important a part of his sartorial armour as his trademark shades and torn shirts. Its a surreal moment. Meditation is the last thing you might associate with the so-called Godfather of Punk... he has just released a meditation album called Hudson River Wind Meditations... Reed originally wrote the album of meditation music for his own use a couple of years ago, but then other people wanted copies. Its geared up to help to you to focus, he says. I call it centring. I use the music all the time. I leave it on all day because living in the city it has an intriguing ability to absorb the outside sound and kind of weave that into itself somehow... --The Times, Body & Soul, Saturday 21 July 2007

Attention il ne s'agit pas d'un livre mais d'un CD audio de musique composée par Lou Reed pour la pratique du Tai Chi et de la méditation; donc forcément répétitif et minimaliste.

Yet Another Side to Lou Reed. 14 mai 2007
Par Louie Bourland - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Thirty-two years after the release of his notorious electronic instrumental album "Metal Machine Music", Lou Reed has returned to the electronic genre once again with "Hudson River Wind Meditations". Unlike the endless streams of feedback and noise that was "Metal Machine Music", "Hudson River Wind Meditations" is a quiet meditative collection of four ambient pieces and is intended as a serious musical work (as opposed to the former album being an obvious joke on Reed's former record label RCA). The intention of this music is made clear in Reed's brief liner notes to the album. This isn't music designed to make a person scream but rather a collection of music that is tailor-made for relaxation.
"Hudson River Wind Meditations" opens with two extended pieces. The opening piece "Move Your Heart" is a 28-minute minimalist piece consisting of slow pulsating synths. There is very little change throughout this piece and the music almost seems as if it were a long loop set on infinite repeat. There is a striking similarity between this piece and Brian Eno's disc-length piece "Neroli".
The second extended piece "Find Your Note" runs for close to 32-minutes and consists of endless droning sine-wave tones. While the ambient nature of the previous piece is still very much present, the overall style is more similar to the electronic music created in the 1960's (ie: the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen or Lamonte Young).
The disc closes with two shorter pieces. The two-minute "Hudson River Wind" is simply an electronic simulation of ocean waves while the closing "Wind Coda" is basically a five-minute summary of what was heard in the previous three pieces - the pulsating notes of "Move Your Heart" combined with the sine-waves of "Find Your Note" and the white noise of "Hudson River Wind".
This is definitely a different type of album from Lou Reed. This isn't the type of music to sing and dance to. This is a quiet, non-intruding piece of background music that suits its purpose perfectly. While this music may seem boring to some, it is quite beautiful and relaxing.
If "Metal Machine music" turned a lot of people off, "Hudson River Wind Meditations" may be likely to reverse that.

Don't bother to listen to it 2 juillet 2008
Par Robert H. Jones - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
I do a lot of intricate works with databases and fixing corrupt data so a work of art like this makes the day fly by. I put it on, crank up the jobs and get completely relaxed while plowing through a jungle of human errors. As Eno's Ambient albums helped me while getting my B.A., this album helps make what should be stressful flow like a stream. But you don't listen to it, you let it in.
I've been practicing Tai Chi since 1986 as well.

Lou meditates 14 mars 2009
Par J. R. Moore - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
People, let's relax, this is what it is. I've owned it for a year now and had only given it one listen. Then I got into a spiritual direction program at the local Jesuit college and kept having trouble praying. One day inspiration hit and I began to use this cd, along with a Brian Eno ambient music cd, voila! my problem was solved. So if you're looking for classic Lou Reed don't bother with this, buy the Berlin concert he did recently, which I think is an improvement on the original album. If you want to meditate, do tai chi, etc. ...look no further.

Not meant for everyone, so don't take it to be! 7 mars 2011
Par Said Head - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
So many negative reviews seem to only pretend to know much about ambient music, and it's really sad because this is an excellent collection of ambient/drone/noise compositions. I personally am an enthusiast of experimental/non-conventional music, and am perhaps one of the biggest fans of Metal Machine Music around, so when I first learned of this release I jumped at it; mind you that I didn't simply say to myself 'Lou Reed does ambient music? I already love it!' or something similar and equally pretentious; actually, I heard Wind Coda on Reed's myspace page a few years back (decades past in terms of social networking)and I really liked it.

The big point in defense of the noisy equivalent, MMM (it even looks menacing when abbreviated!), or any ambient/noise record, is you have to listen and appreciate the subtleties, the quiet moments that bring about the atmosphere or change it somehow, the warming or cooling of the tone, or your ear suddenly picking up on a sound that had always been there; these are all things I listen to and look forward to every time I pop on a record of this sort, just the same as with MMM, or really any other Lou Reed album (because he has profound subtleties, whether he lets you in on them or not).

To name, for example of ambient music gone bad, the latest David Lynch album (yes, the mastermind behind Eraserhead), called Polish Night Music, is a totally bland 'finger holding a note on a keyboard while another randomly pokes at the keys of a piano' that goes on for an hour, it's really, really awful: no subtleties, the contrast between piano and ambient tones are irrelevant and often conflicting enough to be painful, and virtually the same thing the entire way through. This album however has two very lengthy compositions filled with quiet electronic wisps and howls, but changes gradually, almost evolving as an organic thing. The other two tracks, much shorter, are slightly less 'involving' in way of meditation but are equally relaxing.

The last thing I would like to point out is my terrible problems of insomnia; one reason I enjoy ambient music is that it helps my mind at ease as I try to sleep. This album does just that, I can enjoy while reading, walking, etc, or use it as a functional tool. As a piece of plastic, it does more for me than others can.

And now, really the final thing is this: this is not The Velvet Underground, Transformer, Rock N Roll Animal, etc. It simply isn't meant for that specific--or rather the Lou Reed--audience. I luckily can enjoy Lou Reed and this in equal shares, but it most likely won't be for the vast majority of Lou Reed fans. I think a good test to see if you like this is ask yourself how many times you've willingly listened to the entirety of 'Like A Possum'.
