Présentation de l'éditeur

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Jesse’s life takes a sharp turn when Athena and Thor, her beloved canines, drag up a severed hand and deposit it on her mother’s front porch. With their help, the Greene County Sheriff’s department shifts into high gear and conducts a thorough search of the surrounding woods. Their grisly discovery—the frozen, battered body of Mary Keen—prompts an intense man hunt for the killer. There’s only one problem: evidence leads the police right back to where they started. The dead woman was wearing Jesse’s watch! Battling freezing temperatures and the beginning of a full-blown mountain blizzard, Jesse and Billy Blackhawk, P.I., set out to prove her innocence and find the real killer. Investigating the death of Mary Keen leads to a trail of greed and police corruption—with extreme consequences. An incendiary situation gets even hotter when Jesse has no choice but to kill…or be killed. All is not what it appears to be when she stares into the face of a killer and the heart of true evil. She must confront her worst nightmare—a psychopath from her past who has enlisted the help of an unlikely accomplice. When the killer’s search for revenge finally ends, bullets fly, and Jesse realizes that her nightmare is not over.

Excerpt from book: After Billy left, I threw a couple of logs on the fire, switched on the television to keep the dogs company, and then headed to the bathroom for a well-deserved soak. I grabbed a couple of candles off the dresser and was ready to relax. I’d just about dozed off in a sea of warm bubbles when Athena came up to me and barked. “What?” I snapped to attention. “What is it, girl?”
She yelped and pranced around in circles, her nose high in the air. Suddenly she stopped, twisted her head to one side, and then jumped on the tub with her front paws. She was silent until I went to pat her head. A chilling howl came out of her mouth that could have awakened the dead. I knew she was trying to tell me something. “Back up and give me a minute,” I said to her as I reached for the towel on the toilet seat. I jumped out of the tub, dried off quickly and wrapped the towel around me. Athena turned and ran. By the time I reached the living room my heart was racing. My hair was wet and the water dripped down my back. I stood frozen in shock, staring at what she was trying to show me. A picture of a skull and crossbones flashed on the computer screen. At the bottom, a message appeared: STAY OUT OF MY BUSINESS OR DIE!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Pretty good read...... 16 août 2012

I will start off saying that I would have given this book a 3-1/2 if I could have. It isn't a 4 but it wasn't a 3 either. This is a series and the first one I have read (I understand that this is the second in the series). I am not sure if I would consider this a mystery or a romance book? Perhaps when I read the others I can make up my mind better. I will say if you don't like romance in your mysteries I would advise you to skip this series.

This book was pretty enjoyable BUT I did not enjoy some of the repetition of the dialogue (particularly the love she felt for one of the characters - it was stated why way too many times). Jesse & her sister both fell in love with someone over the matter of HOURS - not very realistic. I don't want to give anything away since this is a series so you will have to read it to see what I am talking about. I am not too crazy about romance mixed in my mysteries so perhaps this bothered me more than it would bother others. Although I still felt that the repetition made me feel like I wasn't smart enough to remember something.

There were also a few other things that happened that I would consider dumb. Why would Jesse go out by herself when they all know she & Billy are targets? It just seemed too far fetched. The fact that no one even seemed concerned that she was going out by herself seemed unrealistic. You will find out the others when you read the book. I don't want to give too much away.

Overall, I will definitely read book 1 & book 3 (not sure if there are more at this point). They are fairly likeable characters (I really like strong smart female characters & I would not classify Jesse as either - I am not saying she is dumb but she doesn't really seem like a grownup - perhaps this is why she chose her husband as she did - father figure?) & the mystery was pretty good although I wish they had covered more of it at the end. Once things went down it went pretty fast and it felt rushed.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good story - but really needed editing 9 janvier 2013

I liked this book - I really did. I intend to read more of this series - including the first book as I try to read series in order if possible. The 3 stars rating relates solely to the fact that the book was appallingly edited - if edited at all?! There weren't many typos ('viscous' instead of 'vicious' stood out - I'd like to see a viscous dog actually) but there was major repetition - especially in the voicing of feelings, doubts, internal questions etc. This 'padding' became quite irritating - but fortunately the story was sufficiently interesting to keep me reading right to the end. I have nothing against the exposition of feelings or thoughts - and they are often an essential part of any work of fiction....but there's a limit. Having only read one book I cannot comment on the entire series - though I suspect that book one may well bring more of the same - perhaps it improves as the series progresses. However, if not, and if there is any intention to reissue/republish, I would suggest a good tight editing job needs to be conducted.
Apart from the technical deficiencies, I enjoyed the mystery, I liked the characters (apart from Cole who was a bit of a pain) - and I'll be interested to see what the other books in the series will bring.

I loved Book 1 in this series, What You See, so I decided to read Book 2. I am so glad! I love these characters and love the way the author weaves a well-told mystery with a dash of humor. I do like a little hint of humor with my mysteries and so far this series has been just right. Since I have a dog that I take for long walks in the woods nearly every day, I could really sympathize with Jesse, and how she must have felt when her dogs brought in a severed hand. Yikes! Highly entertaining. I can't wait to see what Jesse and Billy get into next.

I find it difficult to like the main character Jesse Watson. She strikes me as hot tempered, whiny, bitchy, self-absorbed. And really, pregnancy symptoms a day after having sex with her boss, who she got involved with even though she was supposedly in love with someone else?

This reads almost (almost) like a bad Nancy Drew novel.

This the second book in the series and I gave it a try thinking that it would have to be better than the first. Boy, was I mistaken. The heroine, Jesse Watson, has the intelligence of an average 10-year-old and the libido of an alley-cat. She is so unbelievable that you almost want the killer (there is one in each book) to shoot her.

I hope this book was published by a vanity press, because I would very disappointed if a real publishing company printing it. While the plots were somewhat interesting, they would make a much better short story or novella. The author needs to throw out her cliché textbook and encyclopedia of useless adjectives/adverbs. Every event, especially when the family gets together, to way too wordy and therefore, extremely unnatural.

Jesse keeps referring to past psychological counseling. I would like to recommend that she start seeing her doctor again.
