Présentation de l'éditeur

What does a conductor actually "do"? How much effect does he or she have? Can the orchestra manage without one? Why don't the players look at the conductor more? Is it necessary for the conductor to play every instrument? What about interpretation? What happens at rehearsals? Why do some conductors "thrash around" more than others? Who's the boss in a concerto: the soloist or the conductor? These are some of the questions that receive lively and informative answers in this book by renowned conductor Christopher Seaman. Composed of short articles on individual topics, it is accessible and easy to consult. Each article begins with an anecdote or saying and ends with quotations from musicians, often expressing opposing views. There are many books on the art of conducting, but none like this. Music lovers wondering what the figure on the podium actually does, and aspiring conductors eager to learn more about the art and craft of leading an orchestra, will all treasure this wise yet humorous book. Christopher Seaman has been successful at both ends of the baton. After four years as principal timpanist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, he was appointed principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and has enjoyed a busy international conducting career for over forty years. He is now Conductor Laureate for Life of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, New York, and he continues to bring great music and wise words to audiences, students, and readers around the world.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Clear Humorous Intelligent Interesting for the Layman also 23 juillet 2013
Par Shalom Freedman - Publié sur Amazon.com
As a frequent attender of classical music concerts I always have tons of questions about what is going on which I do not know how to answer. I have tried by reading various books including one by one of the twentieth century's greatest conductors. I was not helped in understanding very much. In contrast , this book is a clearly intelligently and humorously written guide to the world of conducting, and with it the world of classical Music. There is technical detail I could not understand which will enrich the reading of true professionals. But on the whole the book will be understandable to amateur listeners like myself.
Each chapter opens with an anecdote and closes with varying opinions from musicians on the subject in question. The chapters are relatively brief but as I have said clearly written. The book opens with a description of the qualities and forms of learning which help make good conductors. It goes on to cover a very broad spectrum of subjects related to conducting.

Written in an entertaining manner, each of the 40+ chapters beginning with an anecdote and ending with quotations from other musicians. In between, Seaman's own words. Fun for a practicing conductor to read, but perhaps even better for non-conductors wondering about the profession.

Funny, witty and charming, just like Chris Seaman himself. Loved it! Conductors are a huge subject, and who better to comment than one of their own.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book, even for non-musicians 9 janvier 2014

When we attended concerts of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Maestro Seaman's home in recent years, we always made it a point to go to his pre-concert chats because they were so informative, charming, and witty. His book reflects that same personality. If you ever wanted to know what a conductor actually does both on and off stage, this book will reveal all. I'm not a musician, don't read music, and so the occasional musical references as reflected in excerpts of scores were lost on me, but nevertheless I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves classical music. Extremely entertaining and informative read.

He relates to everyone from musicians to staff to long time patrons, casual concert goers to company presidents. He brings his wit, wisdom and decades of musical experiences into this book. Each chapter is a few pages long, sharing real information and fun anecdotes about all aspects of what a conductor does on stage.
