Présentation de l'éditeur

A brand new edition featuring illuminating text written by expert, local writers alongside over 250 inspiring full-colour photographs that will bring Canada's people, places and astonishing diversity to life, at the turn of a page. A brand new 'Best of' feature highlights the top attractions not to be missed, such as a visit to Quebec City and the infamous Niagara Falls, a spectacular sighting of the Aurora Borealis and not forgetting an unforgettable glimpse of some resident polar bears. This section also features the editor's choice of exclusive and unique recommendations, including the best beaches, museums and winter sport destinations. An in-depth 'Places' section comprises sixteen chapters covering the entire country, from the icy 'wasteland' of the Northwest Territories to the coastal resorts of Nova Scotia. All the principal sites along the way are conveniently cross-referenced by number to accompanying full-colour maps, to enable instant orientation and easy navigation at a glance. The information on each area is also accompanied by restaurant listings, including contact details and an indication of price range and local specialities. You will also find a fascinating history chapter, tracing key events from the arrival of the Inuit peoples, the rise and fall of New France and the arrival of the British, to Confederation Canada and Postwar Prosperity. Intriguing features explore Canada's people, art, food and drink, natural world and much more, to give you deeper understanding of the country's unique culture. A comprehensive 'Travel Tips' section provides essential practical information, covering transport, accommodation for all budgets, shopping, nightlife, sports, activities for children, money, health, language and much more, along with useful contact telephone numbers to help you book activities in advance. The unique combination of insightful exploration alongside practical advice means that this guide truly is a pleasure to read before, during and after your visit.

This book is just what I was looking for in finding information about Canada 19 février 2014

I like Insight Guides books anyway, and this book is no exception. It has a good explanation of Canadian history; has good pictures of the countryside and towns; and is very informative on tourist sites.

The subject it covers is just too big for one book. I think a set of three books would be good. East, West and center. No-one can cover the whole country in one trip. The pictures were good, the places interesting, but I think the subject would be more suited to a searchable DVD.

Politically correct guide to Canada 2 mars 2010

I buy the Insight Guides for armchair traveling, but they are becoming unreadable. This 7th edition (2007) of the Canada guide is a good case in point. The introductory sections are loaded with all the contempt and buzzwords and gratuitous insults that one could wish for in references to the Evil White Conquerors, even into the 21st century. These background essays read like freshman college assignments that parrot the cliches of the students' '60s radical teachers. My few glances through the rest of the book show the same treatment ("was built on land stolen from the Indians"; "jealousy of white merchants ... effectively barred the immigration of Asians to Canada until the 1960s"). Maps and pictures are nice, as always, but I've bought my last one of these. Maybe the Insight/Discovery people can be persuaded to simply include a booklet containing generic anti-imperialist/racist screeds with each volume and leave the propaganda out of the books themselves.
