Fantastic music! But...this version only contains 12 of the 15 songs available on the "Deluxe Album". What a pisser! Wish I would have investigated before purchasing!!

I saw "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" when it came out in late November '13 (over 2 months ago), and only the other day did I stumble upon this 'soundtrack'. I decided to check it out.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (12 tracks; 48 min.) starts off with Coldplay's "Atlas" which we hear as the movie's end credits are rolling. "Atlas", a piano-driven slow-burner of sorts, is one of Coldplay's better tracks in the last 5 years, certainly better than anything on their "Mylo Xyloto" album. Of Monsters and Men's "Silhouettes" is actually in the same vein, with lots of restrained emotion. The National's "Lean" is yet another piano-driven tune, but I like it. I was 100% ready to dismiss Christina Aguilera's "We Remain", but it's actually a great pop tune (kinda reminds me of Katy Perry). The Weeknd's "Devil May Cry" is a nice ballad. Lorde covers Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" in a way that only the words remain recognizable. Nice, except that Gary Jules did the very same thing with Tears For Fears' "Mad World" more than a decade ago (and also for a movie, namely "Donnie Darko"). The Lumineers' "Gale Song" is a beautiful sparse tune. It is followed by THE highlight on here, namely Ellie Goulding's gorgeous "Mirror". Much has been made about Patti Smith's "Capitol Letter" so when I finally heard it, I was surprised how unmoved I was. On the other hand, it may very well be the only song on here that is specifically written with the movie in mind. Santigold closes out the album with "Shooting Arrow At the Skies".

In all, I was pleasantly surprised with this album, and have been playing this quite a bit lately, even if the movie has long left the theater (and my mind). To be honest, I recall only Coldplay's song playing over the end credits, and while there may have been a few more songs featured in the movie, surely the majority of the songs on this 'soundtrack' was not. Which is perfectly OK. You don't need to have seen the movie to enjoy this collection of mostly "indie music" (even if most of the artists surely are not indie artists). This collection is definitely worth checking out!

Like any decent movie soundtrack or 'Music From and Inspired By...' as they're often called nowadays, the songs included reflect the movie's themes either in lyrical content, tone, title or all three. And like all soundtracks only two or three songs will actually appear in the movie, probably during the credits. Yet despite the appearance of the bigger name acts, these soundtracks pretty much serve as vehicles for lesser knowns/up-n-comers to gain exposure, which is fine. This one's also a departure from the first which was strongly rooted in Depression Era traditional folk songs and is more modern, more electronic and yet more desperate and hopeful, as befits the shift in tone for the franchise.

Some highlights:
Atlas by Coldplay- typically Coldplay, but the ticking clock theme represented by the piano and underneath effects are what deliver the message home.

Silhouettes by Of Monsters and Men- lead singer Nanna Hilmarsdottir voice is strongly similar to Regina Spektor's, which is a very good thing here. Kick drums and bassline are the strength behind this one.

Elastic Heart by Sia (feat. The Weeknd and Diplo)- kind of all over the place, starting with the constantly looped refrain "I don't care" underneath the entire song. Second verse is done by Weeknd, and towards the end it just gets noisy with everything going on all at once.

Lean/Dying Is Easy by The National- opening strains are reminiscent of U2's All I Want Is You. Early on this one seems a good fit the film.

We Remain by Christina Aguilera- really gotta wonder what the point of this one is, other than the lyrical reference to burning with fire.

Devil May Cry by The Weeknd- might be the best song on the cd in reference to the film. Especially liking the thundering drumbeat and forlorn guitar/synth combo which are very evocative and apropos. The lyrics are spot on:

"They will parade upon your victory
They will parade upon your victory
You'll put a smile upon their faces
The world will be yours for the taking
The story you birth will be ageless
Just learn to love pain and be patient"

Who We Are by Imagine Dragons- absolutely loved Ready-Aim-Fire, their contribution to the Iron Man 3 soundtrack; this one not so much. And it kinda sounds like RAF, too.

Everybody Wants To Rule the World by Lorde- a goth/industrial romp over the eighties classic that's pitch perfect for the film. Only issue with this one is it's way too short.

Gale Song by The Lumineers- our first return to the Appalachian Depression Era-stylings of the first soundtrack which are popular nowadays.

Mirror by Ellie Goulding- the eerie piano notes also brings a sense of time running out as well as that of being haunted by personal demons. Switches to a more modern synth-base and pulse beat, lyric about being `the girl who was on fire'.

Capital Letter by Patti Smith- another return to the series' original musical folk roots. One of those specifically about Katniss, but it's just plain weird.

Many of the songs seem to only have been included because of references to a girl burning/being on fire- a direct reference to Katniss, of course. Like when the Sneaker Pimps appeared on the soundtrack from The Saint simply because Six Underground had a line about being "open to falling from grace." Ok, whatever. Makes for some uneven listening, but overall it's still pretty good.

Normally I don't buy movie soundtracks because I can only find one or two songs that I like, so it's a waste. I bought this cd because I LOVE the hunger games series and I knew this had Christina Aguilera's song We Remain, so I figured it couldn't be too bad. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I loved basically every song on this CD, like every one! And even the ones that weren't my favorite, still were good enough that I probably would have bought them on itunes if they came out as singles. Seriously great CD, buy it!

HASH(0x93e91c3c) étoiles sur 5 Excellent Compilation whether you're into the Hunger Games or not... 24 novembre 2013
Par Music Fan - Publié sur Amazon.com
I bought the soundtrack the day it came out, and I haven't stopped listening to it yet. After seeing the movie, my initial opinion was reaffirmed, this soundtrack nails it.

The soundtrack flows with the theme of The Hunger Games quite well, excellent choices that go along with the movie. Alexandra Patsavas knows how to pull together a good soundtrack. The lyrics & arrangements evoke the characters, giving voice to the feelings of Katniss, Peeta, Gale & Snow. From Coldplay's Atlas, (melancholy tone) "carry your world", to Sia's Elastic Heart "you did not break me... I'm still fighting for peace", The Weeknd's Devil May Cry, "faces in the crowd, will smile again, and the devil may cry by the end of the night...". Antony & The Johnsons bring to mind the sadness of Katniss while Ellie Goulding sings "I was the girl who was on fire". Lorde does a terrific cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World, providing a different point of view of the songs lyrics through her vocal arrangement. Shooting Arrows at the Sky by Santigold just fits. All the songs are good. The National, Of Mice and Men, Imagine Dragons, The Lumineers... all good. My least favorite song is Capitol Letter by Patti Smith, but that being said...it still fits.
