Can we believe that this is Steve Robinson's first book? What a debut!

It is one of those books that you don't want to put down - that makes you want to stick with it rather than waste time going to bed or doing other chores.

It is a real page turner. There are mysteries inside mysteries, and that is not counting the enigmas, et cetera.

The story slips back and forth over 200 years or more. It does this smoothly and without a detectable jerk. The characters are realistic and well drawn. The mystery and its solution continue right up until the end. I had no idea of the final outcome until I got there.

It was supposed to be part of my holiday reading, but once I looked at it, I was hooked, and I finished it 3 weeks before the holiday began.

A fast-paced thriller like this, in such a beautiful setting, and with the costume drama built in, should be filmed or televised. I look forward to watching it.

Well done Steve.

Unusual! would be what comes to my mind after reading this first book in a series.
Although the beginning was a little slow, it really picked up... action came into play and Tayte our amateur detective started to show spunk and personality!
I enjoyed the book partly because I love historical novels; we go back and forth between contemporary and 18th century stories, although sometimes the style of writing seems a little outdated...
Good fun. I am very tempted to give Tayte another go and I will try number 2!

I enjoyed this book once I got into it. Better to read first few chapters in one go so as not to lose the storyline. Recommended for all those who like a "detective" story.

Just finished reading In the Blood by Steve Robinson. I found it quite an enjoyable, light-hearted read. My criticisms are that I had an unfortunate image of Jefferson Tayte as looking like Sergeant Bilko and the image became even worse when he was compared to Larry Hagman, both comical figures in my book, so hard to take seriously. That was also the problem with several situations in the book when Tayte should have been dead and buried many times, but the story had to continue of course. Also the way Tayte moved around the area was hardly credible, but if you like your crime light-hearted you got over that. I also found there was a lot of packaging in the book, descriptions of landscapes, rooms, inns, people, etc, which were nothing to do with the plot. Some of the people in the plot were also hard to place in whether they were in the skulduggery class or goodies. I feel I am being very critical but these were the things that irked me and I don't want to give the impression it was a load of rubbish, I quite enjoyed it. A commendable first book, wish I could do as well!

If you are interested in genealogy then this book is for you. It has all the elements to keep you reading. I do not want to spoil your enjoyment by telling you more about it. After reading this I went on to buy #2 and #3 in this series. All of them left me wanting more.

Steve Robinson's books "To the Grave" and "In the Blood" are wonderful reading. An avid reader of mystery novels, I am often disappointed by writers who go for the far too easy ending, or badly plotted rhythm. Robinson constructs his plot line around the development of his research. There is no real character development as he meets people, and he doesn't need to, as the people are there to give him information about the person being researched. The heart of the story is the story of the person he is researching, and it's totally fascinating!!!!!

Quite an entertaining book but some irritating things. One really silly thing that the author as UK based should not have done is screw up Heathrow logistics - the hero is due to land at 2230, and get a Paddington-Truro train at 2345, and despite the taxi driver telling him it will cost a lot less and be quicker does not go by Heathrow Express, Sorry - 75 minute to land, get out of Heathrow after collecting luggage and get to Paddington- oh yeh. If you land on time it will take you an hour to get out of Heathrow if you are lucky. Come on mate! I imagined an older Jonah Hill as the hero which gave me a more comedic feel than others may have. As so often, the hero of course does not tell the very honest police anything until he has to, when if he had done so earlier, lots of his problems would have been reduced - like getting a note pinned to his chest.

So not a great book, but for a freebie, perfectly OK - would I buy a follow up? Maybe -but not immediately. It would actually make a pretty good TV series.

I have just finished reading In the Blood. I enjoyed it immensely, and I find Jefferson Tayte a very refreshing mystery novel character. As an English teacher from France, I definitely believe that Mr Robinson's work should be translated into other languages for non-English-speaking people to enjoy the adventures of Jefferson Tayte. My two favourite pastimes at this time of my life are genealogical research and reading, especially historical fiction and mystery thrillers, so I was delighted to discover a novel that combines all of these passions between its covers!

Yes, it did stand up to my expectations: the historical fiction part of the story is fascinating, and the present-day mystery is very skilfully woven, with moments of true suspense. All that, plus beautiful descriptions of the Cornish coastal scenery would surely make a wonderful film!

My mother has already read the first three novels in this Genealogical Crime Mystery series and loved them. I shall definitely buy her the fourth one so I can borrow it when I've finished the other two. "In the Blood" is apparently Steve Robinson's first novel, so I am very grateful to the person who made him redundant, making him turn towards a full time writing career!
