Revue de presse

"The Israelis have always been paranoid about photographing their aircraft, so the selection [of photographs] in this A-4 volume is limited, but there are many color profiles. The A-4s saw lots of action in the nation's various wars and it is good to see all this information under one cover." -Air Classics

"This is one of the best-reading books I have found in a long time. It spans the combat history of one of the true workhorses of the Israeli Air Force... The photography is the primary best seller for this book. There are MANY unpublished and rare photos from the Israeli Archives and private collections. Even if you don't read the book at least look at the pictures, they are well worth it. AND of course there are the familiar Osprey Color Plates. These are outstanding, and provide the modeler with many detailed descriptions and variations to choose from." -Rick Bellanger, IPMS (January 2010)

"This book by Shlomo Aloni covers the initial search for a light attack aircraft, the use of the Skyhawk in the War of Attrition and then the Yom Kippur War. Then the ascendency of the A-4 as Israel's premier light attack craft and its inevitable reduction as other types take its place in front line units. All of this is superbly illustrated by photos of these planes in action and the usual excellent profile section that we have come to expect from Osprey." -Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness / (February 2010)

"This title is Aloni's fifth for Osprey and like the previous four, opens an important window into the IDF/IAF... A great book about our special aircraft." -Skyhawk Assocation (Spring 2010)

Présentation de l'éditeur

The light and agile A-4 Skyhawk was the first modern American jet to be offered to the Israeli Air Force, marking the point where the US took over from France as Israel’s chief military supplier. Deliveries began too late for the A-4 to fight in the Six-Day War, but it soon formed the backbone of the IAF’s ground-attack force. From 1969 to 1970 it flew endless sorties against Egyptian forces in the War of Attrition. Then, during the Yom Kippur War, five squadrons of A-4s saw combat and 50 planes were lost as they battled against the Arab armored onslaught. Using previously unpublished first-hand accounts and rare photography from the IAF archives and pilots’ private collections, Shlomo Aloni tells the definitive history of the IAF’s A-4 squadrons, including the story of Ezra “BABAN” Dotan who became an ace with an unique double-kill of MiG17s.

The Douglas A-4 was a mainstay of Israel's Air Force from its introduction in 1968 through the mid-2000s. The versatile and rugged 'Scooter' handled light attack duties and even found time to claim several MiG fighters. Noted aviation historian Shlomo Aloni chronicles the A-4's IDF/AF record in this 2009 Osprey release, #81 in their 'Combat Aircraft' series.

First off, after years of reading about "Iraeli Pilot X" and "Squadron Y," it's so refreshing to be given complete names of Israeli pilots and squadrons. As documented in Aloni's book, pilots such as Ezra Dotan, Assaf Ben-Nun, Giora Rom, Itzhak Golan and other members of Squadrons 109, 102, 115, 116, 110 and other units flew thousands of sorties during the 1967-70 War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, 1982 Lebanon War and other conflicts. The small but rugged A-4 proved its worth time and again, striking various targets, performing CAS, providing chaff support and so on.

Aloni's comprehensive narrative is nicely illustrated with color and b&w pix and six pages of color profiles by the always-excellent Jim Laurier. The dynamic cover artwork - of an A-4 splashing a Syrian AF MiG-17 - is courtesy of Gareth Hector; boy, that guy is good!

Whether your interest lies in the IDF/AF or the A-4 in general, ISRAELI A-4 SKYHAWK UNITS IN COMBAT should prove interesting. It's an informative, exciting and well-illustrated summary of the Skyhawk's combat record in the Middle East. Recommended.

Amajor user of this type of aircraft covers the deployment and the development of this fine aircraft employed by the israeli air force. Many mission and units are covered during the conflict in the middleeast. Though no longer employed as an attack aircraft its still an advance trainer for the IDF.

Another terrific addition to Osprey's Combat Units series! Shlomo Aloni has captured the IAF in all it's glory, just as he has with his previous Osprey books, Israeli Phantom Aces and Israeli Mirage III aces. The color profile artwork is as usual superb, and it's nice to finally see the actual Israeli pilot's names declassified instead of seeing them as 'Captain S' or 'Major D' as we've seen so often in publications from the 1980's or before.

Being a model aircraft builder, it was hard NOT to dig my Israeli A-4E off the shelf and begin work on it after reading this one! Keep up the great work Shlomo!
