New York City is one of the most glamorous and impressive cities in the world. To many, and not just New Yorkers, New York is THE capital of the World. This fact is only accentuated by the presence of the most important financial center and the United Nations headquarters.

Aside from the impressive architecture, New York boasts a variety of colorful and gritty neighborhoods. Over the past couple of decades much of the place has been gentrified, but there are still many pockets of cultural diversity that, although far from glamorous, are an essential part of what makes New York so distinct. This is particularly the case with many ethnic and immigrant neighborhood that are to this day deeply steeped in their own traditional backgrounds.

It is this combination of grittiness and glamour that more than anything else symbolizes New York, and it is precisely this that the photographer Christopher Bliss tried to capture in 'Iconic New York'. How iconic most of the landmarks in New York are is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that the photographs in this collection don't have the accompanying titles and captions (you can still find them at the end of the book). And yet, I would argue that most people who look through this book will be able to recognize most of the landmarks.

The photographs in this collection vary in style. The book contains artistic shots, photojournalistic shots, and of course your typical travel and landmark photography. Some of the most interesting photos are the black and white high dynamic range (HDR) photos. HDR is ideally suited for photographs of scenes with a really high contrast in the amount of lighting.

Candid Look at the Big Apple 3 novembre 2011

Some of the most interesting photos are the black and white high dynamic range (HDR) photos. HDR is ideally suited for photographs of scenes with a really high contrast in the amount of lighting. This is for instance the case with dark building in a foreground with really bright sky in the back, and there would be many such scenes in a place with high density of really tall buildings. However, the color HDR photos tend to look surrealistic and unnatural, and turning them into black and white takes away a lot of their usual edge.

This is a very well done and beautiful coffee table book. It is a pleasure to look at and it provides one with a fascinating glimpse of the Big Apple.

This book is almost exactly what I was looking for. It has amazing pictures in black and white and shows NY now and in the past. Only thing is I wish it had descriptions with the pictures so I knew what I was looking at.

New York City, New York - a Once and Present Icon 3 novembre 2011
Par Grady Harp - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
Christopher Bliss is a photographer who understands architectural landscapes and probably few other photographers have been able to capture the spectrum of styles, changes, majesty, and assembled mass as Bliss. This book is simply images. Yes there is a brief but poignant introduction by Former Mayor Ed Koch suggesting why new York is unique among the cities of the world and myriad reasons why this is so (in five languages), but the remainder of the portfolio is devoted to the visual impact that New York has made on Christopher Bliss. As part of Koch's comments he reflects 'The three parks that I am in love with are Central Park, the most famous park in the world, Union Square Park, where people gathered to search for survivors of 9/11 and passed around pictures of missing relatives, and Washington Square Park, a neighborhood park which exists in Greenwich Village across the street form where I live.' Most of Kochs's essay is a love affair with the city, and that is the reason for the significance of the title of this new Bliss collection - Iconic New York.

The images are in both crystalline black and white and full color and it become obvious that there is an unwritten narrative in progress as the book opens with views of the Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi 1885 sculpture, The Statue of Liberty, a gift of appreciation from France to the United States that continues to stand boldly as a welcoming beacon of promise to the immigrants of the world. From there Bliss takes us through the noise of the city, with images of rushing people and cars accompanying the slowly elevated view of the superstructures above the level of the land. From both aerial shots to image composed on the ground Bliss manages to highlight the extraordinary museum of architecture the city presents to the viewer, calling our attention to periods of style in design and building art that walking the sidewalks fails to unveil. The bridges, the parks, the waterways, the park benches of people, the little stores, the vistas of the entire skyline, the images of the arts institutions, photographs by day and by night - rarely have we been so fortunate to see this much of the megalopolis.

But in addition to the sheer grandeur of the special place named New York, NY Christopher Bliss manages to insert the human vantage, making this monograph invitingly personal as well as being a profound survey of urban architectural history. This new book becomes the source for dreams and for memories of a great city. Grady Harp, November 11

Nobody does it better! 6 janvier 2012

Christopher Bliss' love and deep knowledge of New York are evident in every image. Nobody else captures New York's unique look the way he does. Bliss views the familiar through a refreshingly original lens. The result is a series of iconic images, all of which can stand on their own as works of art. A pleasure to own and a great gift.

I could not put the book down. It is the definitive, photography book on the "Big Apple". It should be in everybody's library.
