Beginning at a young age Joey Lott experienced intensifying anxiety. For several decades he lived with restrictive eating disorders, obsessions, compulsions, and an inescapable fear. By the time he was 30 years old he was physically sick, emotionally volatile, and mentally obsessed with keeping any and all unwanted thoughts and experiences at bay.

At this time Lott was living on a futon mattress in a tiny cabin in the woods. He was so sick that he could barely move. He was deeply depressed and hopeless. All this despite doing all the "right" things such as years of meditation, yoga, various "perfect" diets, clean air, and pure water.

Just when things were at their most dire, a crack appeared in the conceptual world that had formerly been mistaken for reality. By peering into this crack and underneath all the assumptions that had been unquestioned up to that moment, Lott began a great undoing. My husband was cool and kind enough to download this to help me with and to help him understand my food angst. This engrossing book is the gentle Bob Newhart's "Stop it!" of neurotic, obsessive attachments to diets (paleo, low-carb, ketogenic, low FODMAP, SCD, etc.) in an effort to be "healthy." Well worth the read if you believe you suffer from a host of digestive issues.

This book held a mirror up to my face with the person staring back at me begging me to PLEASE EAT MORE FOOD.
For me, eating is a chore plain and simple. And, like Joey, I've run the gamut between paleo, Weston Price, McDougall, Joel Fuhrman, 80 10 10 mostly fruit diet, and everything in between considered healthy. I never eat fast food, packaged food, or at chain restaurants because I'm a snobby food purist. And what has this done for me??? Made me sick sick and more sick, refer to list of symptoms of starvation. Honestly, I truly believe most of the aforementioned eating styles can be healthy short, long term success with require strict attention to getting sufficient calories from both macro and micronutrients with fat restriction being banished from all of them. At age 51, the healthiest I've been as an adult has been will eating a Weston Price style nutrition protocol with plenty of raw milk. The worst I have ever been were the five years I spent attempting to force myself to become a vegan; first cooked, then raw , then 80 10 10 which landed me in the hospital with all signs of starvation. But no matter what friends, family, or blood tests would spell out that I was starving my body of vital nutrients and calories along with over training, and that the vegan diet in all forms wasn't working for me, I continued. I hope that Joey's book will be my first step back to the healthier, happier, fitter version of myself very soon. In fact, I'm going out to price owning goats today. Mmmm raw goat milk :)

couldn't stop reading this! so nice to hear some common sense being used when it comes to diet and health. some may think Joey is oversimplifying but his focus is on good health which is where we all should put more focus.

I like Joey's books a lot and agree with most of what he has to say, but the advice of learning to be fat and content with it is simply not good enough. Neither is prescribing a big helping of cake and cookies to (most) readers. I wish there was a middle ground. Once Joey finds it, hopefully he'll share it with the rest of us ;D

START HERE!!! Reading this will jump-start your understanding of how not eating sufficient amounts of foods is actually making you more sick. As the author says, "this may be hard to swallow", but it has opened up a new understanding into how weight maintenance through the body's set-point actually works.

Easy and enjoyable to read, great style with an even handed scientific approach to different views without having you leave the page to define every other word, Lott gives the facts you need to make decisions about your own health. However, he will encourage you to 'eat'!
