Présentation de l'éditeur

In Detail

A number of different projects are responsible for the inception and success of many startups, as well helping different companies to greatly reduce costs (for example, TCO). The Samba Project has been a great example for many years for such Open Source technology through its famous and stable version 3. Samba is now a drop in replacement for the heart of the thousands and thousands of networks that run on Microsoft Windows domain controllers. With the new Samba 4 software version, users and system administrators will be able to implement an Active Directory server, file and print services, and so deliver a broad range of network services using Open Source technology. Now with a compatible Active Directory implementation, it will definitely put its name inside every datacenter that wants a cost reduction for the Open Source solutions, without losing the security, stability, and flexibility of any resilient solution.

The book starts off with installing dependencies and building the Samba 4 software, deploying it as an Active Directory Domain Controller and enabling the reader to understand the different roles the software can play on the network.

This book looks at the Samba 4 server roles, and breaks down the mystery and confusion that surrounds each role and which role to use for some specific use cases. It will take you through some clear, practical, and complete examples that will help you to take advantage of the Samba 4 Server quickly and in a simple way. By the end of the book you will be able to provide the required (stable) network services and will have a good grounding in using Samba 4 server to leverage all the benefits just by using Open Source software.

You will learn everything you need to know to implement a Samba 4 Server to provide complete network services, as well as how to integrate with other Operating Systems (for example, GNU/Linux).

This book is an implementation tutorial covering step-by-step procedures, examples, and sample code, and has a practical approach to set up a Samba 4 Server as an Active Directory Domain Controller and also set up different Samba 4 server roles.

Who this book is for

This book is ideal for system administrators who are new to the Samba 4 software, and who are looking to get a good grounding in how to use Samba 4 to implement Active Directory Services. It's assumed that you will have some experience with general system administration, Active Directory, and GNU/Linux systems. Readers are expected to have some test machines (virtual machines), which will be used to execute the examples within this book.

Marcelo Leal studied at Unisinos, where he undertook a Bachelor's degree in Computing Science. Having worked in the IT industry for more than 15 years, he has gained experience as a network/system administrator, support manager, Unix/Linux specialist, storage architect, and most recently, as a solutions architect. He was involved in open source projects since the beginning of his career and has developed some open source tools and submitted patches to the GNU/Linux and FreeBSD kernel. In 2005, he was honored for his participation in the Prêmio TI e Governo for the project "Metrópole", Porto Alegre/RS. He was one of the founders of the Porto Alegre OpenSolaris User Group (PoaOSUG) and was a contributor for the Open High Availability Cluster Community (OHAC) within the OpenSolaris Project; he was the first person outside Sun Microsystems to contribute code to the Open Cluster software. He received three prizes at the OpenSolaris innovation awards program (2007-2008), and presented a solution for Storage High Availability using nonshared disks at the first OHAC Summit in San Francisco/California, USA (2009). In 2013, he presented a highly available, scalable, and high performance three-layer storage solution at SNIA SpeedConf, Santa Clara/California, USA, which, besides adding a lot of value to the storage service, provided huge savings in capex and opex costs (millions of dollars in three years). He has led the architecture and development of a distributed Storage Appliance that, in three years, provided more than 1.5 million operations per second (CIFS, NFS, and iSCSI) for almost 10PB in an area available for a diverse range of products. In 2010, he wrote ZFS -Para usuários OpenSolaris, Windows, Mac e Linux, Brasport, the first book about ZFS in Brazilian Portuguese and actually one of the few books about ZFS available in a language other than English. 5.0 étoiles sur 5 All I wanted to know 21 juin 2014
Format:Broché|Achat vérifié
All I wanted to know and beyond. I used Samba 3 and I've been very interested in version 4 novelties, but I was quite at a loss reading all the how-tos and docs on the web. I've found my answers in this book: I appreciated most GPO use and python scripting explaination; also valuable ACL explaination. It deals with printers sharing and installation via AD too. This book is self-contained but you'll appreciate it better if you know already something about Active Directory, GPO, Windows file sharing and permissions, and the like. Definetely worth its price.

While keeping in mind that the author probably didn't have English as his first language, I attempted to overlook the many errors in writing in this book. Even if you are able to look past the terrible editing, the book lacks quality content and appears to have been padded with useless words and phrases to make it thicker. It reads like a paper from a child still in primary school - using excess wordiness as if the author was trying to meet some arbitrary word count.

With very little experience with Samba 4 (but much with Linux), I worked hard to find some hidden gem in this book - perhaps a tip that was not in Samba's provided documentation - but I was unable to. As Packt Publishing invites readers to submit corrections to them, I began an e-mail correcting mistakes in the book. When that grew too large, I took my red pen to the actual book and removed nearly 1/2 to 2/3 of the content as useless.

Most of the administration of the users and other directory information is completed using Windows tools (which, I guess to some is fine, but here I'm trying to NOT use Windows and since the book is about a tool made to replace a Windows Service I expected it to not focus on the Windows side as much). The portions which aren't using Windows tools expect you to have downloaded the author's custom shell scripts and to run those as root. While many programming and system-administration books I've read provide custom tools to help you learn, these scripts are not broken down in detail in the text - and I bought the book to learn about "Implementing Samba 4" rather than learning how to run someone else's scripts.

The book is inconsistent not just in writing, but in command usage: For example, in similar contexts it recommends using "su -", then "sudo su", and then in another place just "sudo". While all of these can be considered proper/improper for the situations, the inconsistency seems like there was no copy-editor prereading this book.

As a system administrator who still loves to have book-references on hand (There's something nice about being able to flip to a marked page in my "UNIX System Administration Handbook" or "Sudo Mastery" to reference a particular situation which I remember reading about but hadn't encountered yet) - this book is a complete let-down.

I cannot think of a single type of user who would benefit from the purchase and reading of this book.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Very good book but, not enough Windows info 27 septembre 2014
Par Bob Wooden - Publié sur
Due to the many various distributions of Linux it can be difficult find information on any Linux related subject. This book is based on Debian Wheezy with Samba 4 and the information within is very similar to that of Ubuntu (my distro of choice.) As Samba 4 is so very new to many of us users, articles relating experience is trickling out. What is a weakness (in this book) is the lack of complete WIndows information. Having said that, most all books relating to the heterogeneous environment of Linux/Samba4/WindowsOS are always weak in Windows information. Once any writer, any writer, "bumps the Windows environment line" they usual pull back and retreat. User (like myself) are left to research the Windows environment for further information.

If your setting us Samba4 for the first time this is a very good book. The complete Debian setup is within and user achieve a operational Samba4 server.

Now, I just have to find a good book about the Windows (7) side of "group policy management' and how to integrate W7 into a Samba4 AD DC environment.
