4.0 étoiles sur 5 Cute Pioneer Type Story 1 octobre 2011

This was a cute and heart-warming story of a woman, Margaret, who advertises for a husband and ends up with a ready-made family.

The characters were interesting but one dimensional. The book had an old fashioned feel to it and I would probably rate it a 3.5 if I could. It has promise.

There was conflict in the book but at times it seemed contrived and there sometimes was not enough detail about the struggle to become a family unit but others may feel diffently. Although I chuckled at the unique way Margaret got rid of her competition. She's a smart cookie. Kudos to the author for creating such a character.

My big gripe is how new characters were introduced, out of thin air without any supporting context. For example, in the beginning of the book Pete and Debra were mentioned by name but not explained. I was like, who? It was a cold splash of water and interrupted the flow of the book. I kept wondering if I missed an introduction or conversation somewhere. But, we find out who Pete and Debra are much later in the book(and not a minute before). Additionally, there was interaction with a farmhand that seemed to come out of nowhere and had me scratching my head for context -I didn't understand why Margaret and Jessica made the comments they did. If the author re-edits the book, they may want to consider putting in qualifiers when they first mention these characters, to lessen confusion.

Since this book used to be combined with another story, I can only assume the other story - A Bride for Tom - should be read before this book. It may explain some of the confusion I had.

Was so disappointed in this book. Thought bride for tom was lighthearted and fine. Was absolutely shocked when graphic sex scene was introduced!!!! Not my idea of a Christian romance. Figured since book 1 was squeaky clean I would be safe....won't make that mistake again!!!! Read the reviews....especially the 1 star, might be given 1 for a good reason. Will never read this author again....deleted both books.

This follow-up to A BRIDE FOR TOM was not as good, but I still gave it a 3.5 and rounded it up to a four. Like in the first novella, the historical research was lacking. The book was set in 1869, and several terms were used that had not come into usage yet. "Pep talk" was not used until 1930, "soccer" not until 1900, and bassinet not until 1875. In addition, their sugar wouldn't have been granulated. It would have been in loaf form and would not have poured out. High chairs did not have removable trays until much, much later. Even in the 1940's the wooden high chairs had attached trays that would swing up and down. It is doubtful Margaret would have been allowed to be with Joseph alone before marriage without a chaperone, and "Debra" would have likely been spelled "Deborah." Margaret would more than likely have worn a pretty nightdress on her wedding night and not have gone to bed naked. It is also unlikely a six-year-old boy would have used the word "obnoxious."

Unlike the first novella, this one had a very graphic sex scene, although it was Joseph and Margaret's wedding night. It didn't need to be that explicit, however.

All in all, I still enjoyed the book. It was a quick read with an interesting plot.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Unbelievable premise but nice anyway 15 décembre 2011

I really liked Margaret's character; she's spunky and she goes after what she wants. Unfortunately, that really doesn't fit with her obvious low self-esteem issues. If you can put aside your knowledge that women simply would not ever seek a mail-order husband, especially not in the 19th century on the western frontier, then you can enjoy this cute little story of a young woman who is waiting for a young man and his older brother with four small boys comes instead to marry her. Her adjustments to motherhood were very amusing, especially the bits about how her little boys were determined to help her. It reminded me of the times my daughters tried to "help" me when they were small. Taking everything into account, I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to others as long as they don't expect realism in the story.

I found this in the "Religious Fiction" category and neglected to read the entire Amazon page on it before downloading it. I was appalled by the explicit content and, needless to say, deleted it immediately. I have become much more cautious with my purchases since then.
