This is a great little book, filled with helpful insights and vignettes. I found myself quoting Dr. Wexler's book so often in treatment that I finally got smart and started making it required reading for all of my clients, both couples and individuals, for whom male depression is an issue.

Dr. Wexler's style was relaxed and easy to follow. I felt like I was having a conversation with him. The exercises and summaries were very helpful. Dr. Wexler gave practical advice that I plan to follow. Thank you!

I've always known that my husband's moods went in cycles. As a family joke (but not), my husband's waredrobe is covered with crabs & Grumpy dawarf. One day he'd be involved, happy, supportive, etc. and then all of a sudden he would blame me for everything, become short tempered, pick fights & fixate about things he really had no control over, etc. I would then get defensive, play into the whole thing, and within a month of the initial downward cycle I'd start emotionally preparing for a divorce. Once it got to that point, all of a sudden he would change back to the original guy. What a roller coaster! This book, finally puts a name to my husband's cycles. Examples given in the book, I swear, must have come from my house, the exact words my husband uses were written in this book, such as "I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist!". It also gave me a TON of tools to help me "see" the cycle and appropriate reactions to make the situation better instead of worse. Additioanlly, the author points out how diet & excersice can help as well as the more traditional meds & counciling. (I'm adding more fish to our diet as soon as I spot a downward cycle, even though I hate fish!)

I borrowed the book from the library, but I'm buying it so that it is ALWAYS available for reference!

Oh, I had the book next to our bed for 3 weeks and my husband never noticed what I was reading. When I got to the end I suggested he read it and as the book suggested, he doesn't feel like he needs to...however, that isn't stopping me from being "prepared"!

This book is well written and a quick read that is good for women who are concerned about the man in their life. It is also a good book for men to read to better understand the problems of depression in men. This seems to be a topic that has not gotten nearly as much attention as depression in women. With the popularity of the internet the problem of depression in men is beginning to get more attention and it is becoming easier to find information. As of now this is easily one of the top five books available for men with depression.
