Twisted by black magic and driven by soul crushing loss, Lowin Fenly, a young scribe-turned-knight, struggles to hold onto his humanity as he battles to rescue that which he values most in the world. Along the way he will be forced to make friends of his enemies, and enemies of his friends. He will grow from a boy no one has heard of, into a man destined to leave the land forever changed, but how will he be remembered? Will he be Sir Fenly, Hero of the People, or will he be Lowin the Dread, a monster to terrify children?

The Hungering Saga is a sweeping story that begins in familiar fantasy territory, and quickly twists many of the genre staples back upon themselves. These books contain violence and sexual situations.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Surprisingly Good 6 janvier 2012

I will admit, I was fairly shocked at how good The Hungering Saga was. The limited information about it and the single review (at the time of writing this review) made me wary of the purchase, but I was glad I did.

The book's single greatest strength, at least for me, is it only follows one character's perspective. I despise having to get to know, and waste time meeting and following the perspective of a dozen different people all who are generally irrelevant. In addition, there was little "fluff" to the book. No waxing about how green the bloody trees are, or random detailed descriptions of tables or food. It was concise, and move quickly enough to keep my attention. The character development was sufficient to get to know the main characters and enjoy the story. The emotional developments, while sometimes fairly distressing in their content, were poignant enough to for me to empathize with.

The book had a decent story line, with a solid first and second parts. The last part seemed a little rushed but didn't take anything away from the experience. Overall, I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a "mature" darker fantasy.

Out of thousands of books I have read, this will join ranks of the other 5 star books, and I feel it deserved a review.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Could have been great except ... 22 avril 2013

I have a difficult time rating this one. The story is four stars - good world building, well developed characters, plenty of twists and turns, interesting but not excessively used magic system, and it keeps your attention. The story rarely dragged. I enjoyed the story.

However, it is thoroughly ruined by the sheer quantity of editorial/proofreading errors. I highlighted plenty of examples for the purpose of quoting them, and giving the author hell for each one individually, but I thought better of it. Instead I'll just hit some of the highlights ... er ... lowlights, if you please:

Using "then" instead of "than", several times.

Plenty of missing words in sentences ("... he was lingering very death"). Really?

Several times using "it's" instead of "its".

Use of plural nouns where singular nouns were indicated. C'mon. You were supposed to learn that by 8th grade at the latest.

Lots of really screwed up sentences ("His eyes meat those or Reamis ..." HUH? How about "His eyes met those of Reamis" instead? Make more sense? Yeah, I thought it might.

The author getting confused about his own characters ("The chieftain led Uwian to the center of the clearing"). Um ... Uwian IS the chieftain.

Use of the wrong words ("... remain behind to support the ground troupes.") Try TROOPS, man.

Using "site" instead of "sight".

Using "loosing" instead of "losing".

Using "manor" instead of "manner."

And this one: "... the crew of the ship gave us a wide birth." Well, that sounds painful.

Oh, and not a single chapter number to be found. Not a damned one.

I could go on. And on and on and on. But I think you get the idea by now. A few mistakes are, sadly, expected in this day and age, especially in the Kindle editions, but there are just way too many in this trilogy. So I knocked two stars off for the complete lack of proper editing and/or proofreading. I'm really surprised I finished the book. So, to the author: HIRE A COMPETENT EDITOR NEXT TIME! Or at least an adequate proofreader.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful Modern Fantasy - Not To Be Missed! 29 novembre 2011
Par Sarah T - Publié sur Amazon.com

The Hungering Saga Complete comprises the first three novels by Heath Pfaff: The Noble Fool, The Vengeful Malice and The Snow Song.

