4.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting New Author 11 avril 2012

For an author who appears to be self-published (or at least not pushed by the big romance publishers), Grace Callaway is a new find for which $3.99 is definitely worth spending.

Since it appears to be a point of contention among reviewers of her book, who appear to be setting their review stars not for the plot or structure but whether or not there's too much sex, I'll spend a little time explaining how explicit or not explicit the love scenes are. Callaway does not shy from using very specific and descriptive words for body parts and actions that would not be used in daily "polite" company talk. Sure she refers to breasts as a word rhyming with "pits" and details touching private body parts, but then the book is titled "Her Husband's HARLOT" thus expectations that the author would only allude to sex is rather puritanical. However the love scenes are in no way grotesque nor excessively used. Thus if you're thinking there is a plethora of sex be advised that there is not; anyone who has read Lora Leigh, old school Susan Johnson, or even Lisa Valdez's Passion will have no problem with the love scenes and think they are tame in comparison. However, anyone expecting Mary Balogh level of description involving love scenes or expects Jane Austen lack of love scenes, then you will be highly shocked.

The story revolves around a self-made merchant man who is suddenly thrust into the aristocratic world of England when he finds out that he is really the legitimate son of a marquess who died with no other issue. He ends up marrying a woman of the aristocracy but struggles with being accepted into society and deeming himself worthy of his wife. He doesn't know how to act around his wife in normal social settings much less in the bedroom, as he doesn't know whether high class ladies like it like ladies of the social classes he grew up in (poor and middle class). For the heroine's part, she doesn't know how to talk to her husband and knows very little of bedroom activities. They have a disastrous wedding night and now are at an impasse as to how to grow their marriage. There is some mysterious doings and crime involved in the plot line, but the majority of the story revolves around getting the love grooving in their relationship.

Callaway's writing is smooth and descriptive, the characters are well defined and thought out, and the scenes flow from one to the next without the choppiness that can often be found with less experienced authors. For a self-published book it's wonderfully edited and you almost can't tell the difference between her writing and that of publishing house accepted authors. The only exception are the last few chapters which drag out the story a bit too long, the crime is wrapped up a too cleanly, and the last love scene overly uses the t-word rhyming with "pits" and it was rather annoying to get through as there are definitely more than two words for breasts in the English dictionary. However these flaws were minor and did not deter from the overall satisfaction with how the love story between the hero and heroine developed and ended.

I'm new to this e-book thing in that I enjoy holding a real book in my hands, however Grace Callaway is definitely on my list of romance authors to follow and I look forward to the next book in her Mayhem in Mayfair series.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 wonderful historical romance, well-written and erotic 29 février 2012

I'm an avid reader of historical romance, with Lisa Kleypas, Laura Kinsale, and Elizabeth Hoyt as some of my favorite authors. I bought this book on a whim, because the description sounded interesting and the price was right. I am pleasantly surprised at how good this book is! Intelligently written, good character development, plausible obstacles, etc. I can't disagree with the negative reviews, because the complaints are about the high level of eroticism in the book. A lot of romance readers enjoy explicit sex scenes, but if you don't, this is definitely not the book for you. I agree with the reviewer who said to read the sample first.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful read! 11 janvier 2012

I really really enjoyed Her Husband's Harlot, what a wonderful debut for Grace Callaway! It was a great read, one that I sped through quickly because I was so drawn into the relationship between the H/h. I felt like Helena was very relatable and likable. Despite Nicholas' repeated hot/cold treatment of her, she was able to push past and persevere. Also, in another book, Nicholas' resistance could have become tedious. But in this case, it didn't. If you factor in all the different things that were working against him (both tangible and emotional/psychological) and the very short period of time he had to adjust to life in the ton, his reasons for resisting love were actually quite understandable and not fabricated. The passion between them was very real, which made for some very well written and scorching hot scenes! You've got to love an intense, brooding hero and an innocent, but bold heroine.

In addition to the H/h, all the secondary characters were well-developed and three dimensional. I was definitely intrigued by Paul and his apparent nonchalance about life. This actually seemed to mask something...what, I don't know yet, but I hope that Ms. Callaway gives us a chance to find out! The mystery component was interesting too and helped reveal Nicholas' past. The ending wasn't entirely obvious, but neither was it terribly shocking.

Overall, this was a very delightful read that I would definitely recommend, especially at such a good price. I can't wait to see what Ms. Callaway has in store for us next!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A great read, a solid 4 and 1/2 stars! 19 février 2013

I really liked this book. Nicholas and Helena are great leads and I cheered for them all the way. Except for the first scene in the brothel, they didn't really have much interaction with each other in the first half of the book or so and I got impatient waiting for them to get together to talk, confront each other or something. I thought their time apart lasted just a little too long. I liked that Helena took the initiative to try to get her marriage back on track and wouldn't give up on Nicholas regardless of the obstacles he threw in her way.

Some reviewers complained about the explicit language but the language didn't bother me nor did it detract from my enjoyment of the book. Considering Nicholas's rough background, his using explicit language seemed in chracter for him. The story would have been pretty near perfect except for the distance between Nicholas and Helena as described above, and a couple of things that weren't explained like Marianne's not being herself later on in the story. This book is a solid 4 and 1/2 stars, rounding up to 5 stars, and definitely worth a re-read in the future.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Sometimes romance has to be steamy 15 avril 2012

I thoroughly enjoy the steaminess of this novel. There are episodes of voyeurism, the language is quite blunt, raw, and the scenes are graphic. It is very bold writing for romance, a departure from the traditional fare. There is a villain, romantic conflict and sex. Lots of it. I think that the novelist balances all of these elements well in the story. What might be overwhelming for some readers is the graphic nature of the sex scenes. If that is the case, the enjoyment of the story will become obstructed by the rawness of these scenes.

With that being said, this book is hot. If you don't like explicit language or if you prefer euphemistic language for sex and body parts, this book is not for you. This book puts me in mind of novels by Cheryl Holt without the triteness that she sometimes uses in her novels. The characters were likable. I like that the heroine is trying to keep her marriage in tact and not looking to run away. However, how she chooses to do so is quite incredulous. The hero is stubborn, and his torment and love for his wife are touching. Readers may not like the scenes of Nicholas and Helena at the brothel. But what I think that author was trying to communicate through the hero's actions is not a condoning of infidelity, but an understanding of what goes through a person's mind when they are torn by grief and feelings of hopelessness in a relationship and uses a substitute for the person they love. That became clear during a second reading of the novel. That substitute for his wife is his wife in disguise also makes this obvious.

This is not a heavy read. It is not a poignant novel or a flowery romance. It is gritty and not for the faint of heart, but definitely satisfying. It is the kind of novel that someone has to read for his or herself and make his or her own judgement. The reader has to understand that the third element of the story is graphic sex to add to the mystery and romantic conflict.
