Présentation de l'éditeur

Code name: Jet

Twenty-eight-year-old Jet was once the Mossad's most lethal operative before faking her own death and burying that identity forever.

But the past doesn't give up on its secrets easily.

When her new life on a tranquil island is shattered by a brutal attack, Jet must return to a clandestine existence of savagery and deception to save herself and those she loves. A gritty, unflinching roller-coaster of high-stakes twists and shocking turns, JET features a new breed of protagonist that breaks the mold.

Fans of Lisbeth Salander, SALT, and the Bourne trilogy will find themselves carried along at Lamborghini speed to a conclusion as jarring and surprising as the story's heroine is unconventional.

This is the first* novel in the JET series. The series is composed of the following books:

JET - Ops Files (prequel)
JET *
JET - Betrayal
JET - Vengeance
JET - Reckoning
JET - Legacy
JET - Justice
JET - Sanctuary

Q & A w/ Russell Blake

Q: How would you describe JET?

Russell: The elevator pitch? Kill Bill meets Bourne. The longer version would be that JET follows the saga of a young woman who thought she had left a brutal covert life behind her, but finds herself having to go back into that world when she is attacked by enemies from her past.

Q: How does JET differ from your other novels?

R: I've never written anything nearly as lightning-paced. It's completely and joyously over the top in the way a Bond film is. I wanted this to read like being in a Scarab, slamming through the waves at ninety miles per hour - a rush that just doesn't stop. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. But having said that, what's weird about JET is that even though it's brimming with action, crafting artful prose was a priority for me, and I think I struck a balance that's unusual and evocative. Whatever it is, it seems to work,

Q: JET's character is different than the other female protagonists you've written. What inspired her?

R: I got this idea when I was writing Silver Justice for a total kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, over the top female operative - sort of a female Jack Bauer crossed with James Bond, but way more deadly. From that idea came the seeds of an incredible story with more twists and surprises than I've ever tried for. But it also has a different sensibility. If there's such a thing as literary fiction action thrillers, I guess this might be it.

Q: Why the Mossad?

R: I wanted something that was exotic and had the reputation as highly effective, but wanted to avoid the usual CIA or KGB operative. And she's way too no-nonsense for MI6. That didn't leave a lot of choices. So the Mossad it was. I'd written an ex-Mossad operative once before in The Voynich Cypher & I think I sort of automatically leaned in that direction, and before I knew it the book was written.

Q: Your work has been described as cinematic. Why?

R: That's how I think. I see each episode or scene in my head, and then I write what I see. I try to provide enough depth so the reader is with me, but not so much that page flipping to get to the next good part is required. But I see each chapter as a scene - it's just how my brain works. I'm a creation of a modern world, raised on images and films, so I think that naturally affects my storytelling. Certainly the JET books are. Mission Impossible comes to mind.

Q: Will there be more JET?

R: Absolutely. The series is now up to eight novels, including the prequel to this one, JET - Ops Files, which lays out how it all began. How many more JET novels will there be? Hard to say. When I get tired of writing them I'll be sure to let everyone know...

Q: You mention Kill Bill and Bourne. How is JET similar?

R: I loved Tarantino's take because it was so completely overblown in every way. Deliberately so. I wanted JET to read like that film played, but with a story more like Bourne. The idea of a female operative grappling with her past just captivated my

I feel like I've found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with this author. Being a newbie to the Russell Blake world of writing, Jet was a tremendous way to start reading not only the beginning of what will be a Jet series but a beginning to reading his entire collection of books.

In Jet, Russell Blake doesn't ease you into the beginning with this book, he starts you off running and you don't stop until the end. I'm not an arms master - couldn't tell you the difference between a Saturday Night Special and a Glock but Russell Blake broke open a world where fire power, spy apparatus, and kill or be-killed moves are an every day occurrence, and delivered it in such a way that I was both fascinated and wide-eyed with the knowledge I gained. Don't forget to dust your passport off because the plot carries you from country to country. From Monaco to Punta Gorda, you get to see both picturesque waterfronts and the sights, sounds and smells of third world countries. Russell Blake plunks you right smack dab in the middle of it all.

Blake has made Jet a woman you don't want to mess around with but not to the point where other women would feel threatened by her. She has feelings and depth. This is a woman I would want on my side and her cell phone number to call if I ever needed some intimidation. As far as the plot, the twists are artfully conveyed where you don't know what to expect next. Want to take a quiet walk down the street? Rethink that when you hear the telltale whistle of bullets slicing through the air towards you.

