Compact, with useful info - but not formatted very well 9 mai 2011

I read through this in preparation for my upcoming trip to Helsinki. One good thing about this guide is that it's fairly small, so it won't take up much room in my carry-on bag. More good things are that it has some good practical information about Helsinki and Finland in the back, and there are some nice photos.

Otherwise, the style of the guide is really not to my liking. The maps are far too small, and many of the important sights to see are stuck in the crack of the binding (bad design). Also, I don't like that the book mostly features structured "walks" around the city (i.e. "start at the train station and go left, then turn right and the building you see is the blah blah, and then turn left and go to the blah blah). I guess that's fine if you are the type to actually follow these types of "walks" to the letter -- but I'm not. I would much prefer to have a guide book that is divided out by "areas" of a city, or even just quadrants -- then I want to know what there is to see in each of these areas, and I will determine how I'm going to get there and in what order I'm going to see the sights myself. With the format of this book, it's really hard to quickly understand A) what the sights are, and B) where they are. I even had to really try to figure out where the walks too place in the city (i.e., I had to look very closely to find out that the walk was southeast of the city centre). Also, there is really only one map in the front -- and it would be nice to have enlarged sub-sets of that map in each individual "walk" section, so you can see a bigger and clearer map with the sights that section is referring to.

In my opinion, this guide book falls very short of the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides, which I have found to be superior to all other guides. I was actually looking for a DK Eyewitness Top Ten guide for Helsinki, but one doesn't exist, so I settled for this one.

To be fair -- there is some good information in this book which I hope will be helpful to me. I just wish it was in a format that would make it easier to find when I need it.