To tell too much about the story in these books would be a great spoiler, since much of the joy of the first book is in the strange, slightly terrifying and engrossing secrets that unfold. However a short description can be found on the author's site:

"A man is not great because he is a good man. A great man can be good, evil, or any shade of gray in between. A great man is a man who sees the world around him, and changes it to suit him, instead of letting it change him to suit itself. Lowin Fenly didn't want to be a hero, and he never thought of being a villain, but sometimes the path that must be walked by great men leads to dark places. Body twisted by dark magic, the scribe-turned-Knight must learn to control the beast he is becoming, or risk losing the few remnants of humanity he clings to."

The book is certainly rather different from most fantasy around at the moment: and a refreshing difference. These books kept me page turning, with their well-developed characters and fascinating ideas. The pacing of this novel is one of its strengths: there are no dull chapters to slog through in the middle of the book, as befalls so many novels in the genre, everything is neat and tight without feeling rushed. The action sequences, of which there are plenty, are written masterfully - they stand with the best.

I can only highly recommend giving this series a try. Although the fantasy market is flooded, and there's a lot of very mediocre work around, this story stands apart from the pack and truly feels like something new and exciting. Don't hesitate to give it a try!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Fast paced and fun 2 février 2012

The Hungering Saga was fast paced and entertaining. While I think the story is interesting, character development is rather meh and I wasn't a big fan of the ending. Many of the thought processes of the protagonist just seem far fetched to me. Also, and perhaps this only bothers me because I teach, the kindle edition was FULL of misspellings and grammar mistakes. Whoever makes these digital copies needs to step it up or get a better editor.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 So Bad I had to write my first review 26 juillet 2012
Par PRMX96 - Publié sur Amazon.com

I have been reading fantasy for over 30 years now. I have purchased and read 94 books (I just counted) in the last three years, mostly fantasy, covering the entire spectrum of quality. I very often rely on the reviews for purchases, and for the most part there is usually someone in the reviews saying more or less what I would say. Not here, though, the reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

This book (Saga?) is dreadful. Here are just four of the reasons why:

1. The writing is abysmal. And I mean Abysmal. Here's an example: our ridiculously invincible hero (he, like the other Knights of Ethan, can heal virtually instantaneously from almost any wound) is miraculously saved (give him a break, he was fighting 1 vs. thousands in a pit). Here's what he says to his savior:

"'You couldn't have arrived at a better time.' I said as I bowed deeply to Tairyk, ignoring my momentairly [sic] discomfort. In truth, I wished he had arrived a few moments earlier, but I could hardly complain when I had not expected help at all. It was better that he had chanced upon us when he did, rather than not at all."

If the author had only cut those idiotic and unnecessary last two sentences, he might have at least caught the punctuation and spelling errors in the first two-that-should-be-one.

2. It's lecherous. The main character's first love interest is described as physically appearing "in the realm of fourteen or fifteen" and not yet fully developed. Later, *slight spoiler* he has repeated sex with a woman (his girlfriend) who is an adult, but due to a trauma, is emotionally and intellectually at the level of a fourteen year-old [well, that's how she is described, she acts younger and simpler.] ICKY.

3. It's not thoughtful.

There's a potentially morally/ethically/emotionally complicated scene where there is kind of a "mutual" rape. While in prison, the hero is kinda/sorta compelled to have sex with (effectively) one of his jailers, but he's horny from being in jail. She, as it turns out, didn't really want to have sex with him but (we are asked to beleive) does it to spare her comrades from the duty. How's it dealt with? With all the depth of the fantasies of an 8th grade boy: no big deal, he apologizes for calling her a whore and she tells him don't worry about it I kind of liked it, and they end up buds. Doesn't matter had sex, right?

4. DEUS EX MACHINA. It is everywhere, but especially where it matters. The end of the first book is hysterical. The heroes get into a tough jam and how do they get out? SPOILER:

The author just throws a ghost (the only ghost in the trilogy, btw) of the man who built the house who alone possess the knowledge that the centuries-old and heavily occupied mansion they are in has "catacombs", with a secret entrance(!) in the closet of the room they happen to be in. I not kidding, they go into the closest, do a few hand jestures, and the ghost actually says "...And we are free".
