Présentation de l'éditeur

Darsey Ice never thought her first trip past Jupiter would claim the lives of her crew. But then she hadn’t expected to become the first person to make contact with aliens either.

Kidnapped, enslaved and lost on the Outer Rim of a mighty civilization light-years from Earth, the only person she can turn to is her enigmatic new owner. A dishonored outcast, he is just as alone as Darsey. Exiled by his people and struggling to survive, the last thing he wants is a rebellious primitive as a slave. She complicates his efforts to hide a dangerous secret and to complete a quest that is likely to claim both their lives. They will only survive if they can find enough trust to forge an unwanted alliance.

Biographie de l'auteur

The Casey Lea partnership began in 1990, with the arrival of Emma Casey Frost, first daughter of Shelley Lea and Gary. Although Emma was a very precocious child, it took another fifteen years before she began working with her mother. The result of that collaboration was a book. IceFlight is a brand new arrival in the sci-fi/romance genre and the first part of a trilogy, The Iron Altar. The second book is set to hit the shelves in late 2013, and another series set in the IceFlight universe is already under way. Shelley Lea (pronounced 'lee') was born on a snowy June day, near the bottom of the world, in Invercargill, New Zealand. Reluctant to supply a date of birth, she would rather claim several decades of maturity, but only a few days of actual wisdom. Those decades have covered a range of jobs, a couple of degrees (including English Lit), one great husband, plenty of travel, two gorgeous daughters, several scatty cats and one idiotic dog. They've also included an on-going struggle to put pen to paper in any spare second. This has led to some dire poetry, some eyebrow raising children's stories and finally to something resembling a novel. This languished in a sadly disjointed and hand written form until... Emma Casey inherited her mother's love of books and the ability to string two sentences together (sometimes three). She proved to be the missing link in trying to actually finish a manuscript. Younger, savvier and able to turn on a computer without causing it to explode, she picked up the book and ran with it. Emma is also studying graphic design and happily provides Casey Lea's cover artwork.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 An epic sparkling space romance ... 16 décembre 2012
Par Pinkscifi - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
Iceflight is total immersion into a whole other universe - a universe with multi feathered and reptilian species, intergalactic travel, awesome futuristic spaceships, and hostile unknown planets. The story centres on the unlikely relationship between banished alien Nightwing, and his hostage, 'primitive' human Darsey, as they embark upon an epic journey to the Slave Auction of an icy planet, and beyond.

The technology in this novel is fantastically futuristic and believable, although sometimes to the extent that I didn't understand it! In parts it often left me with the same feeling as does watching an episode of 'Star Trek' or 'A Town Called Eureka.' However, that isn't to say this was a bad thing.

The characters in the story were imaginative and likeable, with the simmering, long-to-be-realised romance between two of them predictable yet endearing. Many of the characters speak in 'Bridge' - a modified and often witty version of English - which I enjoyed a lot.

To read Iceflight is to be bombarded with clashing, kaleidoscopic colour, and rich, detailed description. Sometimes there was a little too much detail, and I found myself skim-reading the intricasies of a character's every movement, keen for the story to progress. In places, however, this rich description enables the reader to vividly imagine the alien landscape of its outer planets - the picture portrayed of the planet 'Blossom' is quite stunning.

Iceflight is an epic, sparkling space romance, and I'd recommend it to fans of sci-fi, fantasy and romance alike.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Young adult vibe. 11 septembre 2012

First i have to say this book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a more adult version of alien science fiction. What I read felt more like young adult to me. Delete a few scenes and you get a total young adult novel that my kids would probably like. The whole young adult vibe is what made it disappointing to me.
Rating it As an adult alien fiction I'd give it 2 stars. I wouldn't be interested in further books and I wouldn't read it again.
Rating it as young adult alien fiction (minus some scenes) I'd give it 4 stars. My kids would probably like it and would want to read the series.

The first thing I like about Ice Flight is that it is NOT a 2 chapter sample, but a book sized piece.

I never did quite figure out where the ice part of the title came from. Maybe I'm just dense.

It does seem to be a departure from most space sci-fi in that it doesn't try to impress you galactic travel, but gives you personal stories of things without much reference to where things are happening. And I never quite figured out what the characters looked like.

Also, the things the characters do or can do are well beyond the limits of most sci-fi. They go beyond the imaginative to the fantastic.

The writing itself is well done, a huge plus in my opinion.

I had trouble putting it aside to go do something useful.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good start to the series from a talented author! 22 mars 2014

I was keen to read and review this book as I am always interested in new NZ talent. It's an interesting and well written cross genre scifi/ romance tale which is strong enough for me to want to purchase the next in the series.

So on to my take on its strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

After reading many recent self published novels, I am tired of the endless spelling and other mistakes that seem to almost universally accompany these offerings. I'm not particularly anal regarding these matters but it does become wearisome. So what a delight it is to read a novel with an appropriate standard of grammar and spelling (I only observed the one spelling mistake). The authors writing of prose is particularly good (though not literary in tone) and the characters are well drawn. The story is imaginative and the plot engaging. All in all, this was a very professional first novel.

So why was it a 4 star and not a 5?? For me, the novel dragged a bit. There was a bit too much prose and not enough dialogue and action. I kept comparing the book with Ann Aguirre's Sirantha Jax series and found the book somewhat lacking in pacing and slickness. I imagine the book could be edited down further.

I also found there was a relative lack of romantic development between the characters and I had the sense that there were emotional steps missing along their journey. Improving this aspect would turn a good book into a great book IMO.

Having said all this I enjoyed the book, read it cover to cover and am very much looking forward to the next instalment.

Definitely looking for book 2 of the trilogy now.
I recommend this series.
It has been awhile since I spent so much time in a book, usually preferring shorter stories, but this was worth it.
