Présentation de l'éditeur

Featuring the first three books in this classic crime series starring Inspector Morse: Last Bus to Woodstock, Last Seen Wearing and The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn.

Last Bus to Woodstock:

The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man – facing charges of wilful murder, sexual assault and rape. But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key . . .

Last Seen Wearing:

Morse was beset by a nagging feeling. Most of his fanciful notions about the Taylor girl had evaporated and he had begun to suspect that further investigation into Valerie’s disappearance would involve little more than sober and tedious routine . . . The statements before Inspector Morse appeared to confirm the bald, simple truth. After leaving home to return to school, teenager Valerie Taylor had completely vanished, and the trail had gone cold. Until two years, three months and two days after Valerie’s disappearance, somebody decides to supply some surprising new evidence for the case . . .

The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn.

Morse had never ceased to wonder why, with the staggering advances in medical science, all pronouncements concerning times of death seemed so disconcertingly vague. The newly appointed member of the Oxford Examinations Syndicate was deaf, provincial and gifted. Now he is dead . . . And his murder, in his north Oxford home, proves to be the start of a formidably labyrinthine case for Chief Inspector Morse, as he tries to track down the killer through the insular and bitchy world of the Oxford Colleges . . .

It is always difficult, I find, to assess a book , having first seen the TV series. Just as it is hard to assess the TV after having read the book. However I would say that I enjoyed very much the beginning of Morse books. Very god plots written in a high quality language.

I began watching the Inspector Morse series on PBS just a few months ago but found the main character immediately compelling I watched a couple of episodes of Endeavour, also on PBS, just to flesh out the character a bit. What interested me more than the crime, the suspects, the twists and turns of the plot was rather the complexity of the Inspector himself. Here was a thoughtful man, contemplating the meaning of life - and of his life - as he sat in the car with Lewis or turned on his favorite music at home or downed another pint in the pub or soaked in the strains of a great oratorio in the setting of a church.
So when I discovered Colin Dexter's original books on Kindle, I dove right in. Yes, there are differences between the book inspector and the TV inspector, but that Character with a Capital C rings true in both. Dexter can give us more insights, help us to understand how Morse got to be the way he is, and take his time to develop both Morse and Lewis.
What I find most charming about Dexter's writing is the attention to detail: a sentence or two interjected into a scene that serves to comment on everything that is happening without appearing to be didactic. A TV camera might be able to duplicate this effect, but it may be too subtle to pick up. This gentle nod to what's going on about the action is graceful and surprising.
Because I have been watching the PBS series, I am able to put voices to the main characters as I read along. And the quirky British jargon - all those strange words - are easily defined by the dictionary on my Kindle. I'm learning a foreign language!
I have not been a fan of mystery writers; indeed, Dexter is my first major mystery writer. I couldn't have picked a better introduction to the genre.

Inspector Morse, as written by Colin Dexter, is far from your normal "gum shoe". He listens to opera, was a student at Oxford, and relies on his critical mind to catch his criminals. Beyond that, Dexter writes beautifully. His command of the language is a pleasure to read. I enthusiastically recommend these novels to anyone who wants to experience a detective novel that is written like, well, a novel of literature.

...ITV did Colin Dexter a HUGE favor when they edited Morse's tales for television. The tighter scriptwriting required for television production eliminated much of what I considered unnecessary in either the plot or Morse's character -- and they increased Lewis's importance, a valuable balance to Morse's eccentricity much missing in Dexter's original tales.

I have again discovered that reading a book and watching TV is a lot different. (Even if the station is PBS)
Morse in the books is not as agreeable as on TV. The plots are as complicated and the characters are
as diverse as I expected but I'm not as much enamored of Morse as I was.
