Excellent for learning chain attacks 13 septembre 2010
Par Josh - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
When this book arrived at my door and I began flipping through the pages, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of techniques demonstrated. There are literally hundreds of submissions, sweeps, passes, escapes, ect. . .all in awesome color photographs, and from multiple angles. However, I still wasn't sold. It is quite easy to fill up a large book with flashy moves that don't work in competition, so I began a detailed exam of what was being shown. . .To my surprise, there were only a handful of flashy techniques. I found a couple that I am pretty sure I could never pull off (partly because of the nature of the move, but partly due to my own limitations), but for the part, the bulk of the techniques appeared to be legitimate moves. I already knew a lot of the techniques, but I think there was just a couple of moves where I did things exactly as Jackson does. For the most part, each move had slight variations from the way I did the move--and with all honestly, I feel many of these slight variations would make me more competent with the move. Good news, right? As I read more, I discovered the real golden nugget in this book is not the moves themselves, but how Jackson chains the moves together with other moves. For example, if you fail at this one technique, it creates an opening to go for this next technique. If your opponent defends that technique, it creates an opening to employ option 3. Personally, this is exactly what I needed. All too often I got for a submission or sweep, my opponent shuts me down, and I go back to a neutral position. It never allows me to catch my opponent off guard--and this is a major theme Jackson tries to show in his text. . .I haven't purchased all the books on grappling on the market, so I can't do much of a comparison, but in my opinion this book is really, really good. It might take quite a long time to learn all the techniques in this book (I'm talking years), but having too much to work on is a good thing.

Encyclopedic resource for the MMA practitioner and fan! 10 septembre 2010
Par Kevin Quinley - Publié sur Amazon.com

"Let's Roll ...!"

It is by now axiomatic that most fights end up on the ground. This is likely true whether we or talking about a street fight or a top UFC bout. To the bookshelf of indispensable references regarding the grappling arts, we now have an instant classic in the newly released, "Jackson's MMA: The Ground Game."

Anyone familiar with MMA - mixed martial arts - is doubtlessly familiar with Greg Jackson. He is considered THE guru and "Yoda" of mixed martial arts. He has likely forgotten more about mixed martial arts then most people have ever learned. His Albuquerque New Mexico Submission Fighting camp features a veritable Who's Who of elite martial artists at the top of their respective games. Many accomplished fighters go "to the mountaintop" to learn from the person widely acclaimed as the best mixed martial arts trainer in the business.

Co-author Kelly Crigger is a top MMA writer. He is the author of the highly entertaining "Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of Mixed Martial Arts" and writes regularly (and adroitly) for FIGHT magazine. Together, these two experts have crafted an encyclopedic resource on combative sports on the ground.

This 300-page book is generously illustrated with multiple color pictures showing the progression of various ground game techniques, both offensive and defensive moves and a veritable buffet of submission techniques. The ground game is more than wrestling and more than jujitsu, but certainly incorporates techniques of both.

This useful, practical and hands-on book is organized into eight major sections:

* Sports Nutrition Guidelines
* The Full Guard
* Inside the Full Guard
* Guard Variations
* The Side Mount
* Head Control
* Rear Mount
* Full-Mount

Like its companion volume on the standup game, THE GROUND GAME is a useful if not absolutely essential resource for anyone engaged in grappling or mixed martial arts at any level. Even for those individuals not falling into either of the preceding categories, the book is also useful as a resource and reference for self defense techniques. In addition, for serious and hard-core fans of mixed martial arts - whether UFC, Strikeforce or other - this is also a useful reference that will familiarize one with various techniques and make the fan a more informed and appreciative viewer.

Unfortunately, in many MMA bouts, fans become impatient, get restless and start booing when the fight goes to the ground. Often, this is due to an ignorance of ground and submission techniques and the mistaken impression that "nothing is happening." Though that is sometimes the case, it often reflects ignorance of the subtleties of the ground game. Illuminating these fine points is a "mission accomplished" by Jackson and Crigger.

