Yet, Steven has a secret past that is destined to reveal itself, and he is soon to become a stranger to everyone. The wheels are set in motion for his radical upheaval. But first love is a powerful thing, and the connection forged between Caitlin and Steven is not easily broken.

The impossible is only the beginning...

*****

"A very original paranormal novel with great romance and a unique story-line..."
Christopher Fischer, TOP 500 REVIEWER

"When you first start getting into the story you automatically think Vampires, but as you discover more, Vampires is not the correct term for Steven's new family... It's well worth the read and as I got to the end I was frantically swiping my kindle screen looking for more as I wanted to know what happened next. I will definitely be reading the next book and would highly recommend it."
Orchard Book Club

"Not usually the kind of book I like to read, although I was a big fan of Anne Rice in my youth. The unexpected twist in the tale made for compulsive reading, literally forcing you to discover what happens next. This story had it all, brilliantly written, loads of interesting characters, mystery, romance with an unsettling undercurrent of tension. I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy!"
A Dawes

"I was not sure that this book was going to be my thing, but I couldn't put it down. I loved the characterisation and Vanessa's style of writing - these are 'unbelievable' characters made completely believable!"
Charlotte

"This is a captivating work that crackles and pops off the page with sparkling originality, wit, and insight into the larger themes of love and the human condition. Do yourself a favor and read it.
D. Byron

"Although the author is inspired by novels in the same genre there is nothing wrong in that - most of us take inspiration from one source or another. Vanessa Wester has clearly taken inspiration from her own life and from her imagination. She has clearly spent time creating the imaginary citadel and understands its geography and customs which are made clear to the reader. The story-line flows smoothly... I always think there must be something to recommend a book which you would not normally select..."

As an 8th grade English teacher, reading is my passion. In order to entice my middle school kids to read, I must make sure that what I present to them is something that will not only catch their attention, but keep it through to the end. Popular series such as Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, and the Divergent Trilogy are series that I've read and presented to my students, and received an overwhelming response with kids fighting for books to read them. In saying that, I am constantly looking for books that are up to my standards to "infect" my students with that bug to read. I can say, after reading Hybrid, that this is my next book craze that will be taking over my class. Since I live in the USA, the terms and spellings of Great Britain threw me at first, but was great to be exposed to a different way of reading. Will be great discussions in class!

Hybrid begins in the setting of England, with student Caitlin joining the University, and meeting new people. It threw me, at first, because the story does change to the different characters points of view, but you catch on quick after that. At school, Caitlin meets Steven and all that comes with him; many things that even HE didn't realize came with him. You get caught up in young blossoming love, that soon become overshadowed by darknesses hidden by the past. When dark family secrets make themselves known, the story twists into one of survival and the costs of living. Will the overwhelming love endure all costs? Is survival worth losing yourself? Is there anyway out?

The Hybrid series is sure to keep the reader on edge throughout the chapters, and leaves you wanting more at the end. This, to me, is the mark of a true bestseller. It leaves me wanting more, and will leave any reader wanting her to hurry up and release the other books! Any fans of The Hunger Games and/or Twilight will instantly be captivated. I will state, I am NOT a Twilight/vampire fan AT ALL, but I was captivated by this book. You must read to know more! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to "get lost" in a new book, and for any English teacher looking to get their kids hooked on reading. I'm confident in recommending this, and look forward to many more works in this series and by this author.

Vanessa Wester has a great first book in 'Hybrid'. If this is her first, we all have a lot to look forward to in the coming years as she brings out more of this series and hopefully other stories.

The opening is set at a University in England. Wester immeadiately drew me into the worlds of the two main characters, Steven and Caitlin, as well as some very well established secondary characters. I was invested in her creations right away.

Then Vanessa throws me a unique twist I was totally unprepared for, even though I had an inkling of what was eventually going to happen. It's not a simple 'young vampires in love' story by any means. There is a lot more to the core story and how it drives her characters forward. I was actually disappointed when it ended; I wanted more. And from the epiloge, I believe the next book will be even better!

As a further note, I read both 'Hunger Games' and 'Twilight' at the insistence of my family (all female). 'Hybrid' was much more engaging and believable than either of those books. I found 'Twilight' very shallow and simple. 'Humger Games' is better but still just 'Gladiators' for kids. 'Hybrid' is a step above both these books and I would not be surprised to see it on film some time soon.

'Hybrid' is an engaging, fun, twisting, page turner that bodes well for Ms. Wester's writing career. I'm ready to grab books two!

Instantly engaging book that has a twist on the usual vampire stories. The main characters Steven and Caitlin are well matched and I particularly enjoyed the beginning of the story that is set at university and shows how their relationship develops before things start to get confusing for Steven. I don't want to spoil the story for you but would say if you enjoy reading teen/young adult fiction with a strong storyline and great characters then this is the book for you.

Initially I was attracted to 'Hybrid' after reading a great, shorter piece by the same author--so I decided to give this a go. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.

The plot of this book revolves around a 19 year old University student (Steven) who embarks on the typical adjustment to university life (takes classes, occasionally oversleeps, makes friends, meets a girl, etc.). But Steven is going through a very atypical transition as well (at first unknowingly), and this other transition (along with the intersections between the normal and abnormal) is truly the heart of the story.

I liked this book because the plot was engaging and it kept me reading. (In truth, I had a hard time putting it down because I was so invested in the characters and the outcome.) Beyond that, Wester has taken an interesting and pleasantly surprising angle on what would otherwise be a tired plot device (think vampires, though strictly speaking it's a bit more than that). And before you count this book out due to the genre, I will note that the plot is far more engaging than some other recent works in the same vein (pun certainly intended), and in my view better written.

It's not a perfect novel to be sure. At times Wester's prose and dialogue come across a bit clunky (and with dialogue specifically: at times it was overly formal). The book could also use another round of editing to eliminate the remaining typographical and grammatical problems. But that said, none of these minor drawbacks stopped me from reading or really pulled me far enough out of the story to be bothered--and the quality of the writing, overall, more than made up for them.

In summary, this was a pleasant read and I'm hooked. I definitely recommend it and will, without a doubt, be reading the next book in the series.

Stories about paranormals are not my usual read but I was intrigued by the title. Indeed I found the concept of a "hybrid" original. I enjoyed the different take on how the people in the story became vampires and what abilities that gave them. The suggestion that they might contribute to an evolution of a different species was thought provoking. I am curious to see where the author takes the notion of a human/vampire "hybrid."