Thankfully, at the end of Jet, Russell Blake has given a sneak-peek of Chapter One from what will be the second in this series. This author doesn't know how to let up on the action....and I'm so glad. Well done, Mr. Blake. It is my pleasure to highly recommend this book to lovers of all genres.

Jet is very, I mean VERY different from Mr. Blake's previous novels. I know I shouldn't be amazed by this, having read all his books and come to expect the unexpected with each new release. But here I am. Amazed. Again.

Jet is an edgy action thriller featuring a smoking hot leather-clad (see The Matrix-y cover art) badass female ex-assassin , with a dash of romance and a pinch of drama. Which isn't very far from his other novels. But this time, Mr. Blake's favorite conspiracy elements take a back seat, kinda lurking in the background, and more human elements ride the shotgun, with non-stop action, of course, in the driver seat. Mr. Blake dips more deeply into human emotions than usual, and strangely enough, he does it with over-the-top action thriller about a killing machine. And the thing is, it works. It works beautifully. I happened to find out Mr. Blake abhors romance novels, especially writing one. But if he ever writes one after an accidental boink over his cranium by a stray rock or something, I'm sure people will be all over it.

One thing remains constant with all his other novels - superb writing that lets me see, smell, hear, and feel the story, detailed descriptions of exotic places I've never been and will never see in all likelihood, and his prose that read more like literary fiction than an action thriller while packing a shitload of action at the same time. Well, that's more than one thing, but you get the point, yes?

With every new book, Russell Blake goes from strength to strength. In JET, he combines all the elements I love about his writing: twisted conspiracies, flawed characters who must improvise or die, and lightning paced action that keeps me turning the pages. This is the first Blake book I've read where the main character is a woman, and he did an excellent job of writing in her voice.

The story moves around to help the reader understand who Jet is and how she came to be hunted. Blake weaves seamlessly between the present and Jet's past so that by the end of the book, you understand why she left her former life, who is after her now and why, and how monstrous are the lies she's been told by the one person she trusted.

I ended up reading JET twice, simply because I enjoyed it so much and the characters stayed with me. If you hunger for smooth prose, a plot that never slows, and characters to love and hate, read JET. You'll be glad you did.

Highly recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Russell Blake shakes it up with JET 23 décembre 2012

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Russell Blake's novels. He has consistently delivered heart-pounding thrillers, set in exotic locations, each one embedded with a unique twist that has become his signature hallmark. I was skeptical when I first heard the premise for what I thought would be "yet another" super-agent female SALT character. JET shattered my skepticism within the first ten pages. We're introduced to Maya in a tropical paradise, where she has obviously adopted a less lethal, more relaxed lifestyle. Quite suddenly, her world is turned upside down by a savage attack, which she barely escapes. And this is what hooked me immediately. Maya (aka JET) didn't do backflips off walls or shoot her assailants through the eye at 100 yds with her pistol. She put all of her "rusty" skills to work in a desperate pitch to survive, and she just barely pulled it off. Russell Blake expertly merged realism with nail biting action, resisting the temptation to unleash JET too soon. However, as JET warms up, and regains her stride...there is no stopping this ex-Mossad agent. She kicks ass and buries her enemies on an epic scale across multiple continents, culminating in one of the best action sequences I've read in years. The final scene combined the Monte Carlo-esque opulence and glamour from James Bond's Casino Royale with the hard hitting "black ops" tradecraft of The Bourne Identity...all in one unforgettable ending.

And there is a twist. When I read Blake, I'm always looking for the twist. I didn't see this one coming at all. It changes everything for JET.

JET lays the foundation for an entertaining, thrill-a-minute, gritty Covert Ops series, staring the baddest female protagonist ever.

Russell Blake's "Jet" is the first novel in a fast paced trilogy that will have you on the edge of your seat. Jet is an ex-Mossad operative who faked her own death to get out of the business. She's made a new life for herself on the island of Trinidad. Suddenly her life is disrupted by an assassination attempt that could only have been planned by professionals.

Now Jet must figure out how she was betrayed and who wants her dead. Her search will take her across continents and unearth a plot of destruction and domination.

The character of Jet reminded me of an older Lizbeth Salander from "The Dragon Tattoo". Blake gives Jet more emotion and depth in this first book of the trilogy than Lisbeth had in "Dragon", in my opinion. The villains are deliciously evil.

The story is fast-paced and full of unexpected twists and turns. It's a great thrill ride that will leave you anticipating the rest of the trilogy.