As is the case with any book, however, it is not realistic to expect that anyone will learn fluency and skill just from reading a book. To this extent, THE GROUND GAME by Jackson and Crigger is a superb reference text to augment - but not replace -- the need for skilled hands-on instruction from a knowledgeable instructor. If you're interested in grappling, mixed martial arts or self-defense, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of THE GROUND GAME!

The Ground Game

What a superb publication! This is easily my favorite ground-game book because, unlike a number of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu manuals, Greg Jackson's book doesn't just involve submission holds, but also covers every imaginable aspect of ground'n'pounding.

Submission holds - such as rear naked chokes, arm bars, and kimuras - work well, particularly in the earlier stages of a bout when competitors aren't as sweaty; however g'n'p is also a very effective means of submitting an opponent that is absent in BJJ. And because most street fights do go to the ground, I particularly like the street-applicable aspect of this book.

"Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts: The Ground Game" is the sequel to "Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts: The Stand Up Game", with these two books perfectly complementing one another. Again, Greg has teamed up with US Army Lieutenant Colonel and author of "Title Shot: Into the Shark Tank of Mixed Martial Arts", Kelly Crigger.

In The Stand Up Game, there is the bonus chapter: "Streetfighting, Multiple Opponents, and Weapons". In The Ground Game, the bonus section is "Sports Nutrition Guidelines", and includes: General Nutrition; Estimation of Calorie Needs; Nutrition Before, During , And After Workouts; and Top Ten Nutrition Tips To Improve Overall Health.

Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts: The Ground Game has really nailed it. If you're interested in having a complete ground game - inside or outside the cage - this 300-page manual is a must.

The book covers all facets of the ground game including:

Full Guard Submissions

I was quite surprised 27 juin 2011

At first I quite disappointed. I thought the explanations were very simplistic and most of moves are pretty basic, unlike many Jiu-Jitsu books. But I tried some the moves in class. Surprisingly I had a lot of successes. Positions like half-guard and butterfly became much easier. Suddenly I was submitting guys and escaping from guys who used pin me down or just sweep me. That's why simple is good. It makes it easier to memorize a few moves before class and then try them out. Also by keeping it simple it make it easier to understand the idea behind method which what I really need in real sparring situation instead of thousand details.

If you do MMA or BJJ and want to improve your ground game this book is value for your money. You should get it.

A worthy companion to Jackson & Crigger's The Stand Up Game 3 octobre 2010
Par Nathan L. Wilcox - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts: The Ground Game by Greg Jackson with Kelly Crigger is a worthy companion to their earlier book The Stand Up Game.

The first book gave me a great deal of insight into the devious and crafty mind of superstar MMA coach Greg Jackson who has risen to fame based on the success of his fighters Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, Jon Jones, Nate Marquardt, Diego Sanchez, Keith Jardine et al.

The Ground Game provides a great deal of insight into the type of teaching that Jackson provides to his fighters. Throughout the book he emphasizes principles like seizing and maintaining the offensive initiative, using deception whenever possible, capitalizing on your opponent's mistakes, every move should have a back up plan, and think more than one move ahead.

The book is your usual lavishly illustrated Victory Belt production with tons of clear full-color photographs to explain every move -- most moves are captured from multiple angles. The sections are color coded for easy reference and well organized.

There are sections on The Full Guard, Inside the Full Guard, Guard Variations (Butterfly, Spider, Sit-Up, Downed, Half and Inside Half Guard), Side Mount, Head Control, Rear Mount, and Full Mount. Each chapter includes sub-sections on strikes, submissions, sweeps, escapes, passes and transitions. There is also an introductory chapter on nutrition for training by P.R. Cole, MS and RD Candidate at Columbia University.

While it was a very enjoyable read for me as a student of the game, The Ground Game is the kind of information-dense treasury that would most profitably be used by someone in training who could take a day or two to study each move described. In conjunction with The Stand Up Game it's a complete system for MMA fighting.

There's nothing particularly avant-garde in Jackson's books, instead it's a near perfect encapsulation of the current state of the art in MMA. There are a few fairly novel submissions described like the calf crusher, the brabo choke, the octopus foot lock, and the double-knit choke, but for the most part, Jackson sticks to the high percentage move we see successfully pulled off by his students at nearly every UFC.
